Dude, write proper and legible English first. This is discussion forum, not a SMSing forum. Don't mods frown upon these kind of postings?

Re: NITIE GD/PI Experiences 2007 - 16-03-2007, 12:55 PM

Hi Folks,
Came back today from NITIE.
I Had my GD/PI on 15-03-07. Batch: 49/A/1.

************************************************** ************
Cat: 98.39%ile
work-ex: 35Months (S/w)
Sports: State Level ( But was never asked):satisfie:
Extra Curricular: Decent ( But was never asked, read more to know abt this):satisfie:

************************************************** ************
Stayed at NTIE hostel:

Imagination of a hostel in a B-school: I expect rooms would be fullly air conditioned with internet connectivity to all rooms.

Reality Check: Well I got acco in PGP 3&4 hostel n basement. The condition of room n the wing was in very derelict state that I thought to contribute to make them livable. The rooms are age old, to descibe in modest way. Washroom gives u a good reminder of indian railway 2nd class compartment expcet the graffity missing..
I even took some pics of all these historic monuments.

The rooms were so old as it looks like no body has come here after Britishers left.
It gives u a good sense waht is the differenc between a Govt and a private college and why privatisation is needed. ...

Went straight away to buy Mosquito repelent to fight a night battle which eventually I lost as they won by keeping me awake whole night be playing aroud me.

I was wondering how seniors are managing there? if It all they are living in these hostels (although I doubt) and also that these govt. hostels need lot of money. But at the end what matters is career which Iam pretty sure NITIE Rocks!!!
But being a consumer had to descibe waht i saw, thats it!

Food was quite ok! No complains. Seniors were very helpful. Thanks to them.

GD Description:

GD Topic: Organised retail will destroy the small shop keepers

Before even start of GD, one gentleman "Bhaisaahab" was more than eager to meet all ppl so I got a hunch that he has some nasty plans as he is just roaring to go but has no idea that he will go to that extent. Anyways.. it was a omen for things to come...

GD timing : 3 minutes to think..Bell will ring...18 minutes for discussion..bell will ring..2 mins to summarize..end of GD.

After 3 minutes as soon as the bell rang the same "Bhaisaahab' started from the top of his voice and in all the hurry without even opening the topic to the group and also jumped ot his views and was speaking on and on..
suddently his neighbour a decent chap took the charge and game some decent start with some gyan on topic.. Overall he spoke quite well in GD but spoke too much not gave enough chance to all. But was the best of lot.

I tried to jump to give some stats on the current rules ans regulation in India abt retail but was cut down n then almost every body started speaking jumping to staright away Wallmart etc( I could sense ppl were just hiding this word and was looking to speak this word "wallmart" as soon as thet could)
So by GODS (sitting in GD) grace we entered in a complete fish market where all crap was being discussed even GDP growth which I thought was a bit tangent ..still...
the same "Bhaisaab" even asked one very intelligent q to all " How many of us go to Big Baazaar??" I guess hardly any""
" I wanted to reply to him but thought not to waste my time for this sily thing

Amidst all this I knew I have to give only 3-4 SOLID entires but as we all know nothing happens as per plan..so in my case I realize the ppl are not ready even to give me a minute to put my point across,. I tried very hard to enter in this mayhem but every time ended in "Excuse me, let me complete" Still somehow manage to raise 2 good points in GD on which there was atleast some discussion.

all in all very very Bad GD as per my opinion. No rules, no manners simply blood bath..

as soon as the time ended the panel asked to sum up but there also every body started giving his version. Even I fall in this trap.

One poor chap was so scared of all this that he not even mumbled a single word. I could undersrand his position.:(

but even after all this one lady in Panel said" we enjoyed the discussion and that's y we gave u one extra minute" not sure if she was ridiculing...

here also that "bhaisaaahab" said "No ma'm actually we got emotional so it has to be like this" ...Gawd damn it...

GD end....................

************************************************** ************
PI: Here is brief abt my " brief" PI which came after a long hiatus of close to 5 hours of wait..

was getting signals that work ex peole were asked a lot and PI is cool..

so was pensive but then here is mine rendezvous with NITIE..

I heard that there is one prof of Quailty n he is asking abt quality since I have good knowledge of 6 sigma so felt a bit confident but was of no use...discussion was very abstract.

Panel of 4 profs... ( 1 quality prof P1, 1 fin prof P2, 1 oerations prof P3, 1 no idea P4)
I : Me

Entered in the room...
Greeetings exchanged ..

