did mocks help in cat 06? - 05-01-2007, 08:05 PM

congos to all the call getter from puys...

now is the most interesting question i m throwing at u...

did MOCKCAT, SIMCAT and AIMCATS, etc. helped in preparing for this year paper... in my case i dont think they really made a difference when CAT totally changed the pattern and gave us 75 questions with relatively easy quant and di and a behemoth in shape of verbal?

i secured 97.68 wont get any calls cause of verbal... but the question is i think if i had molded myself on the mocks i personally feel i could have got a better percentile..

e.g. i scored 61 in quant and 41 in di... the problem was i thought 41 in di is safe but i failed to judge the paper.... though i made silly mistakes but if i was a novice i would have gone hard on with the paper and my attempts in the paper would have been more... but i went for safety thinking that 41 can be safe....

though mocks are good... i think u should go all out for CAT and not make any assumptions while given the paper...

so guys post ur views here

I attended the simCATs.In my case, i guess it really helped me. I tried a lot of things in the simCATs.Some worked, some failed miserably. But, i could chalk out "if this-then this" kind of strategy. It also highlighted my strengths and weeknesses. In that case, it helped. something like, net practise with a bowling machine is necessary even if the batsman is tendulkar. But CAT is always a different ball game. It is always different.

I attended AIMCATs and i think it really helped me. It helped me to try out various strategies and finally find a strategy which helped me. Actually before the AIMCATs i was confident that VA is my strong area. But a few mocks into it and i came to know that i had to put in more effort into it. And man it did help in the CAT.

So mock cats did help in finalizing my strategy and preparing my plan A and plan B for the D-Day

time mocks were helpful in strategising for a five option paper , cl mocks give the most accurate standing in % (true for all my friends barring 1,2 but eu is culprit for that) but i felt that one thing that goes wrong with instt's mocks is that they try too much to emulate last yr's mock (in terms of difficulty of sections ,very difficult di in MOST mocks )while cat changes stripes every year, i am sure mocks for cat2007 will have a god knows what type of eng whereas the cat2007 eu may be a game for all as qa was for us . This single act of giving difficult di made me feel safe in ppr and like fire kris i was considering 40 to be quite safe and on gut feeling left di 5-7 min early and di has proved to be my nemesis

Sorry to discourage the ongoing support for mockcats..But candidly speaking, I got an absolute 0 in AIMCAT 702 (75 qtns , 5 options)...My take is..if you are scoring well in mock cats it becomes ur impetus else it becomes ur impediment & believe me on the Dday when I got the question paper my first reaction was..am I going to get a 0 here too...so my take is mockcats are something which makes you to sit in a place for 2.5 hours which helps uou to focus...May be for some it would have helped in framming strategy but has never helped me in this..On DDay I didn't had a strategy at all!!!!!!!!!!

yes they did..
that's all I have to say..
I learnt how to manage my time, strategies to work and since I gave about 16 tests at the national level, I had fair idea about the competition as well.. So I can't say that it dint help me at all
as long as u are an office goer, TIME really helps a lot.
I managed to gain a lot from it in on and a half years of serious prep..
but it won't help u until u analyse ur papers regularly!!!
(am a bit high, so please do not mind this post )

I feel actually it depends on the way u take it. If u r getting lesser marks in some of the sections, it helps u identify it so that u can polish that stuff up. Actually i had taken time test series and 16 national mocks. Started pretty well getting in the high 96s, but then for a last few mocks it started getting lower and lower and once it went down to 66 percentile too in the penultimate mock.

I took that as a challenge and in the final mock cat i got 99.2 and in the CAT it is 99.59.

I think the way to go is identify the weak sections and iron out the strategies, test ur plan B and Cs if u have any(Remember u can't test this out on the D-Day. Risk is just too much). If u r not doing well, u can get to know which are ur weak points, do something to improve it. If u r maxing the mock cats, it is not a reason to relax and celebrate, coz maxing the mock cat is not ur aim , but the aim is in maxing on the day of CAT.

Atleast from my personal experience it helped for me.

Re: did mocks help in cat 06? - 06-01-2007, 01:42 PM

I gave the CL mock CATs, and though they didn't help much in terms of the format, they did help me see what my strengths and weaknesses were, and where I stood wrt to the rest of the people.

However, I do feel that getting 99.xx consistently in the mocks made me slightly overconfident about English, and I suffered because of that in CAT.
