Why are you writing CAT? -
16-03-2007, 12:50 AM
Time for a serious thread for my side! Hell, am opening it in chit chat - its the safest place for any thread Mirchi Mod -Let this stay here or move it to some other section or close it
CAT 2006 was my first attempt at CAT and probably the last ( Note my use of probably- I might write it again ) and my question is aimed at the junta which keeps writing CAT again and again, year upon year for the elusive IIM tag.
1. Why, in spite of regular paying and well paying jobs, do you look for other avenues?
2. Why do you just aim for an MBA? Is it for the value add to your CV, is it for the hefty pay packages or is it because you are genuinely interested in MBA? ( No politically correct answers)
3. If you are genuinely interested, how or why?
4. What kind of difference will an MBA make to your life? :tellme:
5. Are there people here, who feel passionately about something but have opted for MBA only for the moolah aspect of it? Why? :dontgeti:
6. If you are bored in your current job, why do you think an MBA will give you a change? Every job gets monotonous after some time right?
7. Of course every year IIMs offer a chunk of students to I-Banks for placements the world over, why will you leave the host of opportunities here and move? Is it only because 'phoren' has always fascinated the average Indian?
8. Even if you get the kind of job you always wanted at a good salary after completing your graduation, would you still do an MBA? Just for the sake of having a post graduate tag? :sleepy: ??:
9. And finally, why will you write CAT 2007 even after a miserable performance in CAT 2006?
There! My questions are over! Feel free to groan cos am expecting them but I hope to get an answer
Guess who's back?

i can speak for most of the IT engg at least i guess...
typical IT engg realizes sumwhr down the line either of these things..
1. he sux at coding nd stuff..nd the job he will get will newaz be "excrutiatingly boring.."
2. if he is frm a second rung coll. he wud get a nt so gud job..salary wise and newaz the job wud be "excrutiatingly boring.."
3. he wud hv to sit in front of the terminal for hours starin at some piece of code which again wud be "excrutiatingly boring.."
also after three years of painful programing..he realizes tht doin simple maths in limited time can be interesting..:P
MBA grads are supposed to be smart people...so they hv a chance to remove the dorky engg label..:P
nd ahh i almost forgot...he wud get a kick ass salary if he gets into the top 10 colleges..

OMG! Thanks for replying people!
Vijay- No man! Its not restricted to people writing CAT 07. As I know you are a CAT veteran, so just tell us why you wrote it the number of times that you did
Evergreen - Coming to the IT engineer..well you would have taken up computer engineering (am assuming all IT engineers are computer engineers or BCAs etc etc) because at that point of time it would have been hot right? Of course, you look at the different opportunities that the world offers once you grow big enough to think for yourself..but why do you think an MBA is necessarily smart and why does only MBA give you a ticket away from 'excruciating boredom'? Why not something else?
Has anyone thought of venturing into something else - which subscribed to your intellectual tastebuds but didn't do it because MBA is the tried, tested and safe option?
Guess who's back?

Well if I had the option to vote for more than 1 choice, then it would’ve been 1st and the last
Since you have explicitly mentioned that this is for the junta who (love) repeating CAT , Im taking the liberty of answering a few of the questions , having been a 2 attempt veteran myself
Quote:
|
1. Why, in spite of regular paying and well paying jobs, do you look for other avenues?
|
*Regular paying* *well paying* et al are highly relative terms
Anyways to answer your question, Yes I will, depending on my interests and the opportunities available at that point of time in my life.
I always try to look at a few things on an absolute scale
Quote:
|
2. Why do you just aim for an MBA? Is it for the value add to your CV, is it for the hefty pay packages or is it because you are genuinely interested in MBA? ( No politically correct answers)
|
By looking at the poll one should get a fair idea of why MBA (and IIM particularly)
Anyways lemme say that Im genuinely interested in MBA (Whatevr its supposed to mean )
Quote:
3. If you are genuinely interested, how or why?
|
You want the usual mugged up answers or want some honest opinions
I’ll try to be as honest as possible Im interested in a career in Finance and Markets. Now being an engineer, what better way to make a career in that area, than graduating from IIMs
Quote:
|
4. What kind of difference will an MBA make to your life? :tellme:
|
Now I prefer to answer this question after I’ve done my MBA and worked for a coupla years
Quote:
5. Are there people here, who feel passionately about something but have opted for MBA only for the moolah aspect of it? Why? :dontgeti:
|
This is for those ppl, who’ve opted for an MBA only for the moolah factor, to answer. Not my category
Quote:
6. If you are bored in your current job, why do you think an MBA will give you a change? Every job gets monotonous after some time right?
|
This helps in my case if I finally get into the financial markets. I’ll burn out by 35 or 40, hence take a retirement
Quote:
|
8. Even if you get the kind of job you always wanted at a good salary after completing your graduation, would you still do an MBA? Just for the sake of having a post graduate tag? :sleepy:
|
Not applicable in my case..becos of my interest again. But taking a hypothetical case. Suppose I had a passion for architecture (like Roark and his brilliance) and money to pursue it, then CAT for me would be just another small domesticated carnivorous species
Now *miserable* is agn a relative word. Would you consider a performance of high 97% with a 70 in VA , a miserable performance, cos I do.
On serious note, if you really think that U have the necessary attitude and aptitude(For this, one must know her/himself in and out...bah Im getting philosophical here ) for something which you want to pursue, you just go for it putting your everything into it.
For some it takes some time , and for some it’s a piece of cake. I belong to the former category and that’s precisely why Im writing CAT 2007 after 2 attempts
Good Luck
