Dropping a year for cat 07 - 22-01-2007, 06:29 PM

Hi,
I sat for cat 2006 but managed only a 97 percentile...
m planning to sit again for cat 07..however i am not planning to pick up a job and focus entirely on my cat prep..m in my last year of college..
i would like to know if a complete drop year goes against u if u make it to the iim gd/pi stage.
have there been instances of ppl dropping a year completely for cat and making it past the gd/pi stage as well???
also is work ex from any company worth it..or the iim ppl differentiate about the kind of work ex offered by various diff companies???
any help, advice in this regard would be helpful and appreciated..

first of all congrats for great %ile in cat buddy do not open threads for single query. and as far as u r Q goes i will suggest to do job and then write cat this helps a lot in the second stage.there r people who r in IIMs with dropping an year but they will ask u very solid resopn for that if u can justify u r case then u will win.its u r call bro i suggest to go for job as it will help u mentally a lot as u will not be a looser even if u r not thru cat07.

hi....
i wud definitely not advise you to drop an year for a rotten exam like cat. there have been many instances of ppl who dont study nething and get thru and there have been instances of ppl studying from the very first year of thier college for the cat and not getting thru. wat if , god forbid, u fall ill on cat day(as i did)??? or something unwanted happens???? and believe me dude i also got a 97 this time and its my 3rd attempt and i've found that by working in a company u'll learn a lot more than just sitting at home and slogging for a f***ing exam like cat. and u may have seen it this year itself that getting a call is a draw of lottery in the cat. and if at all u have to study , then it makes much more sense to study for exams like snap/xat/fms etc and not for cat. and to tell u a cliched line : 'life does NOT begin nor end with CAT'.

Do or Do not......there is no try.

Re: Dropping a year for cat 07 - 22-01-2007, 07:14 PM

Even i have the same question but different situation.....I appeared in CAT 06 but scored miserably....maybe because i was not able to take coaching.....In my field(CIVIL ENGG) job is very physicaly exausting and time consuming.....the location of job site is also very odd.....so instead of taking a job....if i take a drop will i be able to get a GOOD college(and here I am not talking just abt IIM's but anyother A+ COLLEGE)......Another aspect of my question is that whether there is a differentiation about the kind of work ex offered by various diff companies???....for example taking a job in low rank company in my native city?????

c mon man i dont understand ur situation or shud i say your mentality , how much more prep wud you need to move to 99 (quite a bit but not as big a deal as you are taking it to be) , you just need to stay in form for the next and cat,u have a grasp of the basic fudae (u scored 97% dint you) so why not get a little work ex and improve your profile , if at a later stage u feel your job is hampering your chances you WILL hav the option to kick it . Hope u are not one of those egoistic types who want an mba degree from iims only (besides it's not even a degree its a diploma) IIM's are only a means to an end and not an end to all means

Dude... 97 percentile is a good one, not a meagre one. I still remember when I was in my final year of college, I had given CAT and had scored just 95 percentile. And good that u r not disheartned, but willing to give another go at it.

Again my advice wud be the same. Don't give up job. Although many ppl have gone past GD/PI after giving up a year to study for CAT, u'll need to defend the reason, pretty strongly.

From my personal experience, it doesn't harm if u r working to take up cat. It can sort of help you. And yes, it will be tough to come back from work and study, but u will have to put in some amount of hard work.

About ambiguities in the paper and all, nothing to be worried. Just put in ur best efforts. Try to do ur best. Remember, if it is tough for you it will be tough for all others.

To sum it up.. don't give up work. Just put in some effort and have belief in urself.

PS: Wow, i can give a discourse too... Alternate job as a Swamiji is guaranteed

hi..

i strongly advice u against dropping for this year... it might haunt u back... yaar listen... u dont have to study 6-8 hours a day for CAT

nice and steady preperation throughout the year would land u a gd/pi call ( some get calls by not doin that as well )...

also job gives u exposure which will ultimately help u... even if u think dropping an year wont be against u but remember one thing...

take this case

person a : 99 percentile overall, 92.33 va, 95 quant, 98 di, no work ex
person b : 99 percentile overall, 92 va, 95.5 quant, 97.8 in di, 8 months work ex

tell me if u r the one shortlisting for the gd/pi call... to whom will u give preferrance

i would definetly give preferrence to the person b

hope it answers all ur queries
