Why it is better that most B School Ranking
1) There is no I I P M .....................finally ......................not even in the last position
2) Colleges like Symbiosis and ICFAI Hyd are rightly placed..............not like other b school magazine which place them in top 10 .......in no ways I am saying they are bad college ................a symbi or a ICFAI hyderabad are on given day better than most b school but they certainly are not the top 10 material
3) yes some one may say that X college shuld have been in Y position and Y college shuld have been in X position ........but atleast this ranking gives a clear picture ........of the top 40 -45 colleges .......there can be 2 position +/- but atleast u cant say any 50 + college to be in top 20 or a top twenty college after 50th position
4) For a guy who has less idea abt mba colleges ......this is a perfect example of where each college stand ,,,,,the other ranking wil take the guy for a ride
MY two cent for 2009 ranking
1) Start it a little earlier
2) Add some more colleges and subtract some of the existing colleges. I mean colleges like Praxis which has a collaboration with XLRI (and excellent faculty) surely shuld be there in next year ranking ......
Where i had a little problem seeing the ranking
1) IIFT above IIM I
2) IPMG in 72 position .......I gs there placement has not started ...once it starts I am sure they will march forward in next year ranking
3) IIM Shillong shuld not have been there
4) MICA is better than what it has
5) Fore is better than what it has
6) Same is the case with Sydneham and a few IITs
But over all excellent stuff .........PG rocks | | | | | The Following 3 Users Say Thank You to sonuisgreat For This Useful Post:

Awesome work PG ...
Good show with the rankings ....
Here is some analysis of the rankings and the methodology and Maybe the reason why each college is ranked where it is .... Disclaimer: This analysis is not the perfect one nor it claims to be one ( just like the PG rankings ) .. IIM Ahmedabad – The undisputed number one across the country, shows the brand value and reputation that IIM A carries not only in this country but across the world ….
The only region that did not vote for IIM A as numero uno was the southern region, where IIM B and ISB ruled the roost. This could be attributed to the fact that regional dailies are read in most of the southern part of India. IIM Bangalore – Ranked number 2 in the national rankings, IIM B could be pleasantly surprised that it has displaced IIM C as the 2nd most sought after B School in India. Started in 1973, 12 years after IIM A and IIM C were setup, IIM B has shot up to fame in the last decade. What makes IIM B the number 2 B-school in this country? A look at the regional setup shows that South India makes up a very large share of the IIM B vote. Being the undisputed number one in South India gives it the maximum number of positives according to the “Survey Methodology” as there is +1 point for every comparison you win in a survey. Ranking ISB at number two (comparing a 1 year course with a two year course) shows the regional bias that IIM B enjoys. Getting the North Indian votes ahead of IIM C,shows that IIM B as a brand has now arrived and looks to challenge IIM A for the number one spot. One major factor that could have worked for IIM B is the fact that, it gives out calls on a very different criteria (as seen by the huge number of lone IIMB calls), may make it look “elitist”.
IIM Calcutta – The number of respondents in the east, being about one-third of each the rest of the regions did not do any favors for IIM Calcutta. If, the number would have matched the South Zone, we could have had IIM C as the number 2 Brand in this country. It would be heartening for IIM C though to look up to West India for support in the coming years, while targeting Northern India for further public relations.
IIM Lucknow – Ranked at number 7, IIM L doesn’t enjoy any favors of being an “IIM”. National rankings suggest, aspirants, alumni, and current b school students still think about placements as the number one criteria for selection of b schools. Setup in 1984, 24 years has still not been enough for IIM L to surpass FMS and XLRI in terms of brand value. Or has it? The survey doesn’t claim to be the number one nor are the creators positioning it as the ultimate rankings of India’s best b-schools, because it is not that. It is the ranking of India’s most preferred / desired b-schools, basically a brand survey among aspirants, students and alumni.
The methodology of the rankings, take into account one important factor, the Alumni of an institute. Institutes like XLRI and FMS which were setup in 1949 and 1954 respectively do have alumni which roll into almost 10,000 and will always support their alma mater. The relative ranking of both these institutes does not go down drastically in any region, supporting the hypothesis that size does matter. Also in support is the fact that most alumni from IIM A, IIM B, IIM C work with alumni of these two institutes.
