How to write CAT under Loud-speakers ?

Need some serious coaching on - How to write CAT under loud-speakers?

For those who had their IMS Simcat centre as IES Bandra, Mumbai; this would be familiar. May be there are such cases elsewhere too. Well, my CAT centre is the same as the one IMS is conducting its Simcats. There is always some sort of function (marriage, yagna, school function, god knows what all...) every sunday here. Worst...11-1 is the time they peak out. Loud speakers on in full volume, it seems like a joke writing an exam of the magnitude of CAT there.

As there are several exams being conducted here every sunday, chances are that the situation will remain same even on Nov 20. Will the IIM authorities do something about it?

Does anyone think something can be done about it? Or is it better to only get used to it?

Any suggestions on how to manage Nov 20 like kaan mein rui, etc. A friend of mine even suggested buying those swimming earplugs.

servo...dont worry i think da iim officials will take care abt da noise factor.... also with da media hype dat cat attracts now a days...just post a message in nee of da media...they will surely take da matter accross...but then preventive measures should be taken ...for u should be prepared for da worst...ear plugs are o.k....but i do believe dat da concentration level dat is reqd in cat...wont allow u to get distracted...dont worry keep da focus on...

hi,

i had a similar experience last year at my CAT centre. The exam centre was a catholic school, and the kids were practising chritmas carols and other songs on loudspeaker (!!!) in the adjacent compound. Apparently, the school has two adjacent buildings, while one was given out for conducting CAT, the other was being used for cultural activity rehersals...

I don't think IIMs or anyone else will do anything abt this. It would be better if you go prepared with ear-plus and all. In fact, after reading your post, I have been reminded of my last year's horrible experience and am planning to buy ear-plus.

Hey man dont worry buy these silicon ear-plugs they are quite effective then the normal cotton ones & sound will be reduced atleast by 80%..

Ditto. Ear muffs made up of soft fibre would do the trick. incase u've taken GRE, u would know that the ear muffs they give u there are really good. if not , try gathering some info from some friend.

Thanks for the suggestions. I think its better to be prepared than to regret later. I'll try those earplugs.

Sherlock... I had the same problem in CAT04.. my centre was some Convent skool... n there were prayers going on in the nearby Church.

Needless to say.. i screwed up RCs!

Infact I too was taking Sim6 at the IES BAndra centre.. where the louspeakers were on and some chants going on. But infact.. i was very happy that surrendipitiously .. i was getting a Net practice of wat could happen on D-day!

So.. take it positively.. and make ur preparations insular to all these speedbreakers!

PS: curtz... gr8 idea ... pass on the lolly to the media and they will take care of the rest!

I guess its safe for all of us to carry earplugs. One can never say anything. be prepared to face any eventuality for CAT.

I faced the same problem during one of the Mocks, a few weeks ago. Could not concentrate and scr**ed it up... Got a pair of ear-plugs the very next day. Ear-plugs are pretty good at insulating the noise.. However, I feel that the concentration level after using ear-plugs is lower than that which would be present if you were to take the test without them in a quiet environment.

Since there are a few weeks to go, I suggest you buy a pair of ear-plugs rite away and get used to them before the D-Day... That should help...

P.S.: I dont' think the IIM guys can do anything about the noise factor. I know of a person who wrote CAT04 in bangalore. 10 minutes into the exam, a fruit vendor started to shout right outside the centre. Nobody (not even the media) can stop this kind of a disturbance.

This bit of info, abt the 'Ear Plugs' is actually news to me, honestly didnt know abt this...

Was thinking abt using them but then jus 1 ques...Has any1 out here actually used them in CAT before??...I was wondern if the authorities wld allow its use...I mean, the last thing u want is some1 to rudely disturb u midway thru the test n arguing with u wrt the use of the Ear Plugs...I dont know if callin up IIM n askin abt this issue is a very smart thing 2 do, or may b it is...But nonetheless, if any1 has used it last year, pls do write in; Wana know if its allowed...
