Re: SP Jain interview Clarifications - 01-01-2004, 02:42 PM

Hi all

I am a student of SPJAIN PGP-1. I saw lots of discusssion going on, so I thought it is the right time to pitch in and resolve all ur queries. U can feel free to ask any question which is bothering you.

Ok lets start from start.
Few people questioned the selection procedure. Let me make it clear.

U know SPJain get around 20,000 applications per year. We just don't want to take people on high academic profile, but also look into other soft skills and other traits to become a good manager. The criteria includes

i. Academic qualifications
ii. Extra-cirricular activities/social activities
iii. CAT score
iv. Essay form
v. Work experience
vi. Something special about you which differentiates u from other.

A proper weightage is given to each parameter (not supposed to be disclosed) and everything is handled in most accountable procedure.

1. So it answers first question, which says that inspite of getting 99 percentile I didn't get a call from SPJain. Eveything counts ... just not percentile and more in case of SPJain.Thats somewhat true even with IIMs ... my friend got call from 5 IIMs leaving IIMK. Another one from A and L only . So its differnt parameters and different qualification criteria.

2. Why interview even before CAT or CAT score.
Ok when u get 20,000 applications and ur college just don't want academically brilliance but a balance of everything, then the selection procedure will ofcouse take some time. So the interview starts right now and gives score on each of the parameters. Before declaring final results they incorporate the CAT scores also. I feel thats very logical because after the CAT scores are out, there isn't much time for interview. Take my example, I had around 45 mins of interview to get into SPJain. Instead for IIMK it hardly went for 10 mins (no judgement, just fact).

3. We go through the essay forms and profile of people and start sending them interview calls. This is just the first list for interviews and 3-4 (might be more) list to come. So chill out and don't worry. Keep an eye on mail box. This list for interview will continue till the final CAT scores are out.

4. Work experience - Yes thats definitely an important criteria. Look one of the important parameter on which a B-School is ranked is placement. Ofcourse it is comparitively easier to place a guy with prior work experience and that too on a higher pay scale. Finally B-Schools give what industry/market wants.
So for Operations and IM branch - Only experience people preferably with Engg. background should apply.
Fin and Marekting takes freshers - around 30% of Fin and Marketing consists of freshers. FMCG companies and banking sector do prefer freshers.

4. SPJain has no reservations for Reserved Categories (ST/SC) or army personal or handicapped. Everything is based on merit.

5. Few queries regarding GD interview. Normally its very informal chit chat between the Professors and probable student. Even a present PGP-1 student will also there in panel (not heard in many B-School). Now they already know ur acad background and profile. They just want to check how well u'll gel with the SPJain culture. So mostly you'll be asked to give ur view points on any general topic. Even if the topic might be technical, you are expected to give what a layman thinks about that. For that u gotta have a coherent thought procedure and a reasonably good communication skill. Its a group interview (5-6 people) where the Prof. will throw any general topic and wants the opinion of all.
"NEVER take a stance which is unethical or against human values" (my observation)

Finally I would say there is no point in cribbing upon any system. There are pros and cons with each. So appreciate the fact that a B-School is taking so much of extra pain to get in the right candidate.

I repeat once more, that the list which has come out is not final. Also there is no special prefernce for anyone who gets call in first list. Its just their luck that their application happened to be first few to be opened by SPJain. Don't worry BHU bhaiya ... Thumhara number bhi aayega

Any clarifications/queries please feel free to post.

PS: Also please refrain from passing blanket statements ...like ..what the shit is happening or they have no procedure in place or something is going under table.

Hey guys... Just keep urself cool.
I was also getting the same message till yesterday and today got an interview call and now my status in the website has changed. So i guess they are processing it
step by step and updating the website accordingly.
Well regarding my profile..
Kuch Khaas to nahi...
B.Tech from JNTU, Hyd.. percentage : 84
2 yrs work exp. in IT field...
Opted for IT Management in SP Jain...
Coming to the essay part, no mention abt any kind of social service...
So i guess couple of ppl from PG will also get calls.. and theres nothing to worry abt.. The letter said that this is the first and the last interview and i will NOT be called for any further interviews ever after CAT.
Guys who got calls, can u post if u also received simiar message...
The whole process looks very strange............

Glad to see you take the initiative and set the records straight. But with a nickname like that you tend to represent your college, which I don't think you do. PM me and I'll change your nick and set your rank to "SPJIMR 2005/2006" , else by looking at your nick, it can be confused to be an official statement from SPJIMR itself, which I don't feel is right or the situation here.

Regards,

PS : Nick Later Changed from SPJIMR to VIK

Ok let me clear again, but it seems people are posting before reading the message above (I got this impression from the kinda of queries).

Quote:

This message in Simple english means that the application number which you have entered has not been called for interivew (i.e either it doesn't exist or he has not cleared the criteria to be called for interview)
I think its absolutely fine not to give the exact reason for not being called for interview.

To get into SPJain its not mandatory to have social service in ur essay forms. Its ur overall profile. But yes having an inclination towards social work shows ur concern for people (EQ) and thats one of the traits SPJain is looking for future manager. So it definitely helps but not a must condition.

SPJain means that this is the call for interview and you can select any of the dates proposed to you. It also means that we would not be sending you reminder after every list to come for interview. This is last and final and now it ownes upto you to decide if u really want to come for interview.

I repeat that more list is on the way, so chill out.
The process and communication I feel is very straight forward and clear and there is absolutely nothing strange about it. But still u feel any catch, then feel free to clarify.
