Re: IIM(2006-08) batch crackers : Post your Mock-CAT records -

Me... got 85.32 %ile in CAT but yet putting my simCAT results as it might be helpful for those preparing for CAT - 2006
simCAT %ile
------- ------
1 97.03
2 95.0*
3 96.3*
4 91.96
5 84.**
6 86.**
7 75.**
8 93.45
----------------
CAT-05 - 85.32 (DI - 96.09, Quants 71.69, Verbal - 62.92)
In first three simCATs, I didn't try anything new. But, for the next three mocks, I started attempting more question and that affected my scores badly. I think proper selection of questions matters much, I mean, you may sometimes be successful in selecting them, while other times you may not. And that's why the fluctuation in my %ile.
Also, more often than not, my sectional %iles used to be quite uneven. I used to get 99.5 percentile in some section and around 20-50 percentile in other section in the same test. I think that happened because I never used to divide specific time to the section (unless in one simCAT where there was sectional time-limit.
So, I think alloting some specific time to each section may be very helpful to those who get uneven marks across the different section.

ya, mocks hardly matters and overdoing the mocks could be injurious.
Moral of my story, even if u score well in mocks, u can screw the CAT badly.
Got into top 100 in IMS SIMCATs 4 times.
For TIME AIMCATs, %ile varied from 92-99.7x, but got more consistent in the last 4-5 mocks, where scored over 52 in each of them with decent break ups.
Took some cool avenues tests, some PT tests too. And the avg %ile for the last 12-15 mocks cld be easily about 99.3 - 99.5%ile
But ended up with mere 98 odd in actual CAT, with no calls obviously.:(

Wrote TIME mocks :-
AIMCAT601 --> 99.33
AIMCAT602 --> 96.21
AIMCAT603 --> 88.89
AIMCAT604 --> 91.85
AIMCAT605 --> 96.05 (Cleared all Cutoffs)
AIMCAT606 --> 93.83
AIMCAT607 --> 95.46
AIMCAT608 --> 92.93
AIMCAT609 --> 93.8
AIMCAT610 --> 96.26
AIMCAT611 --> 95.36
AIMCAT612 --> 99.28 (Cleared all Cutoffs)
AIMCAT613 --> 98.54 (Cleared all Cutoffs)
AIMCAT614 --> 95.51
AIMCAT615 --> 94.73
AIMCAT616 --> 97.35 (Cleared all Cutoffs)
AIMCAT617 --> 93.48 (Cleared all Cutoffs)
AIMCAT618 --> 97.11 (Cleared all Cutoffs)
Wrote 7 CL mocks, %iles ranging from 89-99.41, pretty huge variation. Cleared all cutoffs arnd 3 times out of 7.
On an avg I was scoring 98+ regularly in EU, arnd 91-92 in DI and doing pretty bad in QA. My avg score in TIME mocks was around 47-48 and 50+ in CL mocks.
CAT 2005 :-
EU --> 98.68
DI --> 98.39
QA --> 91.08
Overall --> 99.41
Lemme leave the analysis for another day !!

Yes, agree with you. You cannot read much into mock test pattern but an individual can make out his/her area of strengths and weaknesses.

hi guys!
well, my this post will surely bring smile to some faces here!
CAT2003: score varied from 32-45 in PT mocks...
CAT2004: Score varied from >35 <55 in CL mocks
CAT2005: Scores at TIME varied drastically for me.. I hardly managed to score in my strength area, which was English.. I still wonder y my thoughts were never in sync with TIME's ... Score varied from abysmal 22 to 52..I touched 90% in time only once! hovered on 80s most of the time... broke the <1000 rank barrier only once!
But i managed to score pretty well in CL & PT mocks.. wud score 95%+ on most occasions and would clear cut offs quite e few time..
D-DAY(CAT2005): DI- 96.01% (14) Quant= 94.56%(12.3) Verbal:98.9%( 24.7)
NET= 99.39 (~51)...
The only thing which changed from CAT2004 to CAT2005 was the mental strength and ability to stay calm( add few Vedic maths skills to that )..
some may like to read below post for details:

Differnce from previous apporach to Mocks cats:
- used more of my vedic maths skills.. its imperative u try them in mocks or else u'll dig a ditch for urself while trying to use them on D-DAy!
- Stopped reading any Quant theory books..solved very few topic based (TSD, work&time type) Qs...
- Used less of formulaes
- Used the TWI(think without ink ) approach.. i.e. application of more of common sense, working backwards...
this helped me save time and improve accuracy..
- practiced with only sectionals and mocks.. tried to solve all Quant questions un-conventionally.. This made me spend almoast a day on solving/analysing mocks/sectional!
- intially gave mocks only once a week( the regular TIME ones)..
gave 1 mock on weekdays once in a while..
- Last 40 days: increased the frequecny of mocks to almost one-every-alternate day.. but no fixed strategy in terms of x number of papers to solve in w eek.. entirely dependent on my mood and time availability since i was working..
Tackling boredom of sloving MOCKS( i assume u meant @ home):
I didnt have much options.. I knew i had to do something differnt from regular junta to have that edge.. They spent time erading theory and doing conventional stuff.. I focused entirely on bettering my strengths and acquiring new ones: unconventional/lateral thinking! ( big words I know, but u need to experience that,, can't be explained!)
U just need to find a place where no one disturbs u for those 2 hrs.. U wont get a chance to get bored once u start off with the test, provided u serious to CRACK it!

TWI is an amazing book. I was having great difficulty with Quant. In all mocks, I could hardly ever cross 80.00. And 10 days before CAT, I found mention of the book in PG. Immedeately bought it. And my entire approach to Quant problems changed. Developed a completely new outlook. Managed to get 96.43 in CAT '05.
Agree about the formula part also. It is better not to waste time mugging all kinds of horrible formulaes. CAT does not test how many horrible formulaes you can mug up.