P3: Come in mr..xxx. Please take the seat
I: Thank you sir,
p1: So what is the meaning of ur name?
I: answered
p1: Explain in Hindi
I: Answered in Hindi but now I think was it right to speak in Hindi , but sicne they asked specifically so I didnt have much choice.

P3: So u have 2.5 years work ex
I: sir, I will complete my 3 years next month.
p2: How much is your salary?
I : Answered

I: Said it varies due to variable components.
P3: Waht are those?
I: Expalined.
P2: So waht is the highest salary u ever got? with a huge grin
I: said last month
P3: y? is it because of tax clearace?
I : yes sir.
p2: When is your sal going to increase?
I: told that we just finised our appraisal cycle.
P3: Tell me howz this compensation decided in ur proj?
I: told him abt CRR stuff in comp?
P2: So is it kind of leg pulling amonst ur peers for this?
I: Told them abt healthy competition etc....

Are bhai Band karo ye salary waala interview ask sth abt me yar!

p3: What is the attrition rate of your comp? comapre with Wipro

Thank God atleast some change in Qs either wise I was wondering why so many q on salary?????

I: Told
P3: What is ur HR doing to stop especially for those who r going for higher studies?
I: I said they are not doing much because they encourage ppl to go for hige studies.
P3: So if they want to do what should they do?
I: Gave some details
P1: So if a company has a attrition rate of zero is it good or bad?
I: I said it is not possible.
P1: I am telling u there is one such comp, so what's ur take is it good or bad?
I: I said its not good for company, although couldnt expalin properly
P1: What should be the ideal attrition rate in any company?
I: Sorry sir, no idea.
P3: What all calls u have?
I: told..
P3: Why not IIMs?
I: told.
P3: wahts ur preference between MDI and NITIE?
I: gave some fundas abt mumbai advantage and students community.
P1: dont u think these live projects and field work are distractions?
I: explained him..hell lot of gyan on this.. was nodding was quite convinsed said..quite true 2-3 times.

P3: Ok thank you XXxx
I: thank you sirs.

P1: Good day xxx
I: Good day sirs.

Overall 10 mins!! thats all

Oh Gawd! Gimme abreak is this a inteview abt me or my salary.. please yar band karo ye torture.. ask some thing relative..

No Intro, No MBA qs. NO acads, no extra curricualr . I have good exta curricalur so wanted to tell them but not even a single qs on that.. buh.. buh..:( :( :(

I don't know what to read out of this whole PI as it was nothing abt me specific where I could demonstate my edge! not sure how they are going to asses me out of this where there were not even a single q to check my comptency..

Sab moh maayaa hai bhaiya.. In my final analsis I feel Luck factor is the most important factor to get success.

so lets c If I am lucky here!!

C yao!

Best of Luck to others!

Come on dude, get over it. You go to any other moderated forum and you will realize that such controls are always there. SMS language does not make for easy reading, especially long posts and if you want to contribute to this thread, might as well make it easy for others to read your post. Basic etiquettes.

Now back to topic...

Hmm... reading this thread makes me nostalgic about my NITIE_GD/PI!
Chill everyone! It seems that very few PG's had NITIE calls (or very few bothered to post their experiences).
Anyway! Best of Luck to everyone.
By the way, the NITIE results come out very soon. Last year the final list came out 5-6 days after the last day of GD/PI's.

Hoping to see all of you in NITIE!

PS: By the way, you guys won't be accomodated in Hostel 3-4, mostly you guys will get the new hostel (H-5).

Re: NITIE GD/PI Experiences 2007 - 17-03-2007, 07:29 PM

Overall:
Was called at 8:00 am in the morning.. Had a terrible time in waking up at 5:00 am and then dozing off to sleep and then waking up at 6:00... Had to travel from vidyavihar (mum) to NITIE by local.. wasnt very pleasing journey.. So an advice.. stay in NITIE hostels... though there would be a few mosquitos... but you can take the pains for the sake of a convert..
Reached NITIE at 7:30 and there was no one for guidance. Asked a watchman about the venue and he asked me to climb up some 70 (approx) steps towards excellence.. Thats what they call the staircase.. It appeared to be a climb towards Vaishno Devi at those early hours.. Then no one.. Asked a fella cleaning the floor about the venue.. He asked me to go straight, then left, then right, then another left and finally go upstairs.. ( ).. There were a few posters stuck on the wall.. "Syndicate this way -->" .... I thought it to be the place where our interviews and GD would take place.. and yes i was right.. There were 20-30 guys (2-3 girls as well.. ) waiting in front of an audi.. Later the crowd swelled to something like 200s and we were asked to form a line.. Thats where i started cursing the indian population.. A girl's father started talking to me and he was such a funny man (not bcos his daughter was cute:satisfie: ) that i forgot that a line was forming.. And when i realized that, it was already a long serpentine line.. I stood at the back of it and after 15 min my chance came.. There was a help desk and they asked me to show my call letter.. which I did..Then i was asked to sit in the audi.. It was nice.. with nice ppl sitting everywhere.. (i could have said that atleast till the time of GD ) Audi was small.. Crowd was bigger in size. Few kept standing.. I was fortunate enough to occupy a seat..

