Since u tell , u r a fresher, from one angle, joining an IT major can(plz note: not 'will') make u more professional ,better aware of ur Strengths/weakness and office politics ,develop networking skills and concomitant benefits, . On the contrary, unless u r exceptionally lucky, more often than not, in these IT majors, u can find urself in a job, which downright sucks :
1. due to intellectual barreness
2. too repetitive and mind numbing if u find urself in testing domain, but defenitely do-able
2. u discover, only after joinin , writting program codes is one thing one cant do for ur life, like i did

but remember, U can be an EXCEPTION to the above..

Assuming, u do join IT: Generally , from what i have seen and experienced in my IT major, there are phases in every S/w proff's life work is too hectic to even blink or too
vetti in Bench.Going by Murphy's law, U can find urself in the former at the time of CAt and other exams. But that is no impediment, if u r determined enough to bell the CAT. Cant resist from blowing my own trumpet. I was .
**********
Now u ve written that: "I am much more interested in joining my family business"
If that is genuinely the case, i will advise u to help Pittajhi, and simult prepare for CAT.
This type of xper can help, if u r able to convince the interview panel next year.
hope my 2 cents helped.

Thumbs up Re: is dropping for cat justified - 06-05-2008, 06:44 PM

buddy there are lot many people in ur profile line and it includes many of those who were able to crack a big time. If u r able to represent urself during the GDPI as a serious candidate and one who have learned from the mistake and can so that you want to make a big change in ur profile. I dont think any GOOD college will deny u to take u in (gud college in the sense top 15-20) college beyond that may look at ur profile and shun u away(I said MAY)..

Moreover you have experience of 2 year. That will add a big time value to your profile.

P.S.:- If I will prepare this year and IF able to make it, u can definitely get example which u r looking for. Sincerely hope to set such example myself. Amen!!!

Its the most stupid thing to do.

CAT has lot of luck factor invloved in it. I can vouch for the fact that 90% of people in IIMs were never sure whether they would get iim calls.

Simply put, do you wanna put so much on stake?

Try to be practical. I don't wanna say this. Going through CAT is a painful experience. Some enjoy it. Most peopel don't. I never enjoyed it. After getting iim calls its a totally different ball game.

But realise the fact that you can't attend interviews unless you clear CAT.

No matter how much people say about GD/PI and other stuff, I feel that in the MBA admission process the more difficult and excruciating task is to clear the CAT. I found GD/PI process to be much more hyped than required.

In short, don't waste your precious time for this exam.

Use your time wisely.

I wouldn't quite generalise by saying that dropping a year is 'smart' or 'stupid.' It's entirely up to YOU. In this race, YOU are the most important factor. If you feel you can manage work and other priorities along with CAT, there's no need to drop.

But, if you do decide to drop, try and do something useful like a hobby, or something socially useful, that you can write about, to improve your resume.

There are only 24 hours in a day; it's up to you to use them to the fullest. You'll need to prioritise between friends, phone, TV, computer games, internet etc. If you travel by cab to office, read stuff in the cab. If you can spare short snippets of 5-7 mins each at office from time to time, read articles online...browse PG...utilise time.

Remember the quote from the movie Transformers, "No sacrifice, no victory"

P.S. Watch this animation, to fire you up, and inspire you to do your best!

quite interesting..
If I were in the same place, I would give this place a shot for a few months at least/ till the offer letter comes..
I would have made an entry for this job in my resume and would've tried to route any future B school interviews about this slightly different exposure!
But then again what I would do in life may not suit you well, and I cannot really comprehend your difficulties now...make a well thought decision

PS: you will have to start staying alone/ with strangers during some phase of your life sooner or later!

Hey kriti , its been just 3 days since you have joined there. I am sure things will settle down. Since you have said that its a 9-6 job, you have ample time to prepare for CAT and other exams.
As for the other difficulties you have mentioned, you might have to face the same if you join TCS.
I feel that by sticking to this job, you will get some brownie points in the interview.
