IIM(2006-08) batch crackers : Post your Mock-CAT records -
28-04-2006, 04:13 PM
Dear Friends,
Last year while preparing for CAT, I always used to wonder how our Seniors did in their mock-cats.
I think it would be a good idea if all the IIMians of this year posted their record in the mock-CATs of diff institutes as it would serve the following purposes for the CAT-06 takers:
1. Looking at your scores(esplly those of studs), the CAT-06 takers(esplly freshers) would get an idea of what kind of scores to aim at during the mocks.
2. In case you havent done well in some mocks, it would raise their spirits when they have a bad mock after seeing that a bad mock is not ruled out even for the best of us.
3. I think it would also give us all a fair idea of the degree of correlation between the performances in mock-CATs and the actual CAT performance.
So... I have started this thread for the benefit of CAT-06 takers, keeping in mind the privations I went through while giving the mocks.
I would also like the successful people to give a word of advice after posting their record.
Prayers are all....
HALLELUJAH...

For the record, I took the TIME AIMCAT series last year and this is a copy-paste of my performance:
All India Ranks
91
94
166
97
150
78
20
55
148
37
355
212
54
91
26
18
128
64
The average score taken over all mocks comes to 58.4765.
My CAT score was : 59.66
Split: Eng: 26.66---> 99.57
Mat :16.66---->98.79
DI : 16.33---->98.23
Overall : 59.66--->99.89
I crossed all cutoffs acc to TIME 13 times. Missed DI 5 times. Maths and Eng, I always cleared.
1. There is a close correlation between your aimcat and real-cat performance. I think there wont be a difference of more than +/-5 to your final score compared to your average.
2. TIME key went horribly wrong this time, it gave ppl false expectations. Not their fault, though. CL was bang on this time with the key.
3. Regarding calls, they are very mysterious.I've even seen a couple of 99.9+ %iles not receiving all 6 calls!!!The vice versa is also true in some cases.
4. The IIMs do not have "rigid" sectional cutoffs. A decent split across all 3 sections is of paramount importance, contrary to what we were led to believe in the mock-cats, where overall score was emphasised and the sec. cutoff was sometimes as low as 75%ile.
5. Finally, the most important part of any preparation->PRAYERS are very very crucial as the "luck" factor played a huge role in determining the calls.
Prayers are all....

I guess there is no such fixed correlation b/w mock test and CAT performance. All kind of P & C is possible. But still let us have inputs from the revered souls who made it big, may be we can have some help in our MOCKs.
It's your attitude which really matters:grab:

ahaan junior askin for gyaan..here i go....
Mock Performance....
Took Time Test Series..
%ile variation-- 81- 99.8x
first test did well scored ard 99.4x... got the schol.. but here is d pitfall.. ppl haven't really started at tthis time.. so don't turn complacent that u don't need prep.. nd u will crack it on d big day.. this happened to me in CAT '04.
second mock .. a shade over 99..
then started conc. on accuracy .. coz that was my weak link in '04....got 95 in mock 3
then ard 97-98 for a while..
then came d huge dip.. just 81 %ile...must b ard mock 6 or 7....at this time i have been out of touch for few weeks.. just gave mocks.. gave an hour to analyze nd noth else..
then started puttin sm effort..
wat happened was i was consistently scorin 50 in mocks.. give or take 1-2 marks...even if i attempt of 85 marks or only of 70 marks.. score was ard 50 %ile var.. 98-99....
then d last three.. went for speed again...havin acquired higher accuracy...gud scores..i infact scored 70+ in last mock.. though paper was easier too.. then bcame cautious again in mocks i attempted @ home...
nd in CAT went for speed again.. 95 marks attempts.. ard 60 score....
abt the sectional ...eng.. i never went above 97%ile in
DI nd QA used to b 95+ almost always....smtimes in 99...
though initially had sm prob wid crackin all three sections simultaneously ...but over d time it went away..
also TIME had very realistic cut-offs... @ ard 85 %ile.. so that also helped boost spirits....
so that was my Mock exp....
Caution:- Don't read too much into MOcks.. wat happens on big day can b nyth.
ATB to all fellow pagals...
Cheers!

Yes this is a good idea... Can I outsource the task to someone from CAT 2006
But in short...
My AIMCAT percentile ranged from 65% to 93%
Gave a total of 14 AIMCATS missing two of my scheduled 16...
The max total I ever made was around 45
But I did study in exam mode for the last two weeks. And very rigourously in the last two days... mostly math...
My Final CAT percentile was 99.41% and actual total was 50 with LACKI.
SPLITS: EU - 98.68 (22.67) QA - 96.43 (13.67) DI - 95.56 (13.67)
I guess those serious about analysing the MOCK-ACTUAL relation would go through the posts in the last years thread themselves and find out more details...
I will try to give my views on how to approach the MOCK/prep etc later
Best of Luck for those going for CAT 2006
K

Re: IIM(2006-08) batch crackers : Post your Mock-CAT records -

Out of the 17 Time Mock CATs, I attempted 13. Only on 4 occasions I cleared both sectional and overall cutoffs. Highest rank was 670. On 4 occassions my percentile was in 70s.
Out of 9 CL Mock CATS, I did not clear all sectional cutoffs even once. My overall percentile was mostly in 80s or early 90s.
Out of the 8 CF mock CATS, I attempted 6, cleared all cutoffs just 3 time. Usually ranked in some early 90 percentiles overall. Highest rank was 120.
Out of 4 IMS mock CATs, I attempted 3, did not clear all sectional cutoffs even in 1. Over all percentiles were always in early 90s.
Career Avenues - Took 2 of them. Cleared all cutoffs. But my percentile scores were in 70s, probably because of lesser sample population and all stud PG junta taking these tests.
Actual CAT results.
Over all - 99.27
Quant - 96.43
DI - 96.03
VA - 97.97
So moral of the story, even if you keep screwing up Mocks, don't worry. Your rank in the Mocks hardly matters. What matters is to use the Mocks to identify your weaknesses and remedy them. And it is good to take Mocks from more than one institute to ensure you get used to a more wider variety of of patterns.

AIMCAT 0618 71.6%
AIMCAT 0617 70.83%
AIMCAT 0616 68.31%
AIMCAT 0615 71.89%
AIMCAT 0614 88.69%
AIMCAT 0613 Dint Appear
AIMCAT 0612 Dint Appear
AIMCAT 0611 Dint appear
AIMCAT 0610 58.89%
AIMCAT 0609 90.97%
AIMCAT 0608 65.64%
AIMCAT 0607 72.9%
CAT 2005 - 99%
IIMK call... couldn't convert... landed at IMTG - Finance Course
Plan was to give it this year 'to be in touch' & go all out for CAT 2006... well, that went for a toss... !!
Guess what worked was that I had no expectations on the D-Day.... So.. need to just relax.. and remember that its no the be-all and end-all... this CAT thingy...
Cheers!!!
