Problem In Getting Admission In Iim's Due To 4 Year Work Experience -
09-05-2007, 09:17 PM
Hi Friends,
This is my first post at PG.
And your reply to my post would assist me in my decision to make up my mind for CAT or GMAT
Friends, does any problem arise in getting admission at IIM's due to more than 3 year work experience. I contacted the counsellor at IMS today, and was advised to go for GMAT,as my chances for CAT are scarce due to 3+ years of work experience.
I personally am interested in CAT,and haven't ever appeared for it.
Hope you guys would suggest me and guide me based on your experience or asking your friends who already got calls from IIM's
regards,
Ravi Agnihotri

Hi Ravi,
I don't think having 3+ years of work ex is bad for CAT. There cud be no problem arising out of this fact. Yes, you need to prepare well for the CAT and it is slightly tougher for ppl with significant work ex. I say it is slightly tougher, coz more the work-ex, more is expected out of you in office. This will lead to a time crunch in your preparations. But the same is true for GMAT too.
Once u get calls from IIMs, you might be asked in interview as to why you want to leave your present job and come to IIMs. Defending that is left to you. If you are clear about the reasons as to why you want to take up CAT or join a B-School, you can mention it to them.
As far as ppl being rejected cause of excess work-ex.... i am sorry, i haven't heard of any such case. I myself have close to 3 yrs of work-ex. There are a few good friends of mine here on PG itself who have more than 5 yrs of work ex and who have cracked CAT and have joined/ joining a B-School.
As a matter of fact, i think i read in the newspaper that a person in the outgoing batch from IIMB has 11+ yrs of exp and he was given the post of a VP.
If i am not wrong, i think there will be at least one person in every B-School with more than 5+ yrs of exp. Actually it is good to join a B-School after a few yrs of work-ex (personal opinion of mine)
So, having significant work-ex shouldn't matter

Hey dear...
I am in the same boat as u are...my wrk ex is 4+ n i will attempt CAT for the frst time...i have joined TIME in Delhi.
now comng to the point...this kind of a reaction from some IMS counseler is not expected..if u want to give CAT than definately wrk exp wont be a hurdle...infact it ll be advantageous..n some colleges like symbi gives prefernces to wrk ex guys...so dnt feel low n give it ur best..
tc!!

This is very strange reply from your IMS counslr.. you have nearly 4 years of work x, you can do MBA from IIMs, work x won't b an obstacle in that.. i personly know several ppl who have work x of more than 5 years n are presently studying in IIMs and some are preparing for CAT'07 also.. it would b beneficial for you if you step into an IIM with this much of work x.. don't care a hang over conslr's advice.. i personaly recomend you to go for both.. better you would choose.. you must b knowing about the profile of the ppl ( IIM students ) who are getting massive packages & good designations, highest salaries in IIMs batch, are all having work x of more than 5 years, none of the ppl having 1-3 years of work x got huge salaries n good positions.. you have edge over other ppl because of your work x..
all the best dude for CAT'07..

Dude,
Me too has nearing 3 yrs of work ex - Took CAT for the second time this yr - Secured 97.1%ile - Got an MDI PGP IM call, confirmed it - And did not join.
Was with IMS last yr, and am pally with most of the counsellors and never I have heard that 3-4 yrs work ex guys are at an disadvantage when it comes to admissions in IIMs... Ppl with 4 yrs of work ex do go into so called lesser B-Schools (By lesser I mean, less in stature to IIMs) like SJSOM, IIFT, SPJ etc....
GMAT and CAT are two different things, where the former relies heavily on work ex. I have frnds with 4 yrs and 5 yrs who'll join IIMB and IIMC this yr - All working in Software..
Moreover, for GMAT - average yrs of experience for proper return is ideally 5 yrs.
All d best for CAT 07 and GMAT (if u r takin it).
Cheers,
Bipul

Well for once - lemme tell u IMS ppl have given a crap suggestion. DO u know the number of freshers taken by IIMA this time .... Less than 50 for sure out of 180 .... IIMB toh didnt even give many freshers a call. I think u can leverage ur workex in PIs to ur advantage if u put it well Only IIMC gave calls to many , but then IIMC has a larger number of seats as well - 240+60. But in general the percentage of freshers is on the decline.
But boss , first crack CAT , All the Best.

Hi I myself has about 5 years of experiance at present. I fully agree with PGites views. Definately workex gives you egde, but at the same you are expected to perform in GDPI.
The only concern for a workex candidate is how he convince the panel that why he wants to leave a good job and join Bschool. Otherwise workex is always am asset.
