Nothing much...

Last year also we used to get lassi/softdrinks/coffee etc after the interview. I dont think that there was any pattern between selection & offering of eatables...

IIM A GD/PI Exp. - 17-04-2004, 03:10 PM

Hi guys...

Not sure if this would be of much help...mebbe for the next batch (lets hope I am not one of them !!)
Well, had my IIMA at delhi center, on the 15th 2:00Pm. 8 ppl in a group. One person didn't turn up, but mysteriosly there was another, taking his place. Probably he had missed his turn before.. (scary )
Anyways, had a case...a real complex one so as to say... pretty much ambiguous facts...lots of numbers...etc etc). Pitched in with a few points and summarized the thing. above average performance.

Next came the interview.... pretty cool. actually very cool. Started with q's around work ex, what I do...is itr challenging. The business level understanding of the product I am developing. Went for 5 minutes. Hobbies : I said TT and I love watching movies...write reviews for them. There was a sudden twinkle in their eyes... I obviously didn't like it. For the rest of the 15 odd minutes.....all that we discussed was indian film industry , world films, hollywood, animation and 3d effects industry,. which are the big labs, whats lucas's lab called, turnover of indian post production labs(present and estimated), last movie reviewed (said LOTR), what did you like about peter jackson, present nasscom report on indian animation industry...nasscom chaiman...why does he have funny name (jerry rao...they found it amusing) Answered most of the q's pretty convincingly...except the name part.
Khair ...that was it. 2 maths questions...one being to write Taylor's theorem (what the !!!!) and second a matrix q (answered that).

Thats it... Thanks.
All throughout... I greedily kept looing at the toffee plate...but they did not offer me anything.

What do you thing about the interview?
Note: Be very sure about your hobbies... these guys know everything about everything.

Re: IIM A GD/PI Exp. - 17-04-2004, 04:02 PM

This interview happened on the 9th of April (at IIMB, 9:00am) . Its late to be posting these experiences, but if itll help neone.....next batch, whoever..then i might as well....

This was the only interview i attended where there was close to complete seriousness on the part of the candidates. For I, L it was extremely casual, and B and C midway. For some reason, all the groupings this time round were zonal, so it ended up that any GD/PI group i was in were mostly Keralites, and the rest (except for the C interview) would be from some other small city. For A,B,L,K i ended up having the GD with my college mates/junta from IMS or CL Trivandrum/school seniors. I thought this was strange.....theres something to being able to interact well with a group of strangers, but when half the GD group consists of your buddies then the group dynamics do change some, and things can get very casual and relaxed.

The GD:
A case study was given. Pretty simple: Guy wants to have some famous rock group perform on the last day of his college cultural festival, of which hes in charge or something. His college Director thinks there will be trouble as these people are very famous, but guy persists (they have the resources for this) and Director not in favour but agrees, and absolutely refuses to have anything to do with it. And if anything goes wrong, blame rests on guys head and no more fests for the college. On the night of the rock show, the bands flight arrives late, theres a traffic jam, and its already very late. A 10,000 strong crowd is waiting for them. Guy calls SP and asks for road clearance for them, SP says ok but get Director to request for it. What should guy do?

the discussion: It was quite an obvious topic, with everyone speaking plenty. Up to a point it was going smoothly and pretty logically. Then someone suggested that perhaps the band could call from a mobile from wherever they are and speak to the crowds to pacify them some. Immediately someone else jumped in saying a better idea would be to get them into a cyber cafe and use a webcam to relay some words from the band to the audience waiting for them (after all anyone could impersonate from a mobile fone right? ). Another guy begins to snicker. Fight begins..... The mobile phone and webcam idea guys vs the ones who think its ridiculous.....and here the discussion essentially stopped. Two of us started to talk about what he could do better next time, some of the rest are still with the webcam debate.....and at this point we were told to stop.

The PI:
The only properly structured PI i faced. It wasnt a go-with-the-flow interview.....they didnt ask me anything about myself or any general questions. More importantly there was absolutely no scope to lead the interview anywhere....first man asks lots of tech, second man asks general awareness questions, and third man observes. The questions were very pointed, asking for very precise answers. The panel was friendly and wasnt stressing anyone out, but one certainly HAD to know tech to do well in the interview

<Im not comfortable with the qn-ans-qn-ans format.....)

Tech guy started... Explain DC and AC motors. (Third sem topics that i was glad to leave behind ..)I gave them the basics, and they grilled me further about how the speed can be changed, what about the phase etc etc .... no idea. Then tech guy lifts a pencil and drops in onto the table, and asks me to explain the dynamics of the motion in molecular terms. Interesting question there.....i gave them a half-explanation (they didnt look happy with it) after which they asked me why the intermolecular attraction among the air molecules is less than that among the pencil molecules ( that was part of my explanation) ..... gave them somehting they didnt accept. Heck...isnt that why its a gas in the first place???? then something about Control systems...engg subject,,, then about my 6th sem project. (For the techies: its a microcontroller based temperature controller cum digital thermometer which gives an on-off output ...., is very easy to use and has some pretty decent features.....this guy tells me its not different from a kettle coz of the on-off control thing ). Some more questions about general electronix, instrumentation , companies in instrumentation, etc etc. And why traffic lights are red, orange and green. Tech guy finishes his part.
Next guy: How would you increase foreign investment in India in the instrumentation field? What all has been done to increase foreign investment generally? Why should we have foreign investment? Do you think the ruling front has done much in the past 5 years? What about Congress as a party....how are they? This went on for a short while and then it was over. They offered me biscuits and toffees and i was out. I shut the door behind me and realised id left my handbag inside ....

