Pune univ implements OBC quota
Pune: Even as IITs and IIMs continue debating the implementation of 27 per cent quota for OBCs, a private university in Pune has already decided to take the plunge.
The Symbiosis deemed university's decision to voluntarily implement 27 percent OBC quota comes as a relief to many OBC students.
Arshad Hussain is one of them. A business studies aspirant, Hussain came to Pune all the way from Jharkhand to submit his OBC certificate at the Symbiosis Institute of Business Management.
"I am an OBC candidate. I missed SNAP scorecard by few marks. It was very disappointing for me because it was my dream to get admission became difficult for me to get admission in a Symbiosis institute. Since the institute has taken initiative to give admission to OBC, now we can think again of getting admission here," he says.
Th university has more plans up its sleeve. Fifteen institutions under the University will set aside more seats for OBCs. This year alone, the seats will be increased by seven percent.
But the good news is that General Category students will not be affected.
The University will create more seats to accommodate more OBC students.
Symbiosis intends to upgrade infrastructure gradually in the coming years to achieve the 27 per cent quota target.
"If we have to look at subsidised fee structures then we have to look at different financial fees model as of now the OBC students pay as much as the general merit students. Government should come forward and help to institutes like us,” says Joint director of Symbiosis Society Vidya Yeravdekar.
Private institutions have clearly shown their support to include the OBC quota.
But many feel the mainstreaming of the OBC students is incomplete till the industry comes forward to employ these students.
