Re: CAT 2008 Aspirants - 23-04-2008, 03:39 PM

I don't know why but many a times TIME seems to get the question pattern somewhat closer to actual test.
I heard in 2006 there was a caselet in DI in CAT which was similar to TIME AIMCAT
and 2004 entire VA section in XAT was similar to TIME MockXAT.

Frankly haven't checked myself as I am still in just planning stages for CAT 2008 but this is what I got from feedbacks.

Taking tough tests is a way by which you can familiarize yourself with a variety of questions. You may fail to solve those once or twice and overall, you may fail to score well enough, but this is where you can motivate yourself to do better by trying those tough problems and acing them in the future exams/mocks.

This way, most of the questions would seem easy to you, including the ones that appear in CAT. This way surely worked for me and should work for anyone else as well, provided he's able to see his negative points and willing to work on them and thus, compete with the rest

As my personal exp

newspaper's editorial: daily
divide the material dont just do quants or di.. mix the subjects
i used to do english daily for an hr or so and then either quant or di

my study hours were
3 hrs daily..n more in weekends

MOCK CATs ..enrolled to atleast and max two

till march-april finish the funda books and religiously do verabal..focus not only on jst RC but to ur lang.. and words..

its like this

by end of march-april: done with fundas
may-june- revise strengthen the weak areas not comf
july-start with mocks: analysis.. then identify ur weak area

u can change the time span according to need.. this is what i followed

how to analyse
well it is everything
what u need to analyze
1- where u went wrong
a) were u wrong due to lack of knowledge
b) were u wrong due to lack of time
c) were u wrong due to silly mistake
d) were u wrong due to wrong understanding of concept
e) were u wrong due to marking a fluke
2- where u were not able to attempt
a) was it lack of time
b) was it lack of knowledge
c) was it fear of more time utilzation
3- where u went right
a) u were confident
b) it was a fluke
c) it took more time than it should take
d) it was an intelligent guess with some conceptual backing
4- how much time allocation u gave to each section
a) were there ques which u can solve but was not able to reach that page
b) did u gave too much time to the section u r good/bad on

Now u have a good mix of what concepts u r lacking and once u have given few tests u can easily tell which topic u r good at and which u r not so good
so this will help u in question selection as well will give u direction for further preparation as well

follow this..after ever 5-6 mocks revisit them..n analyse..

15 days before CAT ..stop with mocks..no tests..just general reading and some problem solving...relax urself ...
D-dAY: jai mata di

p.s. there r few mistakes i did..like in the end i got too saturated ..so make sure u dont burn urself out..do relax in between...my perf in the end got affected coz of that

I quite agree with u.....and people do make this mistake of rating a tougher paper higher in my opinion....now dont groan at me guys....there's this Prof Baiju u might have heard of him.....speaking of unrealistically tough papers he takes the cake it was JEE style papers that tugh........I believe that every exam has something different in it which u need to identify and play the game accordingly.....the JEE tests ure conceptual strengths and how good u r at cracking the toughest of problems.....the CAT is a paper which giving u enough time say 5 hours for the worst u'll score more than the 100 percentiler......it tests u not on something difficult its extremely basic, but on ure application in a short time when posed with a variety of questions the key being variety or the surprise element.....
Which is why I advise u to chose that test series which each day throws something different at you and not in terms of being tough but in terms of just being something u did not expect.
The other way is of course the "if u can solve these surely u can solve something as easy as the CAT" line of thinking which is fine but not how I thought......There's no harm in solving the TIME papers of course there is some quality stuff there but keep ure options open.

i agree tat TIME AIMCATS r very tuf..but i also agree wid varun..tat u need to solve papers tat throws new challanges every now nd then....

If one is able to get decent scores in TIME mock papers then his/her confidence goes high...plus wats most important is analysis part of AIMCTAS...wen u try to solve those problems bak home u come out wid very good methods...which may b useful in solving the problem of lesser difficulty with absolute ease...

and Most important is most of the good ppl join AIMCATS..so competition is really very tuf in AIMCATs...so TIME test series gives u a true picture...wer u stand xactly...( m not telling tat other test series dont). When u compete wid best brains of country..den only it fires u up to improve urself all the time nd b among the best of bests...

Re: CAT 2008 Aspirants - 25-04-2008, 11:24 PM

Hi CAT 2008 aspirants, i've taken cat in 2007 and joining symbiosis pune(sims). I have a few mock papers with me which i would like to sell to the interested people. I also have all the previos year cat papers from 2001 till date with solutions (i've joined a few coaching institutes and did not use them). I also have previous years prospectus of quite a few colleges from iift, lbs, imt, imi etc. if you wanna have a look at them to help yourself in deciding if its worth to apply to those colleges. Anyone who's interested in getting these send me a private message!!!
