Thumbs up Cat Verbal Score:some Thoughts! - 09-01-2007, 05:11 PM

I am an independent verbal trainer for the past 8 years hailing from Patna. This time around, the verbal section of the CAT has created huge debate. However, in this entire fracas, it is important to understand that debates are always welcome but it should be high on content and less on decibel. I had solved the test myself on the day of the CAT. Some of my answers did not match with the IIM’s answer key. After a careful evaluation, I had to admit that I was wrong I had a look at the answer keys provided by all the leading training institutes. I strongly believe most have got it wrong.

Coming straight to the point. I have tried to give an explanation as to why the IIM answer key is in fact 100% right as against the PTs answer key [I am sorry, I could’nt help it].

This is as per Set 222 of CAT 2006:
Q.27. Statement 1 is a judgment because it is an opinion that implies disapproval of a situation [the definition has been given at the top]-
Given the poor quality….the affected should be switching to…
Hence the answer key provided by the IIM [1] is absolutely right and not [3] as given by PT. This question was beautifully framed and a clever distracter was given by the IIMs

Q.31. If [1] is taken as the answer as suggested by PT, then the statement does not wrap up the argument.’ Guidance based on applied research can hardly qualify as ‘rules’’- this provokes the query- if it hardly qualify as ‘rules’, then what is it?
This is clearly summed up in [3], the answer given by the IIM.

Q.35- The passage ends with –‘a bad theory ….does little or nothing to help us understand] Now, the contrast must relate to this idea. [3], the answer given by PT makes no sense with respect to a good theory. So the answer given by the IIMs is right. [1].

Q, 39- The option given by PT [3] is true to a limited extent in that it is not the most appropriate-[which by the way is the requirement as per the first line of the RC section].The closeness of Nazism to colonialism springs from its racist agenda. Hence [1] is a more appropriate choice as given by the IIM

Q. 40- An inference is never stated. In the last line of the fifth paragraph, the author states ‘presumably, European lives count for more’. Thus, [4] cannot be an inference; it is stated. Hence PT is wrong here.

Q. 41- This is a sitter- A just society is not hypothetical as given by PT. Read the Passage carefully. Option [3] , given by the IIM, is perfect.

Q. 46- In [3] the answer given by PT, there is a definite input and there is a definite output. The improving upon or the critical revision is not evident in [3].While in [2] it is. Therefore, IIM is right again [2].

Q.48-The question is why does the author compare primitives with children- refer to the second para in full- the author feels increasing experience contributes to critical thinking and this is the antithesis of primitives/children at early stages of evolution. Read the passage carefully and you will know why IIM is right

My requests
  • To the members of all training fraternity. Please admit that may be you were wrong and do the necessary action to improve yourself instead of opening such debates. If PT is so convinced about their answer key I have a humble request to the training institute to provide their explanatory answers first. I am very curious.
  • To all students: Only 1% is finally going to make it to the IIMs. Disappointment for the remaining 99% is quite understandable. But let us not put the blame completely on the IIMs. It is not fair to the ones who have got the IIM call.
Something tells me that I will not be the popular one in this forum. Remember, the truth never lies!

At least I do not agree wid u on 1 question.

Q. What is the main reason for the renewed attack against communism.
By IIMs keys I have got right but I know that that is the secondary reason not the main one.

The last Q. in that passage also seems to have been provided with da wrong answer.

I also have some nagging doubts in da last RC passage.. Dogmatism and Critical attitude where I have suffered badly copurtesy IIM keys.

I only agree wid IIM keys completely for Inference Judgement Fact questions, Passage Completion Questions and Just Society passage questions.

SO that leaves the 2 RC passages with 10 questions on stake completely in doubt. In at least 3-4 questions, IIM keys r hopelessly unjustified.

I agree that coaching instis r creating needless hue n cry as the majority of questions have got right answers. However still there r 3-4 with the level of ambiguity so much that u could have chosen either of da options.

With due respect to vinaysinha, with such a paper it is very easy to justify the keys once you know the answers. Infact, this is something which applies to a lot of similar questions. The explainations you have provided are not any better than the explainations of the institute' keys.