Presentation Time:: Started with an awsome flash presentation.. followed by individual presentations for the various course. PGDIM, PGDITM...

I was hungry by now.. The audi was hot.. ACs had stopped working, it seemed.. But NITIE is not to be blamed for that.. There were so many students who had requested a rescheduling that it was overcrowded..
We had a break then.. Breakfast time.. You could have got everything for Rs 15 from a one table stall catering to 200 odd guys.. . I stuffed some idlis in my mouth and went back to the audi.. A movie was being aired.. How (Or was it When) I met your mom.. It was pure fun.. I was enjoying it when a call stopped me from my share of fun.. Call to show my certificates to NITIE officials and get them verified.. I was back to my coll admission days.. There were 50 or so aspirants sitting in a hot room with babus and volunteers in front checking the certificates.. I was called after half an hour.. I could get an experience certificate. So brought 15 page photocopy of the offer letter and the last pay slip.. The babu wasn't a soft spoken person.. Infact very rude.. He asked me to show my experience certificate. .I handed over to him the whole 15 page bundle of offer letter and asked him if he wanted the main page or all the pages.. He replied.. "Jo bhi doge, le lenge..nahin to nahin lenge". I thought if I'd have given a a bundle of old newspaper, he would have even taken that...Anyways.. Happens sometimes..

I had applied for PGDITM. In our 10 aspirants group only 7 had turned up so 3 from some other group (PGDIM) were clubbed with us. We were given serial numbers and asked to stand in a line in front of a room.. Hey man !! wat was that!! After so much of a waiting in a room for quarter to an hour, we were standing like kids trying to get an admission to a school.. They could have arranged for some chairs.. There was another group waiting when we came and then they went in for discussion and we had to stand for whatever time they took to complete the GD..

After sometime .. inside GD room.. 4-5 panelists sitting.. They welcome us. 10 chairs in a semi circle.. some notebooks on a table in the middle.. A girl from the grp picks up a sheet of paper on which the topic was written.. "How effective are Indian B Schools"..

Wow!! jotted down a few points and started waiting for the bell to ring..

It rang and two trains Shatabdi (me) and Rajdhani (another in the grp) shot off and ran parallely for some seconds when Shatabdi stopped.. Raj introduced the topic and Shat (me) followed up..

Overall the discussion was good.. Everyone chipped in with some points..

Another bell rang and we were asked to summarize...

It was another GD round.. when 3 guys summed up the GD and threw in some novel ideas of their own.. Pretty bad..

Another person who had kept quiet for most of the time was asked if he had some gyan on this.. He summarized the whole GD in a far better way..

That was the end of it..

We came out and were asked to sit in a room..

Inderjeet (Please maf karo me, if im wrong with the name) from PGDITM batch was there handling all the queries..It appeared to be a dialouge at times.. but he answered all the queries and was very informative..

It was around 1:00 pm when i was called for PI..

And guess who was there.. The Director of NITIE in the panel

5 panelists.. and a chair far removed from them in the center of a huge room.. I have a loud voice and it was here when i heard for the very first time in my life to be a bit loud !! So just imagine how big that room was !

Panel(P), Me (M), Director (D)

The interview started:
P: You are from Infosys...
M: Yes sir..
P: Why is it that every third guy coming here is from Infosys !!
M: (That wasn't the case .. I had checked out with other guys.. Still.. ) Its a big company and with 60-70 thousand ppl working there if there are .01% of it interested in a MBA course in NITIE, you would have 1/3 of today input (210 guys) from Infy.. Simply a case of numbers..nothing more..

