Re: CAT 2008 for Working Professionals - 22-01-2008, 06:45 PM

Hello Everybody

I am Souresh and this will be first post in PG but not first visit. I have been a regular visitor and like reading posts and articles that feature here in PG.I am presently working at Infosys Technologies, and now currently in Netherlands for a Project. I joined Infosys in 2006, palcements from college(I have done B.Tech in Information technology from Kolkata-West bengal University of technology).I am working in SAP-BW and really intrigued and interested in this technology. My motive of doing an MBA at this stage is to get a grasp of business knowledge to leverage my knowledge of tecnical aspects.I want to move on to functional consultancy from a present profile of a technical consultant.I have done X and Xii(ICSE/ISC) from St James in kolkata. I will be back in India by Feb end and aspire to appear for CAT08, if not hampered by another trip.
I was also wondering how much weightage does premier institutes lay on academics and college brand and all that.
My academics so far
x-76%
xii-71%
B.tech- 7.7 GPA

Fair amt of extracurricular activities.
Well I don't know how much those credentials stand in a wide pool of applicants, specially with lot of them from IITs and NITs and good nacads, extar curricular activities. these sometimes give me the feeling, that I do stand a little chance of making it(especially with after reading the profiles of candidates who have got calls).
Also I request all the PG members, working junta, who have cracked the exam, to share their experiences of preparation, how they managed with workload etc.
I also think we should start with a thread which caters to preparation of CAT08, probably with quant basics, english prep, done at this stage by all of you, or what are your plans.

Hi,

I can't say whether my problem is similar to yours becuase i end up scoring low marks in QA in the mocks but have got good marks in the main CAT. CAT 2007 - QA - 96.85%
CAT 2005 QA - 96.50%

But my overall CAT percentiles drop a little due to my VA scores. But what i have found with my dismal mock scores in QA and good ones in CAT is that, CAT tends ask more of logical maths questions than formula based ones. This may be because they are targeting not only College students but also working professionals with good logical abilities who can comprehend the questions using only the basic maths knowledge with their intrepretation skills.

So i tend to get crack CAT maths section, but fail in the mock tests due to their stress on formula based questions... This is my personal experience and opinion which may not apply to others.. Still...

this is definitely good approach. I had CL material and NS chapter and its problems are good. Last week I started with Career Forum Numbersystem mat, that is also good. The approach now shud be to master the basics, if you already have not. Then go for rigorous problem solving, Arun Sharma would be helpful for lot of good, quality practice problems.

So now you all know my weakness.. So please tell me how to improve my english section to Bell the CAT08...

Should I go to any english institute?? In 2006 I joined CL, chennai.. But I think these all coaching centers only focus on Quant and DI section only...

Sunil
hiii me too was weaker in english since i hailed from non english background in my schooling. when i started my CAT prep i was no way near to the CAT standard. but in CAT 07 i got 99.7 percentile in verbal. so dont worry ,with more efforts ur english can be improved, just read, read , read daily and vigorously. and note down unknown words u come across in a dairy and revise them regularly. do lot of verbal exercises from inst materiials , also think and communicate with people in english .try to use new words in ur daily conversation.
and once u got sufficient confidence try to practise some gmat material like OG10 etc.
read editorials of daily news papers and write summaries ...
believe me over a period of time ull definetly notice considerable increase in ur verbal score.

cheers
srinivas

And here goes my first post ...

Hey can anyone suggest what strategy should be followed for the people who are working and preparing at the same time, coz in many ways its very much different when compared to freshers, It's like dancing on moon in the morning and walking on the earth thereafter?

Any practical aproach would really help !!

The strategy varies from person to person. In general, u shd study consistently for atleast 2hrs/day. Get done with ur basics by july end. Give mocks and analyse them to know ur weakness n strenghts.
Hope it helps u...

-Muks

P.S.: Refer to prev posts, lot has been said abt the strategy.

Re: CAT 2008 for Working Professionals - 23-01-2008, 01:18 AM

Well as the thread starter said this is pretty common as all working individuals face this issue. I gave my CAT 06 and CAT 07 , In )^ scored 98 in english and DI 43 in QA , In 07 scored 90 in QA 34 in VA and 97 in DI . So Dont really know what to think am hoping to get calls from GIM thru the XAT other wise am here with u ppl for CAT 08

Regarding th eperson who needs help in QA , My suggestion is take ur time u have 9 months !!! Practice a lot thats my plan !!
