I have started my preparations with CAT. I was informed by my friend that he is planning to go for GMAT - as he has started his prepaprations only recently and will not be able to give a full shot for CAT NOV-2009. He also said that he would have to wait for an entire year to give CAT again. By going with GMAT preparations he said he can give his shot by jan or feb (as GMAT is held round the year unlike CAT). He also said that there are good B-Schools that accept GMAT scores.
Now as i have also started my preparations recently i have a dilemma whether to go with CAT wait till next year NOV or instead choose GMAT and give my shot by feb or mar by quitting my job now and get into any top b-school within India. Please guide me which way i can choose as i am planning now to quit my job and start my full time preparations. Also tell me about the comparison between difficulty levels, scope, B-School choice that i can choose from if i go for CAT or GMAT.
I would like that i am not choosy or so specific about getting into IIMs alone. All i want is to get into a pretty good B-School, learn a lot, come out with a pretty decent salary package.
Also i would like to hear some useful suggestions from you. Thanks.

Hey dude, how are ya??
Basically let me tell you, first of all that GMAT is mainly used to pursue a MBA abroad by most students. Though NRI's can also take it to pursue MBA in India.
As per your post, I suppose you want to pursue MBA in India itself. So via GMAT, there are very few good Bschools in India, which you can get admission in. Check the various websites for more information.
Some of the prominent Institutions in India to accept GMAT scores, are ISB, Hyderabad, and GLIM, Chennai. Though both of these require Work Experience(preferably at least 2-3 years).
But judging by your situation, I think CAT will be your best bet. Some of the main differences between the 2 exams are:-
1) CAT has a much higher difficulty level in QA, then the GMAT. Basically the sums asked in GMAT, can be solved by a schoolkid. For CAT, you need loads of preparation, and a definite strategy.
2) You can self study for GMAT, and still score quite high, just by following a few guides. Whereas for CAT, you will probably need to enroll yourself in a coaching center, give loads of mock tests, and do lots of planning.
3) By GMAT, you can get into a variety of good colleges abroad(not applicable to your case, I suppose), even if your score is not very high. But if you want to get into a good Bschool for CAT, you need to score quite high(basically quite a high level of competition).
So basically, in short, CAT is a much tougher and competitive exam than GMAT, and need careful planning and execution. But most top Bschools do not desire mandatory Work Experience via CAT. But by GMAT, Work experience is compulsory. There are other differences which you can find out on your own.
Besides, I would like to say, 'Why limit yourself to CAT? Especially cause IIMs are not your only destination.'
There are other MBA exams too, XAT, JMET, SNAP, IIFT, FMS, to name a few. I would strongly recommend you appear for all of these. And most have a similar pattern of syllabus. Its not that you have to prepare separately for all.
Anyways, decide after you think over this carefully. Discuss each aspect with your friends.
All the best...