D:::::
Don't they do any work in Infosys..
M: (Sir sachai kaise bataun . Jhoot bolna padega). No sir.. there is a lot of quality work out there..
D: So tell me first of all.. why did you choose an IT company after completing mech engg?
M: Sir there were a couple of reasons for that.. Firstly, I was interested in an IT career. There were my seniors working in IT companies, I was fascinated by the work culture, the work they were doing, the growth in those companies.. so i chose IT.. and secondly bcos it was the first company to come to our college. I was chosen and never allowed to sit for another company..
D: So why do u want to do MBA then?
M: for value addition (such a hackneyed term!) that this college would give me to move ahead in my life.
D: (Lookin at others)Everyone tells the same..Isn't it? Tell me something different.
M: Sir it's the same.. By value addition I mean the knowledge I'd gain here. Im working in Infosys and currently into software delivery line. Through MBA I'd get a inside information of all other functions in a company like finance, HR... I can choose these as electives in PGDITM and hone my skills in IT in the main course..As it is most of the software engineers become managers after 7-8 years.. So why not do an MBA prog, get the required knowledge and be where you would be otherwise after 7-8 years.

D looked satisfied.. and shortly left the room.

P: Tell me about ur work profile.
M: I'm looking into a maintenance project and I also look into the project management activities and quality assurance activities.
P: So what if there is a new requirement. Wont u as a part of maintenance team look into that?
M: It depends.. Our client has decided to give Application Maintenance work to Infy and Application Development work to TCS. If there is some new requirements in the applications we are maintaining then the client would place the bid amongst all the vendors but we would be the preferred ones as we know those applications better.
P: When a new requirement comes, what do you do?
M: We do an impact analysis after coming up with a formal system requirement specification doc. We try to find the impact on external interfaces as well..
P: Ok you that well.. Have you ever contributed something of your own to the project?
M: I had come with a new GUI, but due to scarcity of funds that proposal got rejected.
P: What could be changes at the background for a change in the GUI.
M: (Took time) Actually i changed the GUI in such a fashion so as to utilize the earlier functionalities. Only the overall look and feel got changed.
P: What all books have you read.
M: i've read a few novels lilke Papillon, Atlas Shrugged, Fountain Head, The autobiography of Lee Iaccoca.. And read newspapers..
P: Did you read any other book of Lee Iacocca.
M: No
P: Any mgmt related books?
M: No..
P: ok Ashish... thats it . All the best for ur future.

M: (I kept wondering as to why didnt they look into the certificates..There were many :( )

EOI...

Came out.. happy and content..

Went to one of the residence halls.. had a nice lunch..
Came back to the audi.. watched Lage raho munna bhai..And then went back ...

Hope so it gets converted..

CAT %ile: 97.33 (Q: 83.59, D: 93.93, V: 99.32)
Work Ex: 31 months as an software engineer in an MNC in Hyderabad

Date: 16th March, 2007

Thanks a lot to all the NITIEans (esp. IMPACT) who organized the event - good audi (though a smaller one), good movies, good lunch. seniors are more than willing to help in whatever way they can and are very amicable.

GD Topic: Is paperless office a reality or not?
4 or 5 moderators were there (can't remember exactly)
2 mins for gathering points.
10 people in GD. was a pretty decent one - though there were cross talks, parallel talks and cutting each other. At the end of 15 minutes, we were asked to summarize the GD in 2 minutes - summary was ok with everyone trying to fill in with the points discussed.

PI:
5 panelists (P), me (S)
the chair for the candidate was very much removed from that of the panelists. donno why.
they never asked for the certis. Just had the NITIE form which we filled in and the xerox copies of CAT scorecard, college/school marksheets in their hand.

Seating arrangement:
P1 P2 P3 P4 P5

S

Greeted them with good afternoons when the time was around 5 PM !!

