Expected percentile based on the CAT score - 15-12-2003, 02:20 PM

Hello guys/gals,
I acknowledge that this is not the right time to post this topic as the memories of old CAT must have been faded and you all must be gearing up for the next CAT (hope no more CAT's after that). Actually, around this time I am free from my work load so goy some free time to post this message.

I just thought that this analysis would help you all to know where stood in the last CAT and how much effort is to be needed for the next one. So, without much wait I start my analysis.

Data gathered:
1. from this forum, other forums, coaching sites and my friends who too cat for Last 2 years.

Assumptions:
1. The cat marking strategy is +1 for correct answer -0.25 for wrong answer.
2. The scores you all have submitted are correct as per your best knowledge.
3. Since the pattern for CAT for past two years (since 2001) have been more or less same there won't be much variation in the general distribution of the expected score.

CAT this year was on the same lines 150 questions spread across three sections and each section has more or less the same difficulty level for past 2 years.
Verbal: moderate difficulty
DI: Easy
Quant: tough

Note: 1.27 Lakh ppl took CAT this year

So keeping on this line these would be the expected percentile (overall) one can expected based on your expected overall scores:

97+ Man you can see yourself All India top 5 or 6. 100%
75+ - 97 99.90% to 99.99%
62+ - 75 99.00% to 99.90%
55+ - 62 98.00% to 99.00%

Below this I was not in a position to estimate as mostly ppl scoring good update their scores on the sites.

One can assume uniform distribution between the two higher and lower score margin of a slab.
ex.
if you score is 58.25 then your percentile would be
98.00 + [(58.25 - 55)/(62 - 55) * 1] = 98.46

if you score is 68.25 then your percentile would be
99.00 + [(68.25 - 62)/(75 - 62) * 0.9] = 99.43

Well so ppl don't loose hope as you can see that even with bit of efforts you can scale your percentile by 1%.
Also since CAT takes individual performance in each of the sections into considerations ppl with score around 50 averaged well over 3 sections also have chance of getting calls from some IIM's.

So, ppl hope you have found my analysis useful, and all the best for next CAT.

<R u sure about this ace_bubble >

well there are sections cutoffs to, and weightage depends on individual iims and since 1.27 lakh ppl gave cat
2% means 2500+ would get Calls, so if with 50 uve done well in all the sections u have a chance cos there would be many with 55 - 60 whose one section would have been very very bad.

so chance is always there

Oye ACE_BUBBLE, u should have been a statistician yaar. My gawd, WONDERFUL post. But from ur analysis, i am finding it very hard to digest that there is only a difference of 2 percentile between the scores of 55-97, that is overwhelming but some where in the back of my mind , i know that it is true. Can competition get any touger than this?????????????????????????????????????????????? ????????

hi,
<finding it very hard to digest that there is only a difference of 2 percentile between the scores of 55-97>

man its competition man, well look from the mock cats u all have given, I remember in one mock cat topper had 85 and 100 ranker had 55, and 1000 ranker 45.

here it is topper 97+ and 2500 ranker 55, isint the two results comparable?

<wat about people who get scores in 40 range>

well I cannot predict for this as it would be very very close 1000's of ppl for just 1 mark, also most of the ppl with low scores dont post their data so it difficult to extrapolate.

hope this solves ur queries.

hey ace_bubble ......trully a morale booster post ..... with my petty score 0f 56.25 ...my spirits very pretty low after Nov 23rd .... thanks you made my day !

hey just as an aside .... where does job experience figure here...if at all ??
I mean would a 1 yr. job exp. give you any advantage in terms of getting a call or would it figure only during interviews ??

the method behind the madness - 15-12-2003, 09:38 PM

hi guyz
one of my frenz got thru to a top5 institute in '01(thru cat)not an iim
his frend hacked into thier institutes database info abt students
this is wat was the institutes method of selection
weightage basis
70 cat
(calls for 66 up)they convert cat %ile into a score on 70
10 work ex
10 interview
5 acads
5 gd
my bro an iim grad thinks that gd hardly matters and even interview performance is not of 2 much consequence he thinks that its the persons profile which makes biggest diff after cat score
for eg if guyz with 0 wex frm xaviers cal +ca do well over time they look to gettin such ppl

overall they r trying to move towards the american concept of wrk ex but keeping in mind india's ground realities i dont think it is goin to wrk
thats my personal opinion though i have 1.5 yrs of wrk ex
