Here is the TIME analysis for AIMCAT-0720:

AIMCAT0720 - Analysis

If you felt that all the preparation that you have done for the past few months has gone down the drain and the next six months may not be enough to crack the actual CAT, then it means that you have taken the AIMCAT0720 paper!

The most important thing to do at this stage is to NOT DESPAIR!!

If only you knew that all students, barring exceptions, have done equally badly in the AIMCAT, the feeling will not be as bad. After all, the IIMs have to fill their seats and it can’t be that nobody will make it. Take heart, CAT is a relative grading exam and your performance would be judged on the basis of others’ performance as well.

Here are a few words of advice to all the students who have not done well. Anybody getting even 35 marks should be happy about his performance. In fact, the scores of top rankers in this AIMCAT could well be in the 50s or 60s only. That says it all about the difficulty level.

Since you have 25 weeks for the actual CAT, every student can easily improve his score significantly provided he plans his study in the next few months systematically. Those of you who have not done the basics of some of the quantitative topics can take heart that for the next AIMCAT on June 11, your ability to attempt more questions will go up. From one AIMCAT to the next, the student should keep improving on his weak topics in each of the areas of CAT so that over the next 19 AIMCATs, one will then be in a position to fine-tune his way of attempting the exam. The message is loud and clear - work on your basics in all the test areas. You cannot wish your way to a top B-school. The only way is to work your way through.

AIMCAT0720 had three sections (with subsections A & B) and 90 questions. This is along the lines of last year’s CAT paper. The ideal time allocation would have been 40 minutes for each of the sections.

Section I - Data Interpretation + Data Sufficiency + Reasoning

The first table was a relatively easy set and students could have easily attempted at least 3 questions. The other 2 sets in this subsection were relatively more difficult but students who skipped these and moved to subsection B would have soon come back to these sets. This is because the sets in the next subsection are mostly reasoning-based which usually take more time to answer. However, even in subsection B, sets 15-18 and 23-26 should definitely have been attempted since they are more straightforward.

Section II - Verbal + Reading Comprehension

This section started off with a slightly difficult passage. Even the other questions in this subsection were not very easy. Lack of practice is likely to have resulted in many students taking a long time over some of the questions. The last set of vocabulary questions reflect the new variety of questions that have been introduced in CAT. Good students would have attempted most of the questions in verbal and a minimum of 2 passages in 40 minutes. Many would have come back to this section later, after finding the going tough in the last section of the paper. In the entire paper, probably this is the only section where most of the students can expect a double-digit mark. Ideally a student should have attempted this section first and then gone to other areas of the test.

Section III - Quantitative Ability

This section was undoubtedly the toughest but those who kept their cool and searched for the easy questions, would have come across at least eight to ten of them. This would be enough to cover the cutoffs for this section. However, it was not easy to spot these easy questions under pressure of the exam. Over the next few AIMCATs, you should aim at increasing this ability to locate and answer the easy questions. This is what will set you apart from the rest of the pack.

Overall, as we said, the paper was difficult. Those who attempted more than 45 questions would have done very well, especially if they took care to spend enough time on each section to clear the cut offs. For those who found this paper really tough, the saving grace is the fact that the same was the case with majority of the test takers. They can take heart from the fact that the cut offs in this AIMCAT would be at a low level.

BEST OF LUCK FOR THE NEXT AIMCAT on 11th June 2006
