Re: CAT 2008 for Working Professionals - 23-04-2008, 05:59 PM

As my personal exp

newspaper's editorial: daily
divide the material dont just do quants or di.. mix the subjects
i used to do english daily for an hr or so and then either quant or di

my study hours were
3 hrs daily..n more in weekends

MOCK CATs ..enrolled to atleast and max two

till march-april finish the funda books and religiously do verabal..focus not only on jst RC but to ur lang.. and words..

its like this

by end of march-april: done with fundas
may-june- revise strengthen the weak areas not comf
july-start with mocks: analysis.. then identify ur weak area

u can change the time span according to need.. this is what i followed

how to analyse
well it is everything
what u need to analyze
1- where u went wrong
a) were u wrong due to lack of knowledge
b) were u wrong due to lack of time
c) were u wrong due to silly mistake
d) were u wrong due to wrong understanding of concept
e) were u wrong due to marking a fluke
2- where u were not able to attempt
a) was it lack of time
b) was it lack of knowledge
c) was it fear of more time utilzation
3- where u went right
a) u were confident
b) it was a fluke
c) it took more time than it should take
d) it was an intelligent guess with some conceptual backing
4- how much time allocation u gave to each section
a) were there ques which u can solve but was not able to reach that page
b) did u gave too much time to the section u r good/bad on

Now u have a good mix of what concepts u r lacking and once u have given few tests u can easily tell which topic u r good at and which u r not so good
so this will help u in question selection as well will give u direction for further preparation as well

follow this..after ever 5-6 mocks revisit them..n analyse..

15 days before CAT ..stop with mocks..no tests..just general reading and some problem solving...relax urself ...
D-dAY: jai mata di

p.s. there r few mistakes i did..like in the end i got too saturated ..so make sure u dont burn urself out..do relax in between...my perf in the end got affected coz of that

Re: CAT 2008 for Working Professionals - 24-04-2008, 03:06 PM

hmm... study schedule, resources...

my previous exp. of CAT tells me that one must do the following for each section:

QA : this section needs a fairly good amount of groundwork.. meaning u need to brush up a lot of concepts..

My suggestion : go for Quant material of TIME/ IMS...even second hand material will do... concepts don't change with time right ?... ( I would suggest TIME material for Quant since I have studied from there and have hugely benefitted from it...was able to score 95+ %ile in QA without much practice... just bcoz my concepts were clear)

I feel 2 months will be sufficient time for finishing the concepts..so if u start now... by june.. u ll be done with ur concepts...

after this ..... practice mock CATS... thts all is required in this section...

trust me... follow this and u ll easily get in 97+ %ile range.. (rest depends on how thorough u are... and ur practice..)

VA:
coming to VA... well in this... I would like to say that, get a habit of reading a lot... u hav to .. there's no escape...

My suggestion: Read newspaper daily.. u hav to do this step... and always keep a dictionary nearby... and look into it.. immediately when u dont know a word.. ( Use Advanced Learners Dictionary... it is better... I have oxford, it is good. )

Word list and books like "word power made easy" are good... but not as effective as the above mentioned way.I tried them.

Apart from this.. ur aim shld also be to know current affairs and world arnd u..

GD/PI bhi toh hai na bhai...dont thnk u can get thru tht easily after post CAT... remember in IIM GD/PIs, everybody is at least as good as u...

ok.. coming back to what I was saying....do start reading books and newspapers with a dictionary alongside...and make it a habit..( trst me it helps immensely.. )

then once u get easy with this habit .. best way to go about rest of the preparation is to practice mock CATs ... practice a lot...

DI:

Now this is a section which needs less learning but a lot more practice...

so suggestion for this would be...practice..practice and practice...

ya... and one more thing it helps if you know your multiplication tables well...till 20...squares till 25 ...cubes till 12...reciprocals till arnd...1/20 etc.

otherwise..general suggestion for this section is simply practice a lot....

***********************************************

Classes:

Coming to classes...it is not a neccessary thing but for first timers ...it helps a lot...
TIME and IMS are most popular ones...

so i would suggest first timers to join any one.. whichever is more popular in ur area...
***********************************************

Mock CATs/AIMCATs are the most essential part of ur CAT preparation...

so dont miss them.... and practice hard...

***********************************************

Last but not the least... BELIEVE IN YOURSELF.....U CAN DO IT... and U WILL...

dont compare urself with others....keep the confidence going... and by june next yr...u ll see IIM A waiting for you to join in and start their classes

BEST OF LUCK!!!!!!

cheers,
Shyam

The only thing i think, after giving cat 1 attempt..instead of making and asking others the strategy and stuff...focus on one thing that is study u know the stuff....go do it...and ssit in mocks, analyse them ....sit in CAT as we sit in any exam...if u have the confidence u surely will get that....Wo OSO ka dialogue tha na....agar kisi cheez ko .........
