see the point is, at the end of the day an MBA from insti like IIMS does give you that confidence...(at least i think so..seniors may be can answer that better)..so even if ur ideas were in your head long before you get that extra belief in urself after passing out...also u cannot deny that ur knowledge level doesnt increase after a mba degree...
and i dun agree that people hu strted their own venture after an MBA "wasted" their degree...i think those two years were the catalyst that showed them the possibilities..and i am not talkin about the curriculum...its the whole experience...interaction with people etc...

CAT 2006 was my first attempt at CAT and probably the last ( Note my use of probably- I might write it again ) and my question is aimed at the junta which keeps writing CAT again and again, year upon year for the elusive IIM tag.

1. Why, in spite of regular paying and well paying jobs, do you look for other avenues?

2. Why do you just aim for an MBA? Is it for the value add to your CV, is it for the hefty pay packages or is it because you are genuinely interested in MBA? ( No politically correct answers)

3. If you are genuinely interested, how or why?

4. What kind of difference will an MBA make to your life? :tellme:

5. Are there people here, who feel passionately about something but have opted for MBA only for the moolah aspect of it? Why? :dontgeti:

6. If you are bored in your current job, why do you think an MBA will give you a change? Every job gets monotonous after some time right?

7. Of course every year IIMs offer a chunk of students to I-Banks for placements the world over, why will you leave the host of opportunities here and move? Is it only because 'phoren' has always fascinated the average Indian?

8. Even if you get the kind of job you always wanted at a good salary after completing your graduation, would you still do an MBA? Just for the sake of having a post graduate tag? :sleepy: ??:

9. And finally, why will you write CAT 2007 even after a miserable performance in CAT 2006?

There! My questions are over! Feel free to groan cos am expecting them but I hope to get an answer
well,

1.The first question is N.A for me.

2. As a Chemical engineer (b.Tech) the options available are
M.Tech,Civil Services,Wirte GRE and do ur Phd also in states,
work in a FMCG/IT write some certification of ur wish etc.. and of course
can do MBA,else do CA/ICWA .
Any soul in this earth wants growth! (from ant to elephant),
After 4 yrs of education u can become Engineer and after another
6 yrs of exp u can become Manager rarther u can grow to manager.
But if i do another 2 yrs of education(with proper understanding) and if i can become a manager y i shouldnt give a try?..

3. Yes (also).I knew what is HLL? what it produces, and how?.I also wanted to
know how does HLL work.(Bottomline:How is a company managed?can i know the know how?)

4. Remove 3rd option and if its not present what is my life. Now add it and see
how would i be?

5. sorry i dont know

6. Right every job gets monotonous,Even CEO can become bored.
But the degree of Boredom is important.Even watchman gets bored
and so is the Java Programer. But diff is huge?

7. IIM's also send students to Indian CO's and yes, major chunk goes to
Indian Co's.Not only to I-Banks i supppose. It's not about feeling desi..
Even one goes to Wall Street after IIM MBA it doesnt harm him and India?
But he shd come back after certain period and do the needful to our CO's.

8. Interlinked with questn 6.After getting bored he wanted to try something and
he would hav seen pagalguy.com so he is doing it? though there is no compulsion
of doing it>Here i agree that IIM's r given a hype as Cricket stiil i feel that they deserve it?

9>If i fail miserably in CAT'06 it doesnt mean that i'd fail with decen score in Cat'07
and clear CAt'08 wtih Extra average manner and CAT'09 with all IIM Calls.
I could hav cleared CAT'06 had i written on Nov20th.Who knows?
Most importantly its the prep u put.I expect i can put 100% eff and i can clear CAT'07.

By the way dude really that was thought provoking questions and i felt like attneding
a PI.Thax for such questions.U deseerve a thanks from all of bskool students and aspirants..

I agree here! The market does recognize graduate talent ( look at me! ). Am in no hurry to complete my post grad-although my folks are

But anyway, after completing graduation don't be in a hurry to get into something your friend said or your cousin is doing - take time to figure things out yourself and realize what you want to do

Re: Why are you writing CAT 2007? :| - 18-03-2007, 04:25 PM

so why MBA? I hv lied enuf for my lifetime when faced with this inane question in the interviews over the past month... so here is an outlet 2 the real reason! b'cz i hv been passionate abt it since i was 15! its not the money (i will join a BPO for that), its not the tag (i could hv joined LSE for my masters in eco), its not that am dying 2 join the I-Bank brigade! for most ppl MBA is a means to an end (as it should be), the end being a satisfactory career, for me an MBA from a "top-rung" Bschool is the end in itself! do i see myself as a CEO of an org in 10 yrs? definitely not! then y am i wasting so much money in applying for and finally pursuing that course? bcz like a besotted teenager (and am 23) i am seduced by it! so what do i want to do? i want to be an author, teach underprivileged kids (and it's not social responsiblity sh** that we talk at interviews) and may be come out with my youth magazine- none of which requires an MBA degree per se. but MBA becomes a safe option which will allow u to sustain urself with self-respect in case what u want to do doesn't work out! thats y we have ppl like gayatri ganjawalla (singer who did her MBA from IIML), a Harsha Bhogle, and my ex boyfriend who passed out from IIMC and then quit his "phoren" job to take care of funding for NGOs.
I took CAT in 2004, didn't convert the two calls I had. again took CAT in 2006, did worse, but somehow the other exams worked out and I hv joined a decent institute this yr. but i will keep taking CAT for the next few yrs just for the heck of it: call it an obsession!

Thanks for such honest answers Shimonti! I agree that MBA from a premier institute is something with which you can sustain yourself even after your luck at entrepreneurship fails - you can get a job with that degree of yours.

It is actually the safe way out, even though all else fails your degree will help you

You dont have have a WHY right...then let us put it this way...''If not MBA...THEN WHAT ELSE''...If you have the guts to go out and try something as kick ass as struggling in the film industry or setting up a chicken farm it ok, otherwise MBA is the closest you will get to a chance of a decent life...at least here in India

I don't know exactly why i will write CAt -07 because i have already dropped a year and failed miserably to secure decent %iles.Still i don't want to take admission in a C grade B-school.We do MBA once in our life and institute matters a great deal.so should i drop again?don't know. How much will 2yr gap affect my chances of getting into a good B-school.

Re: Why are you writing CAT 2007? :| - 23-04-2007, 06:51 AM

this may sound complex but this is a fact

most ppl r giving CAT2007 cause they could not kill CAT2006.
most ppl r giving CAT2006 cause they could not kill CAT2005.
.
.
.
.
and so it goes till the time when they first gave CAT
and 90% guys first gave CAT for reasons which are irrelevant now or are outright stupid

how many of you buy this hypothesis???

(here is the reason of an IT coolie as to why he is giving CAT - he says that his job sucks - this being the case when he did his engg from a premier institute - what is the guarentee that his job after IIMA wont suck - the point is that guys give CAT just because it stretches them to the limit )

PS- these were Elusionist's thoughts when he was suffering from a particularly bad spell of Monday Blues.
