Re: *Counselling Sessions* for CAT2007 & other exams on Shoutbox! -
25-05-2007, 12:01 PM
shank2006 seconds Raven and adds that was the main difference in my approach when compared to cat 2004
Fabio capello: I had this doubt many time ...dont think i am kidding what is analysing
richa12: @prahalad.....any good book for geometry??
prahalad85: @richa...IMS has a book only for geometry..really good
mansoor316 seconds Raven... "Spend lot of time analysing your perfromance
Fabio capello: @ raven what is analysing i know my strengths and weakness but i am unable to over come my weakness
shank2006: @richa: even i was bad at geometry..solve arun sharma,IMS,CL and TIME
fultoo_bakar: how can one analyse english in mocks and build it as well? can an RC be improved in say 3 months. what approach should be followed after one realize that one is bad at grammer RC.
The Raven: Yes thats where the books come in
The Raven:Find specific areas and practice on them
fultoo_bakar: i tried solving many RC's but made no difference last whole year
Krishnan Sekar: @fulltoo Grammar and RC are 2 diff things
The Raven: Understand why you are not able to solve
fultoo_bakar: beacuse for a average reader RC is boring and minds just turns off seeing a km long passage
Krishnan Sekar: Even for people who feel that their grammar skills are not upto the mark, RC comes in handy..
Krishnan Sekar: A gud reading speed helps though
Fabio capello: @ prahalad can you please brief what is analyzing now its all more logical than speed and accuracy
The Raven: Thats why I was suggesting the Buznan books
prahalad85: @fultoo...RC passages r deliberately made boring..sorry no choice..u have to go thru
Krishnan Sekar: There r some RCs which are actually easy...which hav fact based questions...Try and pick them, though the CAT is moving away from direct qustions...
prahalad85: @fabio:these DI caselets of late have been made logical oriented in these mocks...say u have 7 of these in a paper...u may solve 3 fully and half of another 1 or 2...
prahalad85:u still have to find out how to do the rest....thats where analyzing helps..domnt c the solutions..take ur own time at home and try doing it..use the solutions as a last resort
Fabio capello: @ prahald how are you analysing things
orca:hey folks !! mock analysis mein first thing to do is try n estimate how much you expect to score before u correct the paper
Obsessed_bout_mba: get hold of how to read better and faster by Norman Lewis.it will help in learning some speed reading techniques n other stuffs required for RC
prahalad85: @fabio:in RCs i agree its very tuff to get back to them later
Obsessed_bout_mba: but we need to read it and do a hell a lot of practice
orca:over a period of 4-5 mocks you start seeing trends
Krishnan Sekar:I used to get back to the RCs normally..Just to double check for some Qs...It does help..
The Raven: And after where the key is the why part
Obsessed_bout_mba: @krish...it happens for diff RCs...read the passage ASAP then for answerin questions we can get back to the passage
orca: in QA after a mock, count the number of Q's u tried, then the number of Q's u actually marked
The Raven: I tried answering the qns by guessing and then started reading
The Raven: in RCs
orca:I can bet my right hand that those weak at QA end up trying > 20 Q's every mock yet clock very few attempts
The Raven: But not sure if it will work for everyone
Obsessed_bout_mba: will practising a lot of RC help in solvin RC
prahalad85: yeah this year RC passages in CAT were very vague and all choices looked correct
Krishnan Sekar:I wud advise against practising too much... In eng the more you think the more ur chances of going wrong... Mostly, ur first choice turns out to be rite...
prahalad85: practicing a lot wont hurt but i wud recommend that one finishes the VA part and then do a few passages rather than cramming in all the RCs...cause theres always a vagueness abt them
prahalad85: thats my personal opinion
The Raven: RCs are always a risk
Krishnan Sekar: Completely agree with Prahalad...Verbal gives u more marks in less time..
..
..

Obsessed_bout_mba: will that help i the long run or that will only make me stayin the same position
Krishnan Sekar: Time saved can be used for RCs as they take a lil more time...
The Raven: In 2005, even diffrent coaching institutes answers were not agreeing for the RCs
Krishnan Sekar: @Raven.. The risk kicks in when they start asking what the author thinks:(
prahalad85: i wud suggest u ppl take a look at the RC passages of CAT 2006..u will realize that even if u take a lot of time iu can never b sure of them
prahalad85: atleast topics like fill ups and parajumbles r better that way
Krishnan Sekar: Parajumbles are also a lil dicey...
The Raven: One of the best things I did in 2005 was to leave the infamous Derida passage
prahalad85: nmat no sectional..so forget ur wek section and just crack the rest
Krishnan Sekar: CAT is more of application rather than direct questions...
Krishnan Sekar: @Raven... I got that one rite... Helped me a lot
Obsessed_bout_mba: so more than practise we need to develop a rapport with all diff kinda topics, ok can someone summarize how to improve RC skills
fultoo_bakar: but about prep english for jmet? is it the same?
prahalad85: XAT has becum tuff thanks to this successive negative scheme...
prahalad85:u cannot attempt too many there...so u will need a strategy change
prahalad85:preparation wise nothing new to b done...CAT prep is more than enuf
The Raven:FMS is a speed test
fultoo_bakar: did you guys learn the additional syllabus for jmet? does it help considering that you cannot be master in 1 month.