P1: so, you are Saravanan, Electrical engineer from REC Trichy
S: yes sir (internally: but please don't ask me Electrical questions sir)
P3: what is ur company name?
S: told and also explained how big the company is - 3rd in the world for IT Services, $14.6 Billion co.
P1: where are you basically from?
S: Trichy in Tamilnadu
P1: were you a dayscholar?
S: yes sir
P1: how come? RECT wants everyone to be in the hostel....
P2 and P3: may be due to increase in numbers....they found it difficult to accomodate
S: yes sir..that is one of the reasons. they allow people from Trichy and Tanjore to be day scholars.
P1: which part of Trichy u r from? (seems to know more abt Trichy)
S: Airport
P1: how did u commute to ur college?
S: by Tanjore route bus
P1: so u r an Electrical engineer....compare AC and DC motors in terms of Torque-Speed characteristics
S: ??: I can't compare as such...may be I can explain in terms of different motors such as Induction, Synchronous, DC motors etc...
P1: no...tell me in general how the Torque Speed chars of AC and DC vary...
S: (gave some basic answers, with which they were not satisfied)
P1: ok...u know electric trains? what motor they run on and what is its Torque speed characteristics...
S: asked them permission to think for a few seconds to gather points....
S: DC Series motor....explained something on Torque-Speed....they were not much convinced
P3: ok..I will explain the situation in simpler terms so that you can answer. Consider the Mumbai local trains..they are almost packed twice as much as they can hold...so what shud be the chars of the motor to handle such conditions....
S: as the load increases, the torque shud increase...
P3: thats what we wanted.
P1: recently, they have found a new AC motor with which trains can run....can u explain that?
S: sir, do you mean magnetic levitage as they use in France and Japan? ( instead of levitation, told levitage)
P1: no, not magnetic levitation, this is another kind. can u give its torque speed characteristics?
S: no sir....
P3: give me the relation between V, I and R
S: V=IR as in Ohm's law
P1: same for AC as well?
S: for AC, resistance will include impedance as well.
(P1 gives a funny smile....)
P4: what is the equation for heat?
S: Heat in Joules as in Physis?
P3: no the heat of resistor
S: oh..ok. The heat, that is the energy dissipated by resistor is given by I squared R (I^2 * R)
P1: which book did you follow for ur machines?
S: B.L. Theraja sir
P1: oh..why not Carton?
S: though that was a prescribed book in our syllabus, we found Theraja to be simple and easily understandable.
P4: There are 7 tube lights in this room. Each is 40 watts. They burn for 8 hours a day, 29 days a month. One unit costs Rs.4 Tell me my monthly elctricity charges.
S: (started calculating mentally)
P1: how u r calculating power?
S: I take the power rating of tubelight 40W as the power consumed.
P1: oh..then the choke doesn't consume any power?
S: I think the power rating includes the power consumed by choke as well....
P1: no...anyway continue
P4: take the number of days to be 25 instead of 29...
S: (Thankful that the calc is simplified)56 kilo Watthour is the total power consumed
P4: how did u arrive at that?
S: 7 (tube lights) * 40 W each * 8 (hours a day) * 25 = 56000 assuming that the tube light consumes only 40W
S: sir, you told that the unit price is Rs.4?
P4: yes
S: then taking one unit to be one kWh (I was not sure, told them the same too), electricity charge is Rs.224
P4: ok...
P3: some 4 or 5 questions on my certificates
P3: what are the other calls u have?
S: IIMs Banglaore and Kozhikode
P3: which one will u choose?
S: I have not decided yet...my short term goal is to convert each call. I will decide once I convert the calls by discussing with seniors and others.
P3: which is better? NITIE or B or K?
S: gave some comparisons (Mandi, winter internship, best for Supply Chain Management)
P1: where did u hear abt winter internship?
S: Brochure and today morning presentations.
P3: ok...you shall go. All the Best.
S: Thank you.
P3: hope u make an informed decision.
S: sure sir.

That makes it.

Donno what to make out of it. Really didn't answer that well for my acad questions, though kept my cool and was composed.

Re: NITIE GD/PI Experiences 2007 - 18-03-2007, 09:49 AM

Hello people...
Finished my GD/PI on 16th...
Stayed at the NITIE hostel, which was an interesting experience,to say the least. There was a huge honeycomb just outside the room, so we weren't supposed to open the windows. And the bulb in the bathroom was fused, which we discovered rather late in the night...so...well, you can imagine how we got round that problem. Anyways...
GD topic: Is ethics in business a pretense?
It was an unexpectedly calm GD, probably because everyone had the same opinion. Almost everyone got sufficient airtime. Then the interview, which happened around 2-3 hrs later. Panel no: 4-those people were really nice. but since they were decidedly nice all through the session, I wonder if it was a case of flattering to deceive.
They started off by asking me about the GD, then moved on the crucial question of why they should take me. Since nobody in the panel were electronics people, they couldn't quiz me on techie stuff. Even my project was unfamiliar ground. Since I gave adaptability as a strength of mine, I was asked to substantiate that. Also there was a question about the laptop adapter. Someone asked me about my placements and other calls. They asked me why I was so impatient to get into a B-school so early (I'm a fresher). The signing off question was this - so what else do you have to say in self-defense? I gave some answer, which was hopefully convincing. Interview took around 20-25 minutes. No stress.
The volunteers were pretty decent. But the organization of the whole thing could certainly be improved.
All in all, it was a memorable experience.

Choose wisely but stick to the choices you make...even if you make mistakes, it was your right and privilege to do as much.
