Hi Puys,
I joined PG a few days ago and I started a new thread, but the moderators suggested me to post it here: So it goes one more time..........

All I can see here is that most enginneers are going for an MBA. There is a considerable population from commerce and other backgrounds. I could not see anybody from the science background. Can you please tell me: How much is the chance of getting into one of the IIMs from the science background? I will be appearing in CAT 2009 this year. I have done M.Sc. in Chemistry from IIT Kanpur in 2007. Worked as a Junior Research Fellow for 1 year (2007-2008 ), joined Carnegie Mellon University, Pittsburgh as a PhD student last year and left the program in May 2009. Right now I have joined CL for CAT prep. and not doing any job. Unfortunately there is not much opportunity for doing a respectable job in India for science students without a PhD degree and some Post-doctoral experience. India has got almost no commercial research industry except a few outsourcing companies like ChemBiotech, Syngenta etc. and Astra-Zeneca in Bangalore. I wish to do MBA mainly because I want to establish my own company doing professional quality first hand research work in Bio-organic Chemistry. What should be my career path? Is going into an IIM would be helpful? Most business persons are not actually even familiar with the research industry and have no idea how to establish a company in which PhD and Post-docs from premier universities of the world like MIT, Princeton, UCSF work towards changing the history of the mankind. e.g. Celera Genomics, which have done much of the work behind the Human Genome Project. But no such company in India exists since Management majors have never appreciated research as an industry due to their lack of knowledge in research itself. Reddy's lab is a good effort but this is only a very small venture in terms of what can actually be done. What I want to do in life is to bring great minds under one roof, manage them to perform like different people playing different musical instruments in a concert. Nobody has done that in India. Lack of industry interest in research has hindered many progress. I will give one example: some years ago, my previous mentor Prof. Sabyasachi Sarkar at IIT Kanpur invented a method to prepare Carbon Nanotubes from soots obtained by burning mustard oil. The invention got some coverage in major newspapers in India but he could not apply for a patent due to initial lack of funds originating from the lack of understanding of industry people of the potential of research. After some time the Bayer company of Germany acquired the patent of this particular method...!!! This is the cheapest method of manufacturing Carbon nanotubes till date.(He managed to get an American patent sometimes back of a procedure to prepare water-soluble carbon nanotubes). If you can give me any idea of what kind of B-school shall I consider to join, it would be really great...!!!! And after all, shall my "not doing any job right now" status is going to affect much?!

hey...i might not be a mba student but from what i read you have pretty much planned out future...its good for you....just prepare honestly for cat and score a good percentile.i am sure you would be able to impress the pi panel with your thoughts and your future plans....if you do well it doesnt matter if you are from a science or engineering background, you would surely get admission into a good b school
(By the way you have a really good profile ,it would surely help you during your final selections......)

Re: Personal/Career/CAT-job Dilemma Queries : A Repository - 14-07-2009, 12:08 AM

Guys i have some queries.
I'm pursuing a Dual Degree in chem engg from IIT Delhi.
1.Am i eligible for CFA Level 1 December exam or not?
2.And if i am will i be able to get through considering that i have no knowledge of finance?
3.I have been doing some research on FRM as well.Do u think it would be a good addition to my profile alongwith a CFA Level 1?
A swift reply would be appreciated
Thanks

Re: Personal/Career/CAT-job Dilemma Queries : A Repository - 14-07-2009, 10:59 PM

Hi Guys,

I'm a fresh engg. graduate (CSE) and have 2 job offers before me. One of them is an enterprise-level tech support profile and the other is a normal software engineer (developer) profile.

I'd like to clarify that the tech support profile is not the conventional BPO tech support, but enterprise-level tech support. Which basically demands much more specific and higher level expertise. It is placed very high in the technical support space.

The software engineer profile is the usual coding and development profile and involves development of software for use by the organisation itself.

I would like to know which of the 2 profiles would serve me better in B-school admissions and also help me more during my MBA. I've heard tech support isn't as well-appreciated as a development profile. Also, I wanted to know if the compensation offered by the companies is a criterion when B-schools are considering you for admission.

Hope you guys can help. Thanks

As per me the SE role is better than the tech support role. even if u r in a enterprise level support people will look at it from the same point of view. another thing is in a SE role u would learn a lot many things which ll not be there in the tech support role.
as far as the compensation is concerned at the time of gdpi they dont matter much. but definitely at the time of ur final placements they will. as of now just concentrate on ur CAT as u have ample time in hand. score well and everything will fall in place.
All the best....
