I don't think it's the apt forum for you to ask this question..... I'll answer it anyway since I was an IT professional until I quit my job for CAT

Being an IT professional is indeed quite enriching in experience. As a matter of fact, being in the corporate world (be it IT or any other) is enriching in itself. Whole attitude and thought process changes. You start to look at the bigger picture.

Now coming solely to the IT companies. Starting off, you'll find quite a lot of things to learn and you'll find a significant change from your college level of thinking, style of programming, level of interaction etc. I was quite impressed when I noticed these changes in me. And then you start getting projects, where you learn even more, technically and otherwise, you start to feel important to the company. But after you've spent about a year or so and have met many people (peers and seniors), realization dawns that almost everyone is doing the similar job.....

Software development means basically googling, knowing where to copy paste and check the correctness of the code in the overall context of the project. If you know how to do it, you'll do quite well, irrespective of whether you know much or not. Picking up a new language becomes quite easy when you look at things this way. But unfortunately, this is not what we wished to do, right?? Atleast I wanted to do something which is quite meaningful and not like everyone's work. But you see anyone in the IT line (atleast majority of them) who are working at the entry level, at some stage they realize that things have started to become repititive, monotonous and although you can keep switching jobs, but more or less, you'll be doing the same stuff again and again, until you gain promotion to a managerial level.

Another concern in the IT companies is the emergence of "Technical Support". Many companies rely heavily on this as it drives the finances big time. If you have any idea about it, you would know that it's the least technically challenging but puts a high demand on the time front. This really drove me crazy because it's very little technical (which I was supposed to do) with very less control over the "project" (if you can call it) and just idling time away.

So although I was never on bench (this is another reason why people don't like IT, as they get bored of doing no work), I never really liked being on support and that drove me to quitting and eventually, more resolved towards CAT.... In the end, it turned out to be a blessing in disguise

Hi,
I gone throuh all ur links,n specially just read the earlier post..exactly the same lines which i recently gave to one of my managers..he was /is pretty coninced now..wat am i actually eying at now..As u said.."Bigger Picture",so here may be fully convinced that u doing great guns..in between i also wana say that dude..CAT/XAT and anyother is just a written exam..u need to see a "Bigger Picture"im sure watever u want to do u can do it from many other ways..now i say ,yes MBA is necesity n surely u gone do it..but its alwaz added to keep on adding workex and remain unstoppable..defiantly no IT work becaz u may not like to enhance ur IT skills but may be u can work upon soft-skills/managerial skills//social skills//just to kind of to undersatnd the "bigger picture"-----say like (P.E.S.T)-> Political.Economical.Social.Technical............. ...
u can alwaz get into sector u wana work..try to keep that workex going, and m sure at ur PEEK..u wuld be best to take up MBA..
i hope i just poked up wat u may have asked many times to urslef still making u feel the same.being tough is ok but being balanced is much better..:boat:..

Cheers abhi..

Re: CAT 2008 for Working Professionals - 20-04-2008, 01:53 PM

Hey jain.er,

You will find every job monotonous if you are with it for a long time. I am an IT professional and I really love the field. I have seen people entering the field at low levels yet making it to good levels soon.

Your observation of people not liking IT jobs is because more guys participate in the CAT race from IT than people from any other field. So it's natural you will find more grievieances towards IT in many forums of MBA. The number of people from IT in CAT is everincreasing because of the behemoth IT population and inorder to reach higher levels (faster )you need better qualifications to beat the crowd. Also engineers (read IT Engineers) have penchant towards Aptitude.

Yes, I concur the Development work has become synonymous to Googling but ask somebody who works Microsoft, Google or Adobe, the answer you will get might not be the same.

Any job will hapen to become stereotyped if you do not compliment it with good hobbies and interests. Do not misconcieve that you would be utterly satiated with post MBA jobs. They can be equally non-satisfactory if you do not indulge yourself in good hobbies and interests.

Hope it clarifies.

P.S - (A study suggests that most of the CEOs in India will resign if given an option. Does it mean CEO job is not good rather it reflects that when a job is done w/o complimenting it with interests and hobbies makes it tiresome.)
