Re: Systematic Material for Fill in the Blanks - 03-11-2006, 10:30 AM

My answers :

11) reprimand - to reprove or rebuke severely
upbraid - to find fault with
abdicate - to relinquish a throne
winnow - To examine closely in order to separate the good from the bad
extol - to praise
The prince abdicates (c) his right to the throne

12) predilection - partiality
coercion - use of force
excursion - short trip
volition - a choice or decision made by the will
So volition(d) is the obvious choice.

13) malodorous - having an unpleasant or offensive odor
Imposing - set as something to be borne
perforated - to make a hole
emphatic - strongly marked
the dirty, food-encrusted dishes became malodorous(a)

14) quaint - strange, peculiar
fastidious - excessively particular, critical, or demanding
clandestine - executed with secrecy
laconic - using few words
fetid - having an offensive odor; stinking.

Giulia soon discovered the source of the offensive odour fetid(e) smell in the
room: a week-old tuna sandwich...

15) itinerant - traveling from place to place
chivalrous - fearless, dauntless
irreverent - disrespectful
After making ---- remarks to the President, the reporter was not invited to
return to the White House pressroom.
It sounds like some negative remark, so irreverant(e) should be the right option here.

16) keen - extremely sensitive or responsive
conspiratorial - adj. for conspiracy
keen(b) eyesight.

17) jaundiced - to distort or prejudice
nefarious - extremely wicked or villainous
stereotypical - convention
With a(n) wicked or nefarious(b) grin, the boy quickly slipped the candy into his
pocket without his mother’s knowledge.

1 maudlin - tearfully or weakly emotional.
meritorious - deserving praise
precarious - risky
plausible - having an appearance of truth
Her maudlin(a) display of tears

19) complicit - Associated with or participating in a questionable act or a crime
Thus from the context (d) is the right option

20) subversion - destruction
premonition - anticipation
predilection - a tendency to think favorably of something
The authorities, fearing a subversion(a) of their power

Hope its right
