Re: Personal/Career/CAT-job Dilemma Queries : A Repository - 17-10-2008, 01:16 PM

I will be applying to B schools this year...some of which include 1 year MBA's where the specialization is asked for specifically...Now, in that case , how is one supposed to zero in on ONE specialization..
i have over 2 years of experience ( will be 3 by the time i join a b school) in an IT firm in the Talent Mgmt sphere..and my profile has been anything but 'boxed' in this two year period...i have been involded in trng delivery , content dvpt , designing a leadership dvpt program on one hand..and beign involved in sales training on the other , account based marketing , even RFP repsonses , i have even dabbled in comceptualizaing/branding and implementation of some of the org. strategic talent dvdpt initiatives...

Now if i am asked to make a decision as to what career do i want to choose for the rest of my life , i 'd have no clear reposnse to it...i seriously dont have a clue on that ( and neither do i consider myself foolish for not having an inkling )...So under these circumstances how does one zero in on a specialization? HR consulting looks exciting but so does Brand Mgmt and heck , even services mkting ( am in IT)

I did my Bachelors in Economics from DU and joined staright from campus in '06 ..and my dept. was formed in '05..so there was never a scope for striaghtjacketing in the team..there were no processes in place..and so we got a chance to get our hands dirty..fortunately or unfortunately ;-)

What's a poor soul got to do ??!!!

Let me begin by saying that you are one of the luckiest guys around. Not many, as part of their profile, and in their first job at that, get such a variegated experience.

You have a lot of knowledge about a lot of things. Why are you straitlacing yourself then into one field?

Also, why are you looknig at only those bschools that box people from the first day itself? Don't do that. It may be easier to get into these bschools, but trust me, its equally difficult to change later.

Your question - what's one gotta do? is not the right question. It should rather be, 'What should I not do?'

You need not worry about choosing your specialization as early as the application date. There are some colleges yes, that do ask for such things, but they are not the only eggs in the basket.

There are also many institutes that provide a generalized basic course, and leave it to you to choose the components of your major. You can then fill up your course buckets with whatever suits your mind. Neddless to say, your experience would come in hand to decide what you want.

You have a varied experience behind you. Don't use that as justification to say that you are undecided, and want to lock yourself in one field. Don't do that.

Regards,
Grondmaster

Don't bother too much. Nobody knows what to do. I am not sure even after 5 years of pre-MBA and 6 months of post MBA workex. Just for time being decide on one field and decide thats what your passionate about for at least the next 4-5 months and finish all your SOPs, interviews etc. You can always change your mind later. I have even heard of people going to other fields after a specialized HR course like PM&IR in XLRI. Maybe somebody from there can confirm. Just make a story that helps you play your profile to your advantage and go ahead.

Hi...
my brief profile
10th-90%
12th-89%
graduation - 80.51%
(Bsc (H) Chemistry from St Stephen's College (DU))

after my graduation I started preparing for CAT 08 n now with the predicated scores of 70-75..i know i don't stand any chance in a gud B school
So i was thinkin of takin up a job so that i can take cat next but the only option i can see are the BPOs...i don't think there is any other job i can get with just a Bsc degree...
is this idea of a bpo job a gud one ...?
I am preparing for the other mba exams but this thought is constantly on my mind ..therefore, tryin to find a solution..

if sum of the experts over here can look into my problem and advise me sumthin..plz do so..

There are still lots of jobs for freshers available. You just have to search around a lot. e.g. The PaGaLGuY.com Slog Blog Join Us
The most important thing is that first assess yourself and find out what you are good at, and what you want to do "in life". I know of a science graduate who was really fixated upon making a career in advertising, he made sure that he crashed at offices of all advertising agencies, asking for an interview and show his passion. After lot of attempts and lot of disappointments, ultimately he was able to convince one agency to hire him. That guy today, is doing really good and has a good standing in the advertising industry. All you need is lot of passion and readiness to slog your posterior off! Nothing substitutes hard work and perseverance.

Cheers,
Rohit

Hi nitesh....

I think i can understand your dilemma as I am in the same spot The only diff. being Accenture instead of Wipro.... I personally feel that 18 months is a pretty long time to explain, and although there are people who do make it in such ways, I don't think its advisable and further more, you will yourself feel much restless and stressed out if you don't work for a year and a half....

Try for a job in some other field of your liking if you feel that you may not make it here but try not to sit idle...
