Here's the rough split of seats for all 6 IIMs.

IIMA 260 (I am not 100% sure of this - I read in a magazine that the seats are increasing to 260 this year)

IIMB 210

IIMC 250

IIML 240

IIMK 120

IIMI 120

The total adds up to ~1200 seats (only 900 seats for General Merit though )

One correction ,

IIMB Chairman S.M.Datta has gone on record to say that IIMB will increase intake in the PGP to 260(approx) this year to make up for shortfall of funds . Hope this info was useful .

Re: Wat is the number of seats in IIMs(for general) - 03-04-2004, 01:11 PM

hi.............

rumours have it that IIM-B has sent out 927 calls.

usually the total number of calls sent out by d IIMs combined together is in the ratio 1:4 or 1:5.considering that there arnd 1200 seats they must have sent out over 5000 calls.again the number of unique people getting calls is in the ratio of arnd 1:2.5 making it arnd 3000 unique calls.hope that helps.

best of luck.

hi nakul i think and i am possibly sure that u have got it all wrong with the number of uniqe calls
All the six IIMs combined give a call to round abt 5400 students
with multiple number of calls the students got this yr it seems like on an average every student has 3 calls
so i guess the unique calls wud be in the region of 2000
and with a call to conversion ratio of 5:3
but all this is hypothetical
i dunno wats the surety of all this but this is also based on the figures said by Careerlauncher
abt the IIM B thing ya they have sent 950 calls with a final call to 350 to 500 ppl

Re: Wat is the number of seats in IIMs(for general) - 03-04-2004, 02:50 PM

Hi,
If we look at the schedule of IIM Lucknow, they are interviewing 48 students everyday and in total there are 21 days ,therfore we can approximate that the total calls sent out by lucknow is 21*48=1008.And even if we look at the percentiles of people who have got calls are 98+, there are ofcourse people who have no calls at even 99+ percentile and there are persons who have 1-2 calls at 97.5+ percentile.
If we further assume that we had arnd 125000 students sitting for CAT this year than the students who are having calls are the top 2 percentiles, That makes around 2500.
This analysis clearly indicates that people who are having 1-6 calls from IIMs are limited to at the most 2700-2800, not more than that.(This does not include SC/ST/PH candidates). Now we have around 1200 seats and 25% are reserved. That leaves 900 seats for general candidates.Therefre selection is limited to 1 out of 3 (maybe less).
Now let's take lucknow, 1008 calls, around 5% absentees (considering the fact that calls are clashed, some people missing buses/trains,personal problems etc).Leaves 950 people attending the interview. Now these also include the SC/ST/PH candidates, they are arnd 100-150 in number.let's take 150.removing these 150,we are left with 950-150=800 people of general category attending the interview for abt 180 general seats.Out of this people choose IIM A,B,C,XLRI,JOB, other options etc. Finally arnd 400-500 people are getting final admit from lucknow in first, second lists. And yes every seat can make a difference.

Comments invited for this exhaustive analysis.

According to IIMB, they have sent 900 calls. Now lets work with this figure.

Most people getting calls from IIMB will also get from A. This year A has been pretty weird so lets assume that 300 get calls from IIMA but not from IIMB, so that 1200 in total( A & B)

you can add another 200 to take care of IIMC( i.e people who have got calls from C but not A,B). Now we are at 1400.

L will call a lot of people who havent got calls from top 3. So we can add another 500 to this figure. Now we have 1900. For I & K, we can add another 500 again coming to a figure of 2400.

This year 1.25 lakh people gave CAT. So we can say that people with 98 percentile and above would have got 1 call atleast. Thats the top 2400 for you. There are some vagaries that IIMA has exhibited. ( I know a guy with 97.02 percentile and a call from A!!!)

As you can see, this is a totally speculative figure but according to me experience, will be very close to the real thing.

What do you say junta?
