hi Gargi,
its completely natural and usual to have such a dilemma...
i believe the decision will lay with the individual...
if he/she is very keen on an MBA this year then he/she must not go and take a full fledged attempt at MBA...
aur vaise bhi aajkal recession ki maar kuch zyada hi pad rahi hai...
if the opportunity is really good (say an year or so) then he/she must consider going there...because onsite experience matters a lot and also it makes quite a lot of money too...(recession time main pata nahi kitna milege )...
i will say that its completely a personal take...

Hi Gargi....and your close one

Well, being in the software field, such situations are almost a part of the day to day activity. And acting with slight smartness and logic is a must in such cases.

Ask him to do a self-analysis.........how badly he needs an MBA degree and how quickly he should be into the MBA college? And then he might have an answer to his worries.

The only pointers I can provide you are

- right now its recession time.......and even the placements are at a all time low in MBA colleges........so why not wait for one more season and in the mean time grab this international exposure (and this would certainly add weight to the CV)

- since the performance of your frnd was good (97%ile is good...I think so!) so the chances are very high that he will perform good even the next year when he is back to India. Just ask him to be in touch with things.

- And if nothing of the above convinces him, then ask him not to go anywhere and just prepare for the interviews here in India....and if things get bad for him in the office, then ask him to resign.

Whatever I have said are the two extremes.......as I dont think that there is any middle-way out in situations like this.

Wish him luck.

thanks & regards

My 2 cents..Since your friend has to travel only in Jan 2nd week, I hope by then all her/his exams would have got over & also the CAT 2008 results would have been out..

If he/she has a minimum of 2 IIM calls + couple of other exams have really gone well, then ask him/her to resign immediately after the CAT results..

He/She will have a 1 month notice in which he/she prepare for GD/PI & start attending Job interviews as well..

If he/she doesnt get any IIM calls then he/she can very well fly out of country...

I can show u so many cases, where in people have resigned right in January due to Job pressure & still have converted calls because they believed that they can

Hey all

I have a query and I am really confused.
I gave all the possible MBA exams this year but I see my chances is really less to get through, what should I do next? Should I give cat and others next year or should I give exams for other country and get admission there? Again, they say MBA degree from other country is not valued in India ( is it so, even if you do it from Top college of the country)?
Can anyone help me out here?
Should I give one more try in India or should I opt for abroad?

hi pooja,
there's only one factor which you should consider at this juncture of time...
how keen are you on pursuing MBA this year...
if you can genuinely answer that, i believe you will get the answer to your query as well...

'MBA degree from abroad is not valued in India'
i don't know much about this statement but one thing i can tell you for sure that many people take the GMAT route after trying their luck with CAT in India...and go abroad for studies...
so it hardly makes any difference and above it they get paid handsomely there...(may be not these days because of recession)
after all its your take...
if you very strongly believe that you can crack the exams next year and are determined to do so...then you may have another try...

hope it helps...

Hi Raghav

Thanks for replying.
Frankly and honestly replying I was really keen and sure I will make it this year but somewhere things dn't clicked and landed messing up exams..... And seriously if someone ask me I would say "I want to do it this year"
But again just for a year I don;t want to compromise after all how much difference one year make.
Regarding studying abroad and getting paid there is different but what if I want to come back to India what chances do I stand in that.

hey pooja,
you can always come to India and pursue your job here also...
i believe you are working too...so if you see around yourself, you will definitely find many people who are MBAs from foreign universities...
at least in It sector you will find many of them
even one of manager was an MBA from the Us and after working my organization for 5-6 years opened his own consultancy firm...
so that should not be a problem...
if you are really keen then you must go...
but first do proper research about the same...

Re: CAT 2008 for Working Professionals - 05-01-2009, 05:32 PM

Hi Folks..

I'm working in IT field for past 19 months @ bangalore and sick of it ( same rona dhona ).Gave CAT ,XAT 08' with an average prep but to my dismay i've realized that i'm not upto it as of now.
I'm targeting CAT 09' with extreme seriousness (do or die - i ve to make it ) and hence looking for a study group in Bangalore , commited completely towards killing CAT 09 to the core.I was looking for the thread-Bangalore study group 09' (as there was for CAT 08' but didn't come across any). If puys are interested for the same cause please do pm me.

cheers

Re: CAT 2008 for Working Professionals - 05-01-2009, 10:23 PM

Hi

i am working in Cognizant, Bangalore right now.. and i plan to take CAT 2009 ... i took CAT once when i was in 4th year of engineering and got a decent 96 percentile.. i wanted to join sm weekend class for CAT and even went to IMS centre in Koramangala.. but i am scared that i will end up wasting my time there.. as in it seemed to me that they will do only basics for first 3-4 months... now after paying more than twenty grand, i can't afford to miss the 3-4 months when they are doing the basic.... So i wanted to know if there is an institute in Bangalore suitable for working junta as in where i don't end up wasting my time...

@cataspirant789

I guess self study is the best option for working folks as you wont be able to predict when your workload is going to be lighter or heavier.Coaching classes provide regularity and a study environment.
Chalk out the areas where you think you need to work on and analyse whether you'll be able to fill up the loop holes by yourself or you need external help.Probably then you ll be able to have a more focussed & meaningful purpose with coaching insti.