IIM Kozhikode – IIM K after being setup in 1996, is about to welcome its 12th batch of PGP students this June. A ranking of number 8 in this country speaks volumes about the growth that IIM K has achieved in such a short time. Having an alumni base of hardly 1000 and a batch of 180 doesn’t help IIM K score a lot of points in the survey, but the brand perception among aspirants sees it figure among the top 8 b schools in India.
Unfortunately like IIM Lucknow, IIM K still needs to showcase a lot more in its placements (the number one parameter for b school aspirants) so as to place a batch of 180 students better than a much smaller batches at some other institutes. One major factor against IIM K is that its brand perception in Northern India is not up to the mark, which constituting for 33 % of the survey takers has ranked IIM K at number 11 after IIFT(Delhi), MDI(Gurgaon) and IIM Indore (The only region where IIM K is ranked behind IIM I, IIFT and MDI). Aspirants in the north need to know about IIM Kozhikode and its positives, which will automatically project IIM K higher up in the rankings.
IIM Indore – The youngest of the IIMs till 6 months ago (before IIM Shillong was on the cards), IIM Indore too has achieved great exposure and growth in the past 10 years. Being ranked after MDI and IIFT Delhi can be attributed majorly due to the North Indian votes which have the highest %age share among all the regions (33 %). Being ranked at 11 after MDI and SP Jain in the West (where IIM I should have been ranked in the top 10) has caused a lot of damage in the rankings as the western region carries the 2nd highest vote bank for the rankings. Getting ranked after IIFT Delhi in South India (Joint 2nd largest share in the Survey at 29 % of the votes) is really an indicator of the lack of awareness about IIM Indore all across the country. IIM Indore has to work on its perception and image amongst all aspirants as the placement figures and growth like IIM K has been quite good.
ISB, Hyderabad – Ranked at number 4 overall, and in the top 4 across all regions, ISB as a brand has arrived in India. The only reason it stays at number is the fact that IIM A, IIM B, IIM C also get the 1 crore salary figures in the papers. This can also be attributed to the fact that the top 3 IIM’s get the same Investment Banks and consults as ISB, or should I say vice versa. In just 6 short years, ISB has claimed the 4th spot for its own in the Indian B School scenario. It wouldn’t be prudent to compare a two year and a one year course, but it will not take long for ISB to plant itself at the top spot, with the kind of talent India has, and the limited supply that the IIM’s can provide.
XLRI – The surprise thrown up in the rankings is XLRI at number 5 amongst all b schools in India and number 4 if you consider only two years courses. Surprise in what sense? All pundits in this country would tell you that XLRI-PMIR (the HR course is the best in India or possibly the best in Asia). Even IIM A the number one ranked b school in this country would tell you the same. Is the XLRI-BM (Business Management) the best or on par with the PMIR program? What have the survey takers voted for? Is it the BM program or the PMIR program?
If we take a look at the regional data, it is ranked ahead of even IIM Bangalore in the East, though only 9 % of the votes were from the Eastern Region of India. Looking at regional data is of little use as the maximum takers of the survey could well turn out to be XLRI Alumni who will be spread not all over India, but all over the world. This or the fact that aspirants are voting for the PMIR program could very well be the fact why XLRI has never been ranked below No. 5 in any region. Irrespective of the reasons, XLRI has and will in the future build a very strong brand perception among all MBA aspirants. The increasing number of XAT takers, number of colleges taking the XAT score, and the number of institutes under the Xavier’s Umbrella shows the kind of growth, that will one day rival the IIM’s for the biggest MBA brand in India.
FMS – Faculty of Management Studies, Delhi continuous the trend of non IIMs in the top 6 with a rank of number 6 in the national rankings. With a lowest rank of number 7 across all regions, FMS has a strong brand perception among students, alumni and aspirants. Though the Alumni factor could be a reason again, good placements year after year has helped FMS in a big way in building great awareness among all aspirants.
