Re: Dropping a Year for CAT... What are the options? - 21-05-2006, 01:46 PM

Hi BSchoolDreams,
I quit my job to prepare for MBA exams. wrote CAT 2004 but could not find enough time for preparation so decided to quit my job and prepare for it exclusively.
After 6 months of intensive preparation I squandered my CAT and my feeling for the next 3 days after CAT was terrible. Did not know what to do, concentrate on the other exams or go back to job etc. Decided to go the distance and finally landed up with admits in IIFT and SJMSOM,IITB.
So, from my experience it is not advisable to prepare for CAT not taking up a job or quiting a job. Think of all the extremeties and the circumstances you need to face if you dont land up with a gud b-school admit. ponder over this and take a rational decision.
with like to help you in what ever way i can.

Re: Dropping a Year for CAT... What are the options? - 21-05-2006, 02:19 PM

I am working with TCS for the last one and a half year and took CAT 2005 and scored 96.42. But I will appear for CAT2006 with job in hand as there is no point in leaving a job.
There is a misconception that leaving job will give u ample time to study. But anyone who has looked at the CAT 2005 paper will agree with me that there is not much to study. If u sit today and solve this paper end to end, u will be able to do it comfortably. That shows that u have the elementary knowledge of the concepts asked in CAT.SO what extra will u study after leaving job.
So friends, work for 9 hours and after that slog for 2-3 hours and u will be there.

Regards,
Akash

Only full time paid work experience is counted as relevant. I am not sure of the CSR executive specifics, but if you have made up your mind that you are dedicationg your time for CAT full time, then I think you should make sure that you do something else as well. While at interviews, you should be able to show that you weren't sitting idle for a whole year.

The best idea, I would say, is to continue in your job (provided you don't hate it for any reason) and prepare. If you want to quit, a better idea is to work part-time and prepare part-time. The reasons:
1) You can't prepare full time! You will really feel bored, but you will not have anything else to do than to prepare for CAT. And this might put additional pressure on you. Working part-time will give you some welcome breaks everyday and refresh you. This will be for good, from the preparations point of view.
2) It wouldn't be very nice to tell in your interviews after CAT that all you did during last year was to prepare for CAT. Whether you like it or not, it doesn't look like a very good thing.

Cheers,
APT
