Hi frnds
i had my IIM K GD/interview today at IIM Cal today ie, on 29th march

The Gd was a passage which basically had to do with the rot in the judiciary system in india
we were given 1 min to read, 2 mins to analyse and 12 mins to speak
it was a very well managed gd which was no where near a fish market.every participant had a chance to speak.
moving on to the interview process i have three years of work ex so basically no grilling on acads.more of HR realated questions and work ex
the interview was over in round abt 15 mins
and the best part is the panelist were very friendly and made me feel at ease

thats it guys/gals wud be posting more of my experiences as and when they happen

also the questions on work-ex were bout general organistaion, job responsibilities stuff or bout the technical aspects of the job.
and in case u know of the kind of interview that engineer freshers in ur group had please give some info.....

Hi ppl

just returned from IIM-K GD/PI at IMI,Delhi. I was assigned to panel - 3. We were 6 people in the GD group .... 3 had not turned up.
There was a sheet of paper given with a pragaraph basically about the IT boom and the growing pressure on Indian cities because of it.

the discussion was pretty lively with everyone getting a chance to speak his/ her points. There was'nt a fish market situation ( in just 6 persons ? ). It went on for about 12-15 minutes.

I was the first one for the interview and was called some 5 minutes for the interview. There were 2 persons in the panel ... very friendlyu indeed.

Here are the questions they asked ...

1. You are from mechanical engineering, what is a frost free refrigerator?
2. What are its power requirments ... more or less than a normal one ?
3. What is a Carnot engine ( IC Engines)?
4. What is a Carnot cycle?
5. What is the maximum efficiency of a Carnot cycle?
6. ( I had a elective in Operations resarch) What all have u studied in OR ?
7. What is the diffrence in transportation and transmodelling problem?
8. what is a transportation problem?
9. North west method ?
10. Hungarian method?
11. Dynamic programming?
12. Linear programming - what do we do ?
13. Queing - have u studied it ?
14. what model u use in queing?
15. what probability distribution is used?
16. is poisson's distribution continuos ?
17. OK, what hobbies do u have ?
18. ( i said reading ) what do u read?
19. What is an IPO?
20. Can u name some recenty IPO's?
21. which company is the largest in india based on its sales ?
22. what is book-building?
23. why are so many public sector industries issuing shares?
24. what are diffrent routes for disinvestment?
25. in a sale to strategic disinvestor, is an IPO needed?
26. how many times was ONGC's issue oversubscribed?
27. are you in touch with current affairs ?
28. there is a country in europe which had elections in which ruling party lost .. name it ?
29. who is new PM of Spain ?
30. why did outgoing government lose elections?
31. who are basque terrorists ... name organization ?

All in all it went OK... although i do not think i did very well in the tech part .... they just went too far in Operations and i did not remember half the things ... keeping my fingers crossed ................

this is in response to your query.
i am a commerce graduate with three years of work experience in insurance company.
the interview was very cool.
basically the question they were asking were regarding my job responsibilty and about job satisfaction, and all that crap
actually cud not figure out wat qualities they were trying to look for

as for the engineers in the group, i had most of them with work ex and so on, so sorry mate wud not be able to give u much of an idea on that

gd topic: a pice of paper with something abt similarities between globalization and belerigent hindu politics... very peaceful..i started off...and apart from one guy who spoke just once...rest of us all got chances to speak ..very peaceful gd...

now to the interview...
i enter...they ask me for the form ..i have made a mess of the knot
on the file.. finally i give them the certificates... then the senior guy gives me a sheet of paper with a human being drawn.asks me to write 5 qualities abt myself...
i write them on a different sheet....then he asks me to rate them..then he asks me what is biggest asset and biggest liability in these qualities for management..
i tell him..then he tells me i am selfish..i sadi no sir..i just put my needs in front of other's needs..gave him an example..i am hungry ..5 ppl to a chapai..ill obv try for a bigger share..


after some bhatting on this ..he gives me another sheet..(lateral thinking q's)..

it was an almost complete circle..with the word blouse written in the circle....

i tell him its got blouse written over it..and looks like one half of a blouse..

then he tells me ki i havent fiven he answer which the designer of the question had in mind..why did i ask u the question...

i told him ki u asked because u wanted to see if i cd come up with some different interpretation...

at this one guy starts saying ki but u didnt..then another guy says..he came up with something totally different...(ref to bluse i guess.. ) ..at this point all of us start smiling..


then the second guy..young asks me ki u have given graphology as a hobby..tell us something from ur traits... i tld them abt positive points.... ..then he asks me to tell some -ve points .i tell him that my knowledge is not so much..i can only catch extreme -ve traits..show him some examples of a bad writing

then he asks me u are obv very passionate abt iit ..y not do an mba from there...
pehle to i didnt hear the q...started off on y mba after iit..he corrects me ..i tell him ki bcs its not established...not very good vis-a-vis iims....


then just when i am about to leave..almost as an afterthought he asks me if i have calls from any other iim...i say yes..and tell him that except A ..i have it from all other institutes .....

pooh ! i wanted to be the 1st one to post my gd/pi@IIM-K par as they say the bar has been raised ...

Well backgrnd 1st :

Final yr engg at IIT Kharagpur

10th : 90.2
12th : 90.2
Current : 9.18/10

All students in my panel turned up...so we were divided in grrps of 8 and two gds were held...

Gd topic : With the Outsourcing boom around the corner, India is in the same state as of 3-4 decades ago when the first wave of industrialization occurred...The government needs to provide world class facilities in the cities experiencing this boom without seriously hurting the rurals who migrate to these cities in search of jobs...so suggest some measures that the government should take...*basically we weren't allowed to take the gd sheets wid us so this is juss my take of the topic *

And yeah...the gd was ulti-peaceful...no fishmarkets...none of my mock gds were so silent *if u know wat i mean*...

Now the interview : *2 panelists--one scanning my certificates the other one my data sheet*...

1. Why did u chose to do an Mtech ?
2. Many successful IITians have opened firms without doing an MBA so why not follow that route to entrepreneurship ?
3. U were in the anti-ragging squad constituted by ur institute...how were u chosen ?

That was it...and i was like ...no acads/no current affairs...well then this is life and some more i guess

hi ppl,
had K GD\PI today...delhi...panel 2....3 pm
GD---10-12 min GD,7 ppl( 2 were absent)
were given a para on a sheet regarding anti globalisation brigade and stuff.....cudnt understand clearly... infact none of us cud
GD went well.....everybody spoke....no fish market like situation....ok overall

PI---15-20 min,
focussed on acads , esp maths for other engineers wid me........
i was asked abt my branch(mine is agricultural engg)....wat we study in it.....so on....
no use posting in detail as the whole PI went abt my agril engg....
BTW in the end they asked me wud i hav prob there due to maths...do i know to operate windows,PC ......