Overall ive performed badly here. With all that tech, lots of which i couldnt answer and even of what i answered, i guess it was really showing that i was not on sure footing. The tech part went on for a good 15 minutes.....they were probably probing to see if i knew *anything*,, and after a point that sort of stressed me out...it affected the second part too.....((

Anyways all the best !!!! .... uve got patience buddy if uve read this far!!!!

Re: IIM A GD/PI Exp. - 18-04-2004, 03:09 PM

hi all...here's how my A went...

case study: anita whatsername is a leading marketing executive for some cola company KKIL....and a consumer forum has come out with a study showing that KKIL colas have got an unusually high level of pesticides in em....the forum doesnt have any accreditation yet it has managed to whip up publicity....
while KKIL manages to conform to indian standards which only require that water used shd be potable, this water itself has a high level of pesticides due to illegitimate usage on the part of unnamed persons...

what shd anita do?

this was somehow the best gd/case study ive ever been party to....4 guys n 4 gals...the gals were softspoken more or less n the guys were courteous...breadth of discussion was amazing and absolutely no fishmarket...im sure everyone wuda gotten a nod frm the panel....
my personal contribution in terms of content generation was pretty good if i may say so myself...managed to bring in a historical parallel regarding johnson n johnson and the tylenol serial killings in the early 80s...pretty famous case study at most b-schools....my take was that anita shd act like the then ceo james burke and use this as an opportunity to reassure the public of the intended goodwill of KKIL....use the publicity whipped up to highlight the illegal usage of pesticides n blah blah...
the discussion boiled down to corporate citizenship and the fact that business practices and ethics could/should co-exist....

interview was another story altogether...the panel were very friendly...two oldish guys n one very youngish guy...he looked younger than most of the guys who were gonna get interviewed...

they go thru the form n can get into details over the lil things...esp hobbies..

i was first asked abt my name...then onto some biblical history...
moved onto my college...allahabad...some significances...i did make a pointed mention that it happened to be prof mmjoshi's constituency....tangled around a lil bit on that....his re-election chances esp....

moved onto some dbase questions...not too bothersome...
then one guy wanted me to get some sorta decision variable to decide on possible routes for goods trains as opposed to passenger ones...din really understand the question n i guess it showed up in the lame answer i offered...

the youngish chap takes over....
who's the last srilankan pm? ranil wickeremashinghe
whats the srilankan crisis?
stumbled around...told him that kumaratunge wants to extend her presidential power to beyond the next two years after which she'd have to step down constitutionally...so she's trying to amend the constitution despite not holding an absolute majority....nakko..he wanted the ltte stuff...me clueless...

name some non-european countries where european languages are predominantly spoken...caveat only the non-english ones..
i come up with brazil..it speaks portuguese...
latin american ones....they speak spanish or some variant...
north african ones...tunisia algeria n other ex-french colonies..they speak french...
he wanted some eastern country...cudnt come up with any...
he suggests philippines.. i tell him their predominant language is tagalog...he asks whether it descended frm some european tongue...ive no idea...

what are romance languages? i struggle here...i know they're 5 languages but cudnt name all of em...romanian french italian spanish i cud come up with...dunno if these were correct themselves...dont have the heart to check up...

last guy's turn

what sorta books dya review? i name him a few...
what dya keep in mind while reviewing? tell him some stuff...
asks some questions based on that...why some reviews seem to meander on without any suggestion of the book's agenda? i tell him that some genres like magic realism are difficult to review...cite marquez as an example....he din seem too convinced...
dya know any famous indian reviewer? vir sanghvi...
no no any famous one! errrr....khushwant singh?
no no no any famous writer cum reviewer....i put my hands up...

do u think that e-books will take over the publishing industry?
i tell him why i dont think so...compare it with the music industry....tell him that e-books cannot convert existing booklovers...maybe if we have a generation of kids brought up on ebooks, something might happen...unlike mp3s where we had a "flag day" so to speak (napster) where everyone suddenly went onto mp3...thats not gonna happen for books n if it cuda, it already wuda...
shakes his head all the while adding to my discomfort...

"u may have ur toffee"...
here i take the plunge n ask them whether this is supposed to have some significance...they all raise one eyebrow each..i tell em abt all the theorizing done by us chaps n they laugh....no significance although accepting a toffee would be considered polite...they ask me whether i see any hidden motive?
i shrug n say that i feel its just a random act of courtesy....one that somehow unintentionally managed to enhance the enigma of the whole iim-a process...grins grins all round
we part our ways...

sigh my fingers r aching...do i get a prize for a really long post or something?

to sum up...gd was fantastic...pi was definitely one of my worse ones...hope acads/catscores/gd outweighs a shambolic pi...

end of my mba campaign....im sick n tired of cat n iim n mba n sensex values n dollar equations n what not....
somebody tell me which way's home..

best of luck all
John

Well the groupings are not "zonal" but based on roll numbers. It was like this only last year also except for C,K which had a score based grouping(Which I feel was pretty bad). And if you are from any of the major cities, the chances of you ending up with your buddies are very less, but as there are very few candidates from centres like Calicut, you might have ended up with your buddies mostly.

And dont feel bad that you were sitting with your buddies, because in your firms also you might be sitting with ppl you know, you work with, but may have conflicting interests on issues being discussed. In fact last year also, by the time we reached the last interivew (B for us) 5-6 of us who had 4/6 interviews in the same panel were pretty good buddies - but that changed only the pre-GD & post-GD atmosphere, not the GD itself.

Anyways all the best for the final results...