The Raven:CAT and FMS need diffrent mentalities
Obsessed_bout_mba: can someone summarize for the newcomers..tips for RC
gogetter.gary: /hi all.. gary here.. can nebdy give some advise bout DI.. dats my achille's heel :(
The Raven:@gog - What in DI - LR, AR, Data intesnive?
Krishnan Sekar: @gogetter Go for the data intensive Qs first. They mite take time but there is no way u can go wrong
prahalad85: @ all:seeing the CAT 06 model the coaching institutes may make Matha nd DI easier in the mocks and verbal really tuff...dont get carried away by that..the IIMs outsmart these institutes each time
shank2006: @fultoo: the beauty of cat is tht if u prepare for cat , u can attempt all the b-school entrances without any extra preps
Krishnan Sekar: Agree prahalad.. They always happen to have an ace up teir sleeve...
gogetter.gary: @krishnan data intensive q as in containing graphs n bars n stuff?
Krishnan Sekar:And make sure that ur preparation is such that u r not affected by the pattern changes..
The Raven:But the data intesnive ones don't come these dayy, right?
Krishnan Sekar: no, the ones with numbers and tables...where u dont have to judge things...
gogetter.gary: ya thats 3wat i was thking..its more of reasoning in dii now..
Krishnan Sekar:After that come the graphs...
Krishnan Sekar: Thats the way I used to do it...
The Raven: So it has not been there since 2002
The Raven: I feel they are gone for good
Krishnan Sekar: U had to work out questions
prahalad85: try the sudoku if u have time...say in office
gogetter.gary: ya.. can u suggest a gud puzzle buk that helps in building up reasonoing?
The Raven:See for reasoning you can alassify problems into 4-5 basic types
MG_1806: @krishnan-I read in your blog that in RC you faced situation where it seems more than one option is correct. How you tackled the problem?
Krishnan Sekar: DI is one section where solving papers will def help.. More the type pf problems u practise, the better u will get at approaching them...
The Raven: And there is a method for each basic type
gogetter.gary: think without ink.. okie? isnt that for faster calculations rather than reasoning?
Krishnan Sekar: @MG: That happened in CAT 2006, which was an exception... It normally does not happen that way.
DesiGuru: i think the DI is a natural thing... there are enough practice problems by TIME IMS etc
MG_1806: @krishnan-My question was how did you answered those questions? What was the stategy?
DesiGuru: the math for some simple folks can improve slightly by books like Think without ink
Krishnan Sekar: Gut feeling in that paper atleast... There was no oter way of doing it...
DesiGuru: In DI from atleast 2005... the key is to not get overexcited and solve a little calmly
Krishnan Sekar: Otherwise, u will find that it boils down to 2 choices and u have to take a call...
MG_1806: @krishnan-Gut feeling.and how many questions you attempted with that gut feeling?
Krishnan Sekar: All this time ) But as I said it is not that bad usually....U shud be able to identify the rite answer straightaway
prahalad85: use the CAT 05 DI section for practice..good compilation of caselets
Krishnan Sekar: My approach i a normal paper is as follows: Verbal first,RCs next..
mansoor316: time has the best mocks for DI. get copies of those from friends if u havent joined its test series
Krishnan Sekar: Used to be gud at parajumbles at one point, but I seem to have lost that ability now
DesiGuru: @CAT My general advice is not to overstudy... weekly mocks and at home analysis... + Read interesting books...
prahalad85:and IMS had a free simcat last time...the most innovative paper ever ..ppl who took it wud know
Krishnan Sekar:TIME also had the most varied type of mocks last year.. They covered almost every possible situation...
Krishnan Sekar: @Prahalad: Yes, that was a great paper.. and it had a huge sample size...
The Raven: CL was most varied in 2005
prahalad85:and read the bulletin carefully..last yr they mentioned that CAT wud have only 3 sections ...so that was one suprise less
Fabio capello: @ prahald is it advisable to take cl
prahalad85: @fabio:i wud recommend TIME...probablytake the CL papers from ur friends and take a look
Krishnan Sekar: @Fabio : CL normally leans towards the tougher side... Above what u will actually face in the CAT
The Raven: @ Sekar - CL was tough in intelligent way. IMS in a brute way
-----
..
END!

Hi Mahip,
I am preparing for CAT 07 and Quants my weak section. So i have decided to start from the start, picking one chapter each week and doing it thoroughly. So i kinda need the basic fundas for almost all chapters of Quant, the basic theory, formulae, shortcut associated with a particular chapter, anything. I have searched the threads but there are threads on discussion of questions of a particular chapter but nowhere fundas are discussed. Ans seeing your prominence, i would be really doubly grateful to you if u could help me with this. Really expecting from u.
