Re: The Official PaGaLGuY Counselling Thread for CAT 2007 -

Hi All,
may you all be warned.. this post is going to be reaallly long
I dunno why, but my overall percentile is always constant..what changes is the marks I get in each section.
i have always felt that english is my strong section..I always manage to clear the cutoff, and add enough here to clear the overalls too
My weakness has always been maths..(or so i presumed before SIMCAT 2).I worked rally hard at it.. and score has always been increasing..last time I even managed to clear the cutoff..But to my horror.. my DI marks were abysmal..not even worth mentioning..and though I cleard in Eng, was not very happy.. Its my "scoring section"
guys!! and i just managed a measly 91 pc(ironically less than even maths).. But this is something I fail to understand.. why are my maths marks improving and the others showing a decreasing trend??I dont give any extra time for Maths..(so the time factor is ruled off, i guess)..With Di, my problem is that, if the section is easy, I get absolutey wonderful marks, but as soon as they peg it up a notch higher, I panic and underperform.. Even if i waste 5 mins on 1 q, I dont feel like doing the whole paper..(I feel that the others have already started scoring.. and there is not much of a chance now).. Have any of u felt this way?? ANd if so, could you please give me strategies to tackle it?? And in VA and RC- I feel that i used to do well in papers where there are many questions and accuracy doesnt matter too much..Also, I reallly need to increase my OAs also.. They are always hovering around 95.. did any of you face similar problems? Could you please please tell me how to improve..I have taken a lot of pains (as is evident) to write this post... many thanks in advance!!!

Providing links and all is great But what we want this thread to be is a place where people would get some personalized replies.. I know most of these queries are repetitive and may be answered before countless number of times on the forum, but as I said just visualize yourself in the shoes of the nervous CAT aspirant.. What would please you more - a personalized reply directed at you or some generic link..
It does not mean that you stop sharing these wonderful links, but something more along with links will actually go a long way in making this thread a success So hope to see some queries answered here. As to the question of why I am not answering queries here, I do not consider myself to be qualified enough to answer them..
So lets see some answers flowing in people

I think the above is a very valid point.!
But - Nikhil - Have you seen visualized the thread from both sides?
DEMAND (from CAT aspirants) and SUPPLY ( of advice)
I mean there are tons and tons of CAT apirants out there who would love to have some hand-holding done in the nervous days before the CAT!!
And it is very important and beneficial to them. No denying that!
But there might be trouble in finding enough people to provide personalized advice due to time constraints.
The average forum visitor here is one who wants to crack the CAT. Or is already in B-School. In both cases Time being a at premium for him!!!
Possibly one way of tackling this concept is to have a battery of Experts and allot them a day of the week. And 1-2 people (depending on how many ppl volunteer) would be responsible for queries posted on that particular day and so on..
Just a thought ...
Let me know what you think....
Plus I have always strongly believed ...
"Give a man a fish - And you feed him for a day"
Teach him to Fish - and you have fed him for the rest of his Life!!
So too for the CAT

To make this thread and initiative a success, a seamless response to the queries is a must, else it will soon die a natural death like the 'Ask Agony Aunt' thread.
How about a few regulars / veterans doubling up at Counselors here? Others too can respond!

@tanveer
your idea of allocating different days to ppl for counselling may not work too well...the reason i say this is because at the Bschools, our schedules are very haphazard and hence it is difficult for us to commit on a particular timing. However,am sure all the PGites who can help will definitely do so whenever they are free and bump into this thread..
and also i feel fellow CAT aspirants can be of great help too...junta in B schools are kind of out of touch..u are the ppl who are doing the mocks week after week and hence might be able to help better....

Hi Prahalad,
That is exactly what I said earlier
Most people on the forum have a limited amount of time at their disposal.
At the same time people who post their query for counselling require a quicker response time than the average poster..else the whole purpose is defeated.
SO - only if we are able to arrange a few dedicated counsellors who can commit some time to the thread can we hope to make it a success!!
What do puys say??

Probably the best solution would be to get hold of the Mock CATs of CL/IMS and take their DI section as Sectional Tests of 50 minutes .
That way you can take the test and analyse whether you are choosing the right questions . Once the analysis is done. You can use the learnings in the test on the next day.
Also the sprints / Take -offs of CL should be ideal material for such practice.
Finally -round it off with DI sections of the last TEN Years CAT papers.
Attaching a document that you might find useful.
Also Hound some of the DI Gods to extract tips on DI from them...
