Re: CAT 2008 for Working Professionals - 03-04-2008, 10:16 PM

Hi Working professionals,
I'm Chaitanya from Pune working in S/W company.

I want your opinion:
Guys I'm very poor at managing time.. :( though aspiring to be a Manager.
Last year I took CAT and scored horribly. So this year also I've planned to take CAT.

I want ask you folks that should I resign and devote complete time for study?
Because last year I couldn't study just because of tonnes of work..
And in office also my time is wasted too much in tea/lunch breaks....

And among my room-mates I'm the only CAT aspirant.. So I've NO study environment on my accomodation once I came from office. Everybody wants to watch TV, play games/ music on their machines...
That's why I was thinking to resign and study in Day time when nobody would on my flat.

But one of my friends told me that resigning would affect in my GD-PIs. He told me that some faculty from TIME told him that "Resigning just to take CAT" is not valid reason.

Please guide me on this front.. What should I do?

Boss resigning is not a solution. I mean several IIM forms have a question asking you to specify the reason for the breaks and mentioning this is a lame excuse.

I would suggest that you continue with your job but take a test series and be 100 percent sincere when giving these tests. Also do the the post test analysis rigorously and devote as much time as you can.

If you still feel the heat of the test getting over you then take a leave from the lob for the last 2 months before the test and prepare your best.

Hope the post is of some help.

I agree with this opinion as well..... Resigning should be considered only in the last couple of months.... if at all necessary. For the time being, join a weekend batch of some coaching institute(if u feel you need it) and you'll get their test series as well. Practicing and analyzing in the test series will give you a lot of experience on ways to manage time

Boss.. i am as dormant on this thread as anyone can be.. reason being, I joined the thread thinking abt cat08 when IIMs ditched me.. anyway, now i have IMT Fin.Convert and am waiting for MDI result.. so may not be around for long out here.. cuz this thread belongs to truely the aspirants..
Anyway, coming to ur point, I wish you'd give this a read :
Coffee With Sundar - Things I talk over coffee..: Coffee With Prem! - A true Underdog

Expectations & Experiences of my Life

The story of our mod, prem_ravi.. if thats not enough, go to "all I wanted to say about CAT" thread and u'll find all ur answers there..Point is, if you want to achieve something, the whole world conspires to give u that..
Now let me tell u one real small thing while I am at it..
I have 98.24% .. now i had a classmate u had filled up cat form, for the sake of it, and wasnt gonna write it,since he had 1530 in GRE.. still he thought wat the hell, and accompanied me in train to bangalore, where we were to take cat. We studied for 2 days thereon .. and that dude, has 98.96% !! although a little lower QA sectional cuz of which iims ditched him too .. not that he'd have joined.. anyway, so the point is, keep your mind open, .. ppl can achieve this height, easily, if you just use your common sense and CAT is just all abt that rather than HARDCORE HARD WORK.. using brains and lateral approach of thinking is the key. many ppl just lose heart in the prep days and are just out of competition right at that moment..
they see ppl scoring heavily in mocks and they give up .. dont let that happen to urself.. cat is as unpredictable...and its a cliche i need not repeat.. but the thing is, its immaterial how hard and how long you prepare.. what matters is how smartly you prepare. .
thats it from my side.. am a much junior to some ppl here but hope i am helping ..
Also, just to give u a headstart, at lest for DI , solve george summers completely.. I DiD nOT do it.. dint have time.. got to know of the book way too late.. still scraped thru .. so puys, RoCk ON !!
And you can do it if you believe in it.. thats the mantra.. if you dont believe in the fact that you can achieve something, trust me you ARE NOT GONNA ACHIEVE..
Also, now that you all have some time at hand before tests start, i strongly recommend watch Rocky 1-6 .. and write down some of the awesome sentences in it..
One goes like this:
Going in into one more round, when you don't think you can, makes all the difference in the world !
All the very best !

it may be possible that there can be a consensus on a time which is after the office hours...but i believe that many people will be facing this particular problem...

hi raghav
when i propsed this idea i must hav also thought about the restrictions of using messengers in ur office.so there's a solution if u guys are really intersted to join the conference on yahoo.but mostly it will be tough 2 find free time during work hrs which is suitable for every1.so lets sit on weekends atleast for an hour.that particular hr will count much providedly we hav a systematic approach.but till now none of u guys hav come 4wrd.hmmm

hi
quitting a job just to appear CAT is a solution but u never know the decision wil bring colors at the end or not, most likely it puts u in the insecure position.cuz in the interview also u hav to come hard to convince the panel about ur decision.
abt ur roomies, plan a time when they are asleep and u can study after that all cosily
