MDI Vs NITIE.. help me out -
25-03-2006, 07:53 AM
hey people congrats to all who have made it somewhere or the other.. and wish good luck for those who are expecting their calls from somewhere or the other..
till now i have made it to nitie (im course)... yet to pay the fees... converted all the calls i had this year...except nmims...
dont have any iim call.... the other call in wait is mdi... which i think i ll make it... frankly speakin i think i have figured out what they look out for in an interview... i had a nearly half an hour interview... and i did not buckle at all under pressure... very stressful... only towards the end i started loosing cool... but i did not show that at all... this was my conviction...
i think i ll make it... the difficulty i have is to decide which will be better in the long run... placements wise... international plaements are there in mdi.. 12-14 in no. compred to very few may be 1 or 2 in nitie ( i am speaking here in both cases as an optimist )
the other problem is i myself am an engineer and would like to take up marketing and operations as dual specialization... i am not sure how good nitie is in marketing... in operations they are the gods... thats true... mdi is a big zero in operations but considered the god of marketing...
so putting in all your views and suggestions... if u could kindly help me out... it ll be very nice of you....
and if you people have other doubts.. put them down... so that if i have any info on them i ll get back to u...
thanks a lot and wish you all the best once again
guti...

@sudyst.......but there r other ways to resolve this dilemma than discussing it openly here.......open discussions regarding insti comparison not encouraged on PG.....i think i made it pretty clear in my posts........do look for some previous closed threads(if it exists)...hope u will get some lead der or else pm current students of this school to clarify ur points.....!!
cheers!!!

Re: MDI Vs NITIE.. help me out -

This thread pertains to a very specific and genuine query someone has. It is not a "Which school is better" kind of thread, rather it is "Which school would be better for me". Anyways, I'll just put in the salient positives and negatives about MDI, and some NITIE person should do the same.... - Marketing: No doubt one of the best faculty and lots and lots of excellent courses, from International Marketing to Rural Marketing, from Advertising Management and Product and Brand Management to Sales and Distribution Management and Consumer Behaviour. If you are doing marketing at MDI, you'll thoroughly enjoy it.
- Operations: This year an operations specialisation is being floated, and many many people are taking up mark/ops, fin/ops, ops/strategy kind of dual specialisations.
- Other Specialisations: The courses of finance, information systems, economics, HR, OB and strategy are excellent and many in number. We had a tough time choosing 15 courses for the second year as there was so much that looked inviting!
- Student Exchange Program: MDI probably has the second best student exchange program (next to IIMB) in India. We have tie ups with some of the top 5 B-schools in France, Germany, Austria, Italy, Poland, Norway, Thailand, Australia and South Africa. We also have tie ups with a couple of American schools, but since the academic semesters don't match, no one is able to go there. This year, about 40-50 people in a batch of 164 are going abroad in the fifth term. Then there is an option of pursuing a dual degree from certain schools, wherein you go back after your sixth term and placements here and study for another term. You get an MBA degree from that institute as well. Plus, if you are really interested, you can sit for placements and internships over there and get a job abroad. This year, one person got a job with BMW!
- Campus and Student Life: One of the most beautiful campuses amongst B-Schools (this is a feedback given by other B-Schoolers). And the student life is just rocking here. Parties, night outs and loads of fun, along with a lot of hard work! It's an excellent combo! The proximity of the malls and the markets will never leave you bored for want of things to do. All night CounterStrike games are a common phenomenon, especially during exams!

Now, some negatives - Operations: It's definitely not as good as NITIE, but it's pretty damn good! But it may or may not get floated. The minimum number of people wanting to specialise in operations has been reduced from 15 to 10 this year.
Will edit this post as and when I think about more. The decision is simple, if you want to do marketing as a major, MDI is the place for you. If you want to do operations as a major, close your eyes and go to NITIE. Both schools will give you excellent learning and placements and quality of life. Depends on what you want to do!
Cheers!
PS: I did not get a call from NITIE. I probably would have taken it up because I wanted to do systems. Here at MDI, I am doing a Fin/IT dual specialization.
There are 10 kinds of people, those who can read binary and those who can't.

I guess the only problem was the response this thread would generate. Your response was mature , balanced and I am sure if this were more of a norm than exception no one would have any issues. I hope the NITIE guys come out with a similar response and set a good example for all future X vs Y threads

Re: MDI Vs NITIE.. help me out -

some more points
Location : Bombay definitely better than Gurgoan anyday!!! (unless you live in gurgaon! )
Junta : Nitie only engineers . MDI comparitvely less engineers!
Perception : ppl have this perception that nitie is good only for systems and ops. but says not at all true! they are also good at finance!!
I would say go with Nitie. thats coz MDI gd/pi will take a long time to complete. i guess 31st march is the last gdpi. then the results will take some time. you cannot be too sure with these bschools admissions! a good interview according to you , may be a very bad for them!

Okies... so heres a very specific query regarding the programmes at the 2 B-schools. And also, the inputs given by Vineet and others are commendable; objectivity maintained without imposing the image of a specific B-school over other. Letting this thread continue as a guinea pig on how B-school comprisons would/should be done.
PS: gutti, i feel u could have asked relevant info about the B-schol programmes at their specific threads. Neverthless, this continues, lets see how mature a disucssion as can have!
