Test Series Selection

Hi puys,

I need your help and guidance in deciding on a test series given by various coaching institutes. I would like to put in the context as to why I am asking this. Last Sunday I went to give free mock CAT given by PT. I think it was very tough paper, and it was no where near the CAT or any other exam. That’s why I have decided to go for TIME or IMS test series and need your help in deciding.

Puys I would like to know about, how the test series given by TIME and IMS fare on following parameters:-

1)How close is the style / content of question papers as compared to CAT, I mean as it is evident from last two years the difficulty level of quant and DI is not that high in CAT.
2)What is the variation in the mock cats in the test series i.e. change in number of questions / sections from which questions are asked etc. in each test. I mean that a test series should also prepare us to deal with the unpredictability of CAT pattern.
3)How realistic is the percentile position provided by the institute

Your thoughts and inputs would be of immense help to me.

please avoid repeating such long posts in different threads....wait for someone to answer your query...have patience...that's the best friend of any manager...else lookout for puys out here who you find helping others...in various posts...pm them...they would provide you wid more accurate information...otherwise you would end up here wid contradicting suggestions from the crowd...i'll try to answer your query ...but please avoid posting such big queries in multiple posts..

Hi,

See its not if the paper is tough...it is of no use...it surely helps in building ur concepts...in CAT the main thing is not to solve all the questions...but to differentiate between what to solve and what to not...in other words...u can say its a process that checks your ability to eliminate the crap and take out the best....nd though i have taken only one
CAT..in 2006....still i know that CAT follows no definite pattern...also..it has no definite syllabus...yes..no definite syllabus...only by years of research we have arrived to an approximation of the topics which are important....so you can't say that if the paper would be hard or easy...be it quantwise...caselets...LR...or EURC....they can introduce anything ..completely alien to us....
So i suggest you not to go for only easy ones....because they put you in a particular comfort zone...and by no means
CAT makers would like to select a manager who loves to be in his/her comfort zone...solving easy questions is very good...infact that's the area to score high...but don't ignore hard questions...hope you get my point

as for your query about the test series...i would suggest you to join TIME...though i m with CL(coz of weekend classrooms)...not simply because it includes maximum student...yep...going by the percentiles and rank...anyone can say this...der's a very close fight for ranks..even in 99+%iles...but also because they perhaps devise a very different method to set the questions...the unexpected pattern method...(though even CL patterns surprised me a couple of times..)
Also...the level of hardness is perhaps never hard in even CAT...i agree..what is required is to interpret the problem correctly and to understand the best way to solve....

Hope i proved to be a bit of help to you

All the best

-Regards
Navneet

Hi Puys..
This issue might look a bit redundant to most of you..but i religiously skimmed through the complete thread but din found this ques being asked before...

The thing is I started my CAT prep like a month back...n I was high on spirits and energy level...I joined a weekend coachin batch(5-9) also as i din wanted to leave any stone unturned...Got few books for QUANT and VA...and began preparing...m a s/w professional n my office hrs are 9-6 which goes to bout 8AM-8PM includin the commutin time....:crazyeye:

For past 1 month i ve been studyin for like 5 hrs a day strechin from 5AM till 7AM and then after office hrs from 8PM-11PM...Apart from a bit of skimmin i do while commutin....

It was all goin fine but since past few days m realizin that this is takin the toll on me....I ve lost my concentration n energy...I get drained out much early in a week say by wed:death: .. n after that i dun have any energy left in me...neither for office nor for my CAT studies...I ve sufferin from constant headaches for past few days...n m too tired to do anythin...even in the mornings...
It gettin difficult for me to get up early n even if I do...The productivity is not wat I expect from myself....
I dun wanna reduce my prep efforts or time...as I ve already lost couple of months since I strted late so dun wanna loose anymore time...

This all might be coz I gave up studyin right after school...Who studies in Engineerin()...n now m managin 2 things at the same time...office as well as study...

Does any of the veterans over here have any ideas or ingenious soln to it...or anybody else facin similar prob???

Any help/ideas would be appreciated....

Hey Guys,

I am Sundar Rajan G S... I am now a student in IIM Bangalore..

A lot of you might be struggling with verbal.. Last year (CAT 2007 prep), even I had similar issues.. But I eventually got 99.61

Since a lot of guys have been asking about how to improve verbal scores.. I documented my verbal strategy here..

Handling CAT Verbal Section and Reading Comprehension Coffee With Sundar

Basically, the gist is this..

I had bad accuracy in verbal.. So.. I wanted to maximize the number of attempts.. so I gave 1 hour for it.. The first one hour and I attempted all questions..
Might work.. Might not work for you.. But thought I would let u guys knw about it..

All the best.. C u in IIM Bangalore..

hi saumya,
the batch intake for XLRI doesn't depend completely on work experience...
freshers are also selected...
but that doesn't mean you don't have an edge over others...
work experience is always given weightage...2-3 years of work experience is great and rest depends on the first stage i.e. the written test...
so best of luck...
