And there is compulsory training for freshers in Patni.Am surprised you have not heard of it.As for adding no value to the profile, brand names like infy, patni, tcs do matter. No surprise that many of the b-school converts are from Patni this year again.
One good thing about Patni is strict following of quality processes and methodologies.Seems frustrating sometimes but the knowledge of "processes" come handy in GD/PI and most when you are working as a manager(which one hopes to become one after graduating from a B-School).

would second that... I am working in patni for last 2 years and joined it as a fresher...
undoubtly training is best in industry or can be compared to best... u have technical, behavioral and QDI trainings... and processes, yes we are known as one of the best process oriented company in IT.... I was promoted to the role of PL quite early in my career considering that I am a fresher.... I have been working in this role since last 1.5 years and boss to tell u the truth all the interviews i cleared majority was abt the software processes....
see no body in B school interview will ask you tough technical questions... but they really are interested in the processes and practices we follow like CMM 5, ISO, CMMI, PCMM, SEI, etc....
Also taking the point of converts... yes this year many ppl (i know) who will be joining some of the best b schools in india...
Including me 3 ppl going for IIMB (from same building... so one can estimate how many in whole patni), 8-9 ppl going to atleast one of the IIMs, 15 ppl if u include schools like SP JAIN, IITB SJMSOM, NITIE, MDI, FMS, XLRI......
Regards
Mohit

training..!!! -
03-05-2005, 04:16 PM
bein trained in infy.. can say the trainin here is 1 of the best.. in fact the EnR(education n research) dept here claims its been rated as the equivalent to a BS in comp sc..!!!
offcourse.. the problem of bein trained in 1 thing.. n ultimately gettin to work on another technology.. exists.. but tat doesnt mean the quality of the trainin is bad..
as for other companies.. patni,hexaware,tcs.. all have some trainin progs.. but none as intense and comprehensive as infy's...
n finally abt the refernce material circulated in infy.. "champaks"... hehe.. no1 knos who started callim them those.. but even our KT guides..( as the teachers who train us call us themselves).. sometimes refer to them as champaks..hehe..
but ultimately.. its hands on experience tat teaches u the most. so irrespective of where u work.. u will gain competitive knowledge of the technology u work on..
only diff.. have a tag like infy,TCS,wipro in ur resume.. will help durin biz school admissions..

A person, XYZ does his BE comp. N joins Pepsi. Now see, any company in the world has computers for ne kinda work in there organisation.
To make these computers run, each company keeps a department of IT wid techie people who can help them out on the technical fronts of computers....may b this bunch a fellas bring new technology 2 d company or assist not-so-savvy computer guys in operating their comp). This is service providing division of the company (just like administration, HR, medical etc)
So what chance does this kinda BE comp fellow stand in PIs of good b-schools.
PS: Actually I should also add this point; most of the organisations (hardcore comp firms in India) are not making nething new. The people over there are also providing services only. The difference is they do so for customers sitting in USA,UK,etc. XYZ does it for people in his organization. This is a real eye opener. The only prob is how he explains the interview board abt all this?

SDA..If i m correct ur question seems to be how to explain ur current job profile,it may be in any company, to the panel....
Well to begin ,urs truely is also a BE computer, and had the same question asked at the intvw of IIT-KGP....
I had done my project at the IPCL developing a realtime system for one of their plants...
I think it as an advantage becos if ur in certain domain ..u will get the ques regarding that domain only..
For example i had to explain the entire process of the system with respect to the process in the plant..
As far as i have seen big companies like IPCl,IOCL ..the work of the techis is only to maintain the system and the development of the system....And concerning providing help i.e HelpDesk ppl are generally not the techie ppl...
Cheers
Yogi

Sda,
I guess you did not read the thread carefully.here we are discussing about the training imparted by IT companies, not the chances of profile you asked for.
As for the chances of a profile like this,I believe as long as you can justify and convince the panel that you learnt a lot even by selling vegetables in market you are through.
Sometimes at the start of our career,we do not have many choices. We may end up doing a job which does not exactly match are SWOTs.The main thing is that you should be thorough in whatever you are doing, and even if you are not, convince the panel you are!!!
My 4 aanas,
Rohit.

That guy is gonna have 100% chances to get into any B-school provided he can justify the sync between his studies and then to job and then to CAT.........
