Cool Mock Cat Disaster's and Fluctuating Percentiles - Let's Discuss - 10-09-2007, 01:30 PM

Hi Puys,

We generally go to the official mock cat/AIMcat threads and see the high scores and percentiles while our percentile is fluctuating and not very good. We end up getting demoralized and finally end up doing badly on D-day.

Actually the truth is that mock's are important, but you cannot rely on them to predict your CAT score. Lets discuss our fluctuating percentiles and the reasons so that we end up doing good in CAT.

All The Best!

Cheers!
Vicky

Hi

I think we should concentrate more on applying new strategies to solve the mocks instead of the percentile.

As the percentile's have always been a suprise.

Re: Mock Cat Disaster's and Fluctuating Percentiles - Let's Discuss - 10-09-2007, 02:19 PM

My guess is friends we get too worked up by other people scores...This happens due to peer pressure and a need to confirm to the high standards of junta around (specially more in IITs).I guess this makes us loose the whole purpose of giving mocks which is according to me to check one's progress and implement one's strategies in the Mocktest.

I personally do get worked up by all the big scores floating around here and as a result end up trying to score more on my mocks without giving due weightage to my sectional scores jst to look good overall...

I guess the solution lies in looking inwards and not outwards or else it becomes one more exercise in futility and disgust.

Re: Mock Cat Disaster's and Fluctuating Percentiles - Let's Discuss - 10-09-2007, 02:46 PM

nice initiative..
my percentile vary like hell..
in the open simcat i got 99.5%ile while in the next free aimcat i got a pathetic 69%ile
likewise in the first two maxcats i got 98.4 and 99.6 %ile and in the first simcat i got 97.65%ile.. all the scores were ok but in the simcat 2 i am getting just 50 marks which will be somwhere around 60 %ile.
the main reason that my scores fluctuate are:
- i consider english to be a scoring section.
- my math and di have always been avg or just above it. so my general tendency is to maximize in english
- in both the tests in which i performed poorly i got bashed in english
- whenever english is challenging, i tend to flounder as i go in for large number of attempts

so my problem is how to keep my attempts in control and also how to select the suitable questions..?
can anyone help me

hey all,This is gonna be my favourite thread....my scores fluctuate like hell....i m tired of writing mock after mock evry sunday and m totally down and out....I m researching on all the positives and negatives and this is what i have noticed:ont consider any section to be your strength or weakness. The general tendency is that once you think that a particular section is a strong section for you, then you tend to have a higher performance expectation and if by any chance you dont do well in that section then the feeling keeps haunting you in a particular paper...AIMCATS/MOCKCATS(esp aimcats with due respect to TIME) are nothing but preparing you for worst case scenarios.Shit the scores, just learn how could you have optimised, either by guessing or by a little nice approach.Try diff strategies, ask yourself how could have i attacked this paper....IS my strategy really working...did i get nervous....How could that piece of **** score so high....have the ATTITUDE....Also PG is a combi of 100 high scoring candidates thats it....dnt get demoralised by so many high scores here.....BAAKI yaar it is a mind game, pack your ego in your bag and just move on and love every paper as a new GF that you get to see every sunday, flirt with her, play with her but dont stick to her,coz all the GFS will help you in making the BIG LADY yours...and she will agree to marry you!!!!will keep posting these so called words of wisdom..have plenty of these....!!!regards!

Re: Mock Cat Disaster's and Fluctuating Percentiles - Let's Discuss - 10-09-2007, 05:28 PM

Hi Guys..

It's quite evident that as I started this thread, I am facing the same issue..

My %tiles (approx numbers as I remember)

AIMCAT 820 - 93

AIMCAT 819 - 91

AIMCAT 818 - NA

AIMCAT 817 - 78

AIMCAT 816 - NA

AIMCAT 815 - 91

AIMCAT 814 - NA

AIMCAT 813 - 68

AIMCAT 812 - 82

AIMCAT 811 - 91

And dont ask about the last two

I consider DI and RC as my strength but they screwed me in the last to mocks.. I am working nd havent touched books since two years and have 16 day leave before CAT to do it all.. My focus had to be quant in those 16 days but now it seems to me that everything is going wrong.. is it?
I dont think so, I analysed and found out that it really depends on one's attitude (as someone has already mentioned).. so, if you have the right mindset on the D-day you might get the right score.. but this is still confusing :s

A Brilliant thread and especially for people like me - I'm a first timer @ CAT so I do not expect Miracles and my first MOCK showed me exactly where I stand , slowly but steadily I moved my percentiles upwards from 50 's to 60 to 70' and got to around 80% ile in MOCK 5 - but MOCK 6 was the disaster of my life - it was only marginally different but my score sunk like the Titanic.

VA , RC and DI are my strong points but Quant is a chronic headache - I have lost quite a bit of confidence after this mock and don't know if I should experiment with Stratigies furthur.
