One thing in defence of the question perhaps....since they have not given any data about whether not attempting=0 marks(or indeed anything else), we should probably assume that the candidate attempts all questions in the paper

but if we have to assume that all Qns shud be attempted with th the information given..then we shud be attempting all the Qns in this AIMCAT as well coz Instruction 6 on the front page of th AIMCAT says that

"Each section carries 90 marks. All Qns carry 3 marks each. Each wrong answer will attract a penalty of 1 mark."

Exactly the information given in the Qn as well...

What say you guys??

Re: [02-Sep-07] TIME AIMCAT 0809 Discussions - 03-09-2007, 10:41 AM

Hi All,
After a disastrous AIMCAT 0810, this paper was a respite! But, I am gross unhappy with the VA section of TIME. I can't even dream to get such readable passages in CAT and in many a questions I strongly suspect the answers given, (given that in CAT'06 all institutes had at least 10 wrong answers out of 25)
Anyways, my scores go like:
QA: 25(9r, 2w): Initially I felt unhappy abt QA score, but it looks Decent.
DI: 32(11r, 1w): I did 11 - 15 right but I stand for those who remembered what I forgot!
VA: 29(14r,13w): Really confused whether one should benchmark oneself against such a VA section!
Cheers,
Dhruv

Started with QA my strength ... 40 mins ... attempted seven questions ...
was very difficult .... went to VA .. gave 40 mins attempted most the va part ... read one rc .. left it ... read another one attempted three questions in that one ...
somehow I feel that either va or rc of the time question paper will be moderately difficult ... this time rc part was difficult(atleast for me )
went on to DI ... started with the seed tennis set attempted all of them ...
attempted the next set also ... went on to the petrol diesel set attempted three there ... 40 mins ... now 30 mins left .... came back to QA ... could do the second set after 10 mins ... was able to arrive at a relation between n q and p ... 12 marks attempted two more in the first set ... total 13 ... 20 mins done ... came back to DI .... attempted one question left in the seed set ... I left the first set right away after 2-3 mins since am going now here .... came back to va/rc couldn't do much though ...

overall I felt that the paper was on the moderately difficult side ... QA was really tough DI was the easiest .. three sets are there for the taking ...
VA/RC I can't comment much .. since it is my nemesis

Hope It is of some help atleast for few of u guys ...

AIMCAT Analysis

AIMCAT0809 Analysis

They come in all sizes and shapes, and are identified by their
hallmark ability to give CAT aspirants a rather tortuous time! Of
course, we’re talking about the AIMCATs – the benchmark for any CAT
aspirant to reckon with. With more than half of the AIMCATs through
in the course of the preparation for CAT2007, AIMCAT0809 may have
given many students a mixed bag in terms of boosting their
confidence in one way and crumbling it in another at the same time.
In short, this paper was both familiar and different in everything –
pattern, length and difficulty level at the same time. The only
problem for most of the students would have been that they were
simply not prepared to see these three combined into such a weird
mix.

AIMCAT0809 was a 90-question paper, with thirty questions in each
section. But then, there were no sub sections this time around and,
thankfully, there were only four choices to grapple with per
question. Each question carried three marks and wrong answers
carried minus one mark. That was the familiar part. But the quant
section, with just eight sets of questions to choose from would have
come as a shocker and really upset the time-proven strategies of
many a student. This possibility, that the usual choice that the
quant section afforded could disappear overnight, would have barely
crossed the minds of students. It would have upset so many of them
that, on a lighter note, rumours are that there were several
instances of test takers walking up to the invigilator asking if
they could get just a few questions more to be able to proceed with
their QA section! Could the actual CAT also change the face of the
quant section so drastically? That’s a question that cannot be
answered with any certainty, and is best dealt with by actually
being prepared for any eventuality on the D-day. On the whole,
AIMCAT0809 was of a level of difficulty slightly more than that of
CAT2006.

Let us now take a brief look at each section of the paper.

Section I – DI/Reasoning:
The DI section of this AIMCAT was an excellent mix of a variety of
question types, from pure and elementary reasoning based sets, to
quant based caselets and the usual dose of reasoning based DI sets.
The first set, on the itinerary of a rock band, was slightly above
average in difficulty level, but many who are strong in pure
reasoning based questions would have benefited by cracking it
completely. The second set, on the draw of matches for a tennis
tournament, was an original CAT model, and was of an average level
of difficulty. The third set, was a slightly quant based caselet and
was quite doable. The fourth set, on the buying and selling of fuels
in four provinces, at the first look, would have seemed like a
rather complicated set, not worth one’s time. However, while one
would not be to blame for having left it out completely, it was not
really as difficult as it seemed. A quick, but thorough, reading of
the information given would have shown it to be a rather simple,
percentage calculations based set – definitely doable, but
time-consuming perhaps. The fifth set, on the exit polls and
election results, was a rather interesting set, largely observation
based, involving basic additions and subtractions. The last set, on
the travelling salesman and his allowances, was also a comparatively
new type of set, but was not very difficult either. On the whole,
this section can be rated to be on par with the DI section in an
actual CAT.

An average student could possibly score around 16+ marks in this
section. Any score from 28 to 38 would be good, 39 to 50, very good
and 50+, excellent.

The cut-off score in this section is expected to be around 23 marks.

Section II – Quant:
With just eight mark-laden sets, and barely any choice in choosing
the topics to attempt from, this section would have seriously upset
the approach of most students. The cut-off should surely see a
considerable dip and so should the scores across the board. However,
there was some amount of choice, as the sets were on various topics
– Numbers, Time and Work, Time and Distance, Geometry, P & C and
Functions and Graphs. Most of the sets were either difficult or very
difficult and the three sets that could be considered to be
easy/doable were the second set, i.e., the one on Time and Work, the
fifth set, i.e., the one on Geometry, and the last but one set,
i.e., the one on placing posts in Mr. Lal’s garden.

An average student could have managed to score just around 8+ marks
in this section and a good score would be around 20 to 30 marks. Any
score from 31 to 45 can be considered very good and 45+, excellent.

The cut-off score in this section is expected to be around 14 marks.

Section III – VA/RC:
The VA/RC section of AIMCAT0809 was as normal as can be expected,
without any nasty surprises like in CAT2006. The VA questions
included the traditional PFQ’s, fill in the missing part, grammar
based questions and the usual LR based questions. On the whole, the
VA part was of a medium level of difficulty and was one’s best bet
to garner marks by investing considerably less amount of time. The
RC passages were, however, not a cake-walk, to say the least, and
carried more than half the weightage in terms of marks allotted.
The passages were both time-consuming and were followed by some
fairly difficult questions.

A student with an average ability in VA/RC could look forward to
scoring around 20+ marks and any score from 36 to 45 can be
considered good. Any score from 46 to 55 would be very good and 55+,
excellent.

The cut-off score in this section is expected to be around 28 marks.

The overall cut-off score in this paper for at least one IIM call
should be around 86 marks and any score above 98 should fetch at
least 3 to 4 IIM calls.
