Lets make this a healthy discussion. I am enjoying it.

Though you had replied to pawan's post, I wud like to addres 1-2 points.

Obviously. Your point is taken. They will surely ask the guy who started the company " what he did ". But he needs to clear the written first which brings us back to the same point. A gr8 CAT percentile. Since you are in IIMB you frankly tell whether only a 99+ or a 98+ CAT percentile student can intellectually withstand the rigorous curiculum. My sincere doubts on that.

I have a simple question. What % of deserving people who write the CAT to join the IIMs (to gain business knowledge) are admitted by the IIMs ?

Another point :

You have assumed "Gaining Business Knowledge" and "Getting Lured by Placements" as mutually exclusive sets, whereas my whole point is they need to target the people who are aiming for both. Obviously both need to co-exist together. That is the whole point.

You have brought the point of quantitative skills which was not put forward anywhere by Pawan. He was talking about quantitative measures to gauge a person's profile, all nos. oriented, like %ages, %iles and no. of months, which is misleading.

Cheers,
Pradeep

Re: Chat between two serious IIM aspirants and the elusive CAT/IIMs (Satire) - 11-01-2007, 12:18 PM

Well, i have seen many ppl pondering over others getting calls while they did not get from IIMs , probably due to their EU %ile... I would like to remind all those unfortunate souls that --
The Keys of the EU section released by the IIMs have made me feel that i am lucky not to get a call from them. They were the worst possible keys that cud have been released... The prime aim of the EU keys seemed to be to prove the coaching institues as wrong rather than even try to converge on the correct answers!!!

I believe that since the keys themelves are so faulty in the EU section, we all know how faulty the EU %iles of each and every CAT taker is And ya, thats irrespective of whether he/she got a 99.99 or a 9.99%ile !!!
But the truth of the matter is that we cannot explain all these things to a non-Puy or someone who is not well-versed with all the mess the IIMs have created this year... For example if someone with a 9.99%ile in EU goes on explaining all this to some elder/friend, the other person will feel its a classic case of "Sour Grapes" !!!
Thats where it has hurt me the most!!!
I know that i have been one of the best in the EU section( never less than 95%ile) in the loads of mocks i have taken!!! Obviously its not possible for me to get a paltry %ile in EU of CAT no matter how tuff or ambiguous the questions may have been... but when the keys come out i am gifted with a ridiculous %ile...And what more, there is a discrepency of 20 marks btwn my EU score in the scorecard and those released by the IIM keys!!!

I am damn sure i was not blind to have marked so many bubbles wrongly!!! Not that blind for sure

All these things have made me take the decision that i will never take any Degree whatsoever from the IIMs in my life... They just dont deserve me and many others like myself!!!!

O.....Now I know why B dumped me.......My Birthday falls in "March"..... ......

@ Pradeep....Awesome stuff man....Infact, I believe the IIM profs shud be made to read this post of urs....And haan....why don ya give writing a shot as a career option....who knows we have the next Russel/Sartre right here.....

And a very valid point over here......"CAT is supposed to test Aptitude and not intelligence and aptitude will not change much in 5 years. It will benefit the student community immensely since they can give CAT in the final year, concentrate on their careers and then join MBA after 3-4 years after understanding business and corporate life....."

Keep it up dude.... ....n gud luck...

Cheerz,

If you think the calls are random, wait till you come to the 10 minute interviews

IIMs have a fairly random process and IIM A and C profile you through CAT and interviews (IIMA has disclosed it thankfully). IIMB has its own system of profiling, which I believe is more driven by the performance of the existing set of students there and their performance. It certainly cannot be diversity, cos the profile there is very very similar to A or C in terms of number of engineers/women/North East Indians.

But quite clearly IIMB gets the academically excellent set of students from among the lower percentiles which A and C miss out on. I know for a fact that IIMB has a strong preference for students from my alma mater (BITS Pilani) and most of them have been performing brilliantly and cracking day zero placements there inspite of failing to clear 99 percentile in CAT. And this does reflect strongly in the placements that we hear of in IIMB.

The only issue as I see it is lack of enough information for the profiling to work effectively. The CAT form does not disclose where you worked or what department of engineering you attended. And when Shrutz talks about normalization with the State Toppers marks, I find it tough to digest. For one BITS had to collect the State topper information from the boards for that particular year. IIMB would have to collect information across different boards at different years which may be as far as 10-15 years ago.

And again we do fill out a form post interview calls which is definitely not taken seriously. I for one was asked to repeat some very basic information already available in the said form. So while IIMB has formed a model with an eye on the future there are lots of inconsistencies they need to iron out before it is even remotely fair to the CAT aspirant.

Till then be smart and hedge your bets with ISB if possible or any one of the excellent schools that India has to offer right from FMS to MDI. The difference is far more insignificant than you might imagine.
