go for a full time MBA... and 3 years is no big deal
we have on our campus a BSNL manegr aged 40.. thats 18 years work ex...
another example.. a lady who has done an MBA from th elesser known colleges...worked..and now is back at Bschool.. the question of course is what value they saw here that made them want to spend 2 years of their life here...
apparantly.. an MBA from a premier Bschool catapults u several levels above wht u would be workin on without ur MBA degree... the job profile will be much more challenging and the renumeration much more satisfysing...
of course.. the question that u need to ask urself is.. *warning,...cliches ahead* why u want to do an MBA
and even though it is a cliche question...believe me u ... without having the true answer to that...do not step into a bschool...u cant possibly get the best out of the two year course here without knowing what exactly u want... !!

What is more important is the standard of the B-school you are gonna join.
Giving in 2 yrs at this juncture of your career along with a sum of 4-5 lakhs should be worth the expenditure and so, one must aim for the Best B-Schools in the Country.

Having said that, in India, unfortunately, it is not so easy to get a high quality of education even if you desperately need it and then sometimes you start believing more on your fate than your capabilities in order to get past those 2 lakh ppl who are competing with you.
Believe me, cracking a CAT is tough and it becomes all the more difficult when you have the work responsibilities which become more critical when you have such an experience. If you need to score 99+ %ile, you sure will need to keep work aside and work really hard towards CAT.
Actually I am also in the same boat having 3yrs of experience and giving CAT this time again. I appeared for CAT 2005 (scored 96.4%ile without any success) and the preparation of last one and a half yr has sure costed me something. I feel, I am lagging behind in my technical knowledge and a little underconfident as compared to my peers... :(

So, make up your mind and get into the competition.. Wish u luck..

Also, you have an option to go in for those 1 yrs Full time courses being offered by instis like SPJAIN/MDI/Great Lakes...
Hope, I perform better in CAT 2006...

110% true Kaushy...People say getting 98 - 98.5 percentile is your effort & that additional 0.5 percentile odd is your luck as its only one question which pushes you in or out..The other point you mentioned is also true..CAT costs a lot in terms of time, dedication etc..In may case its one step more, CAT, Work & Family...Well..the amount of emotional & official pressure I undergo is tremendous..Still I cant hate CAT as its only me who had accepted lovingly ..ha..ha...Yep..SPJIMR - PGDM is good..even Iam applying....

Onsite for 1 year or cat...?? - 27-01-2008, 11:22 AM

Hello All,

Am in a great dilemma. Hope thru this thread i could get my way thru.

I am a s/w engineer with 1.5 years exp. i gave cat 07 and my score is 94 % This was just a trial and first time i gave it. Now i am pretty confident of cracking cat 08. But i have a onsite oppurtunity of 1 to 1.5 years duration from now.

MBA is something in my nerves. I want to see myself an entreprenuer in 5 years from now. I want to crack it either in -08 or 09. But the real problem is shud i go for the onsite and come back and give cat 09 ( with 3 years exp) or forget onsite and go for cat 08( with 2 years exp). I know 1 year abroad work exp will broaden my thoguhts a lot and will be valued a lot. But this tradeoff of being 3 years exp will it hinder my chances of getting calls. And for sure i want to go only for indian B- schools. I dont want to go for a mba abroad.

I have a feeling as 2 is the rte exp level for a mba aspirant. I may be wrong. any experts can enlighten me please...... will 3 years exp will lower my chances of being called for call.

My two cents...

Whether doing an MBA from India after 3 years of experience is the correct decision or not depends on what you want to do post MBA. If you want to change your line from say IT to Finance, it is virtually impossible from ANY b-school in India; whether it be an IIM or an ISB. Recruiters simply think that you have too much of irrelevant experience. In that case only Consulting is the choice for you and that too mostly for good profiles you will have to accept IT Consulting. Mind you, I am only talking about good desirable profiles. Ofcourse if you are willing to compromise such as getting into Retail Banking even though you started out with Investment banking in mind, then you will get a job.

On the other hand, if you want to continue in the same line of work post MBA as well then there are no constraints really. For lines such as marketting, it will be easier to change to Marketting as there are very few people who have experience in the same line before MBA.

My advice to people who want to change their line of work after 3 years of work-ex is to apply abroad. In most good b-schools abroad, they need mandatory 2 years of experience. So in practicality, most student have atleast 3 years of exp. Since the entire batch has that kind of experience, its easier to get noticed by recruiters if you do well during the MBA.

Thanks,
Abhishek.

My half cents on the same
After 3 years of work-ex there are two options in India
1. You can try SPJAIN 1 year course ( this focuses only on IT and Op Mgmt)
2. You can try for ISB Hyd

Else you can still go ahead with Elite Schools, there is no Harm. But in India the above according to you me maybe the best option !

Well there are IT (s/w Engg) people in India who have joined IIMs and other elite institutes after a span of 3 years of work-ex , and they have well flourished in their careers, but however as alien has already pointed out that they have been more or less into the Analyst or consulting role related to IT.
Well to count on the consulting role offered in IT , well it can range from companies like McK to Infosys ( no comparison its just the the range from one of the best consulting firm to one of the best IT firms ) . IT is the core and no business can go without it (speaking like a true SW Engg) , however roles into finance and all can be offered too , if you have moved after your grad to the role into Finance or Marketing , or you have really excelled in your acads at the college and maybe if you can relate to what work you have done in your employment days to finance , lets say you are into banking domain of your IT company and you can answer the queries pertaining to the same in your final placements. Another part is, how well have you done your summers !
In all I have to say is that when you have 3-years of work-ex after reading my post or any other post , never think that 3 years of work ex has been a waste. You just have to take out the best from that 3 years to do what you want to achieve in your life for the next 1-2 year ( depending on the span of your MBA course )

SHIT HAPPENS !

hi brother, mere dost jab jaago tab savera & in an economic scenerio like ours it is always handy to be equipped with an mba degree(diploma) plus it provides a platform to explore our potential by refreshing ourself and a good institute always gives an edge over others thus a full time mba from a reputed school is perfect catalyst for career growth ATB, Anuj
