absolutely awesome post man!! saw it late and thats why i'm really sad could not congratulate you earlier or participate in the discussion that my worthy classmates, shruti and bihag had initiated. Now i feel most points have covered.
But, yes, this post is just too good.
And to give you my own experience of iimb calls. in my 4th year of graduation, i had given cat and got a fairly good percentile as well, yet no calls. And, howsoever hard i tried to look otherwise, i definitely couldn't overlook my hostelmate who had got a B call at much lower percentile, much lower sectionals in all, and a slightly lower Xth and XIIth percentage in same board. No criteria whatsoever could expalin that call even though my percentile wasn't that high types, yet looking at him i could not avoid, for on no criteria whatsoever, was i on the lower side than him. Yeah only, plausible reason i assumed then was that he had a better accuracy as that i knew he was very very accurate evertime. I even tried enquiring from the admissions committee but you all know the response is as expected "queries not entertained". I was terribly anguished at the remarkable intransparency in the admission procedure. I mean, even if i agree that cutooffs are fair(which i believe aren't fair even though the only practical way), yet the criteria should atleast be released so that peoiple know where exactly they missed out (even though i believe that people miss out only on luck rest all are secondary excuses). There should not be a situation that i can blame them for a discretionary policy or so... i don't question their rationale of their criteria but at least release the same... All i feel is that the process has to be more transparent especially since they are dealing with the futures and careers of so many people. I also agree with Shruti and Bihag that life is unfair here as well and even in placements as shruti pointed out, yet, here the stakes are simply not that high as in CAT.
Fortunately, now i have been on the right side of the fence through some magnificent stroke of luck in the next cat, yet, this has only made my belief stronger that there should be more transparency in the process. IIMs after all are accountable to us, we are their customers, and in today's world as we say customer should be the king.... i appreciate IIMA's declaration of criteria and answer keys this year, and surely this will go a long way in improving the system. But a lot more needs to be done.
At the end, i agree to the fact that life doesn't end with an IIM or IIT seat, yet, i feel it does make a difference in opportunities if you study at these institutions. And, i do have the right to know atleast what "lucky" factor they used during the particular year.

cant believe this ... this is why IIM's need a reality check..an exam cant prove how good a person is.
probably you are too good for them , dont worry
believe me , 1200 people get into the IIM's and maybe 10 are known throughout the country ... you need a bigger stage..
you should write , no question about it...
all the best brother..

So i should have thought hmm..im writing CAT in 2012, so i better make it to BITS pilani or IIT in 2008 ?
Yes, its something that happened 4 years or more ago...i agree that IIT/BITs have a really good pedigree, but that doesnt mean that one automatically selects that candidate over someone from other instis??
Thats what the PI/GD stage is for - evaluation. So just because someone is from a particular college ,how can one defend the selection or rejection of a candidate for calls?
Whats done is done..im from XYZ insti..im determined to prove myself..but have been rejected before given a chance??