MDI – Ranked at number 9 in the national rankings, MDI as a brand is well poised to remain in the top 10 b schools in India for a while to come. Majorly gaining from the 33 % North India vote where it was rated above IIM I and IIM K thereby giving it much more positive points in the overall picture. The Western Part of India too (29% of the vote), has voted positively for MDI ahead of IIM I, thus affecting its overall ranking. Good growth over the last decade in placements, number of foreign exchange students, the non-IIM institute having the highest overall CAT percentile cutoff, helps MDI position itself as a top 10 b school in this country.
IIFT, Delhi – Ranked at number 10, IIFT Delhi is amongst those institutes which gains a lot by the high ranking ( ahead of IIM I and IIM K ) in North India which constituted 33 % of the votes. It’s surprising to see a ranking of 8 for IIFT, Delhi in the Eastern Region. Maybe opening up a center in Calcutta, has its own pros for the entire IIFT Brand. But again IIFT Kolkata, is ranked 21st in the eastern region, not far ahead of its overall Rank of 22. Again the lack of respondents from the eastern region (9%) wasn’t sufficient to cover up the loss in the other regions.
SJMSOM, IIT Mumbai – Surprisingly, an institute like SJMSOM, been ranked at the 20th position nationwide. This can be attributed to the small batch size, lesser number of alumni but most importantly, the fact that only Engineers can apply and get admission into the IIT’s School of Management. Thus VGSOM, IIT Kharaghpur and DoMs IIT Delhi too find themselves at 24 and 25 respectively. There is a very wide population of non engineers among MBA Aspirants who would rate other institutes which they would be able to join higher than the IIT’s.
Overall the rankings provide a decent look into how the average Indian person looks up to Indian B Schools, but it would have been better if we would have had more respondents in the eastern region (464 out of a total of 5410 is a really small number). The sample size of 464 could also have been biased as all respondents could have been B Schooler’s (IIMC has 600 students, XLRI 360 with some more in XIM B). The heavy weight age given to the people of the north could have been negated by equal number of respondents from each region.
Criticisms apart, it is a good start to the entire trend of perception based rankings, and hopefully the methodology will improve over time with the information flow to all those who take this survey to get more accurate results.
Again, as said before, I am not a pundit, and my analysis may be baised. Just thought, like nitin, more from IIM I, SjMSOM, et all might find the rankings unfavorable to their cause. This analysis is just to check if we can find the reasons as to why, each college is ranked where it is.
Request people not to take this "dil pe" ... and quote my post and tear it apart ..
A simple groan would do ......

This is amazing stuff!
PG HQ, hats off to you guys!
( and to the summer students, gronds, nikhil, ali, etc etc etc )
I implore all puys to spread the PG rankings to one and all. Finally a ranking that is voted by the vast majority, and considering the cream of the mba aspirants come to PagalGuy, the voters actually are the people who really matter.
I hope we get to see some full-time marketing of this ranking, it needs to go to the general public. Edit:
Saw Grond's query a few pages back. On similar lines, can we have a snapshot of the ranking with/without the methodology used (plus the additional details and proper links to the website) sent to all users ( maybe as part of the newsletter) or atleast to those who are interested? This needs to be published and spread to the mass, and what better means than by word-of-mouth?

Hi all,
Great job by the puys...
Spotted one discrepancy. Under best colleges accepting XAT, Bharathidasan Institute of Management (BIM), Trichy is included. As far as i know. from 2008 this college accepts only CAT score.
Correct me if i am wrong...

<--------------------- ------------------> | Nice post mate,
Almost said all i wanted to say about the Rankings and more..
Esp the IIMC brand.. In spite of a measly 9% of the voters from the east, i am glad that my favorite IIM gave a good decent fight to A and B..
I am sure that the PG rankings will get more and more popular as time passes..
Waise, one Question: Why are these rankings not visible at all from the front page??
I had my PG-credibility questioned when i didn't know about this for 12 hours..
But all in all, nicely done.. Much more realistic rankings than the ones in which one is challenged to think "beyond"!! are we allowed to vote now.....though i have voted i just thought if the voting option is made open now then these rankings might change and ideally they should be flexible as the perception keeps on changing........
How on the earth can someone rank IIMI so late in the picture....shocked to see the perception of IIMI...i had thought it wasnt this bad......... | | | | | Thread Tools | | | | Display Modes | Linear Mode |
