Re: CAT 2008 for Working Professionals - 02-09-2008, 02:26 PM

guyz........i am a newbie here on PG,.......

got two years of exp in IT.......

attempted cat for the first tym last year....scored 90%ile.....

i would say i am confident about doing well this year in VA and QA....

but DI is proving to be a hurdle as i never clear the cut-offs....my problem....have not practiced too many reasoning intensive questions adn so kinda get indimidated by them unless they are really straight forward or may be only slighty tricky.....i always look for calculation based qstns.. which are very few to find...neways thngs aren' wrkng out very welll in DI.........

my expectation: someone please guide me a book or prep resource for DI.... please consider that i am planning to prepare till the first week of october intensively....so i am looking for something that will considerably increase my chances for gaining confidence , exposure and thereby clear the cut-offs quite comfortably...again i feel that very tough questions are not what i am looking for as i feel that they are not to be done in CAT if asked......i basically want exposure to maximumm no. of setS that are likely to be asked...so that i increase my knowledge level and thereby the CONFIDENCE....i believe that is all that matters....!!!

guyz ....!!! please help me finalize on the right approach\prep material asap.....iam going home this friday ...so the monthafter that will be very crucial and has to be very productive....

Thanks a ton in advance.....

there r two ways first get any coaching insti prep material n finish the basics..then get all kinda mock papers and rigorously start working on them .. about reasoning thats the best way to go about it..

try tenaday.co.in also

thanks sir...thats exactly what i plan to do and am doing right now...some of the sets though are tough and take a lot of tym, others might not even get solved...neways, wanted to know if trying to complete a book dedicated for DI say "Arun Sharma" will be helpful or rather not doing something as intensive as that will be to my disadvantage...?
.....do these have special approaches for faster "skill set" development.....

i am asking this as i don' want to leave any stone unturned .....

my scores in time mock cat's have started showing up some decent improvement....
earlier used to score 88-94 %ile with 97+ in english, around the 80-93 in QA and around 50 in di.....

did reasonably well in all threes ections this tym round, clearing all three cut-offs(36,18,20(VA,QA,DI)) respectively ...

guess i am getting a lot excited....

well i have seen the srun sharma book on DI.. and i dont think it is upto the standard that you need to practice with the way cat has evolved.

I know many r tough ones thats y asking you before attempting extra mocks other than usual one that u r taking first finish all the basic prep material of any one of the coaching insti.. then take as many mock paper and do it as sectional test

actuall whole DI is mapped into certain type of question eg

1.table kind where the work is more conc on averages and stuff
2. caselet where data is in para format
3. reasoning
4. inflow /outflow or path related ques
5.set theory
and other types.. actually after some time when u ahve done sufficient papers u can start pointing out trends in them.. also questions of set theory is a must to attemp..these question only becomes easy after u have done the basic concept and attempted few with patience

dont loose heart mate til the last batte is fought.. u dont knw how the tide changes so stick on!! and follow a path and dont deviate from it by thinking u r not done this and u have not done that.. many times this induces pressure and u knw CAT is pretty easy..what makes it tough is the pressure and the blunders .. so chillax.. whew! seems lot of gyaan ..

all the best

Re: CAT 2008 for Working Professionals - 02-09-2008, 10:57 PM

Hi All,

I have 5 yrs of experience in an IT firm. I have been taking CAT almost regularly for last 6 years barring 1 year. My percentile has ranged from 89 to 92. Thus I'm hoping, with little practice and luck I can reach 95%.

I would like to ask the forum, what are the best schools to apply for with this profile i.e. 5 yrs exp + CAT 92-95%. Which institutes give more weightage to experience?

Thanks

I'd also appreciate if people can share details about 1 year executive MBAs. I'd prefer to do that rather than 2 year course.
Thanks
