wanna b a CFO or CA to fullfill -->Equity Research job/entry level i banking jobs - 25-03-2005, 11:42 PM

hi u all there

i m sunny and this is my firrt post ever on this forum so hope my experience here will b fruitful

so lets get back to d core

wanna b a CFO or CA to fullfill -->Equity Research job/entry level i banking jobs

well MAVERICK999 HI The biography u spelt out in ur post is very similar to mine but it seems thst i m not so well talented as u r(but its my life n i cant do ne thing)
i m also a science grad and was plannin 2 do mba from iim but my cat apearance was a blunder so i m back to my ordinary life, doing nothing

but i m having d same tastes abt finance stocks derivatives that i'll love to carry them throout my life

suggestions 4 u my friend is that

1 do some quick courses from NSE,BSE of ur liking (ie u have ooptions of doin them in stocks derivatives ,options ,futures, mutual funds etc they r very short courses of 1 or 2 days and even u can attempt them remotely by just studin their course material provided to u @ d time of registration.

2 even u have some courses run by BAJAJ CAPITAL in new delhi some where in and around CP and KG marg (for more info u can mail me) they r just fabulous and u have placements also there

3 or do CIMA (chartered institute of management accounting )london
(for more info u can mail me )it is more than what CA s and goes upto making financial decisions in a board room so u can even aspire to be an CFA or ceo

thanx
u r always welcome to contact me thro this forum and also thro email
bye take care

I am rank holder CA and currently working in Kotak Investment Banking as Analyst .To get an entry level break in the world of finance, you need qualification specifically related to finance. Passion for finance is good thing but if i ask you to calculate Beta of a security, you can not. That is perfectly normal as you have not learned your theory concepts.

Top MBA is desired for a head start. The other solution which i will recommend to you is to do CFA (AIMR/ICFAI). My company prefer CFA + engineer background for areas like Applied Finance, Financial Modelling etc. You dont have to leave your job. Study consistently every evening and on weekends and appear for exams. Take your time and learn your finance concepts well. In interview they are going to ask you all the basic concepts and you need to be expert.

Regards,

Akhil.

great post maverick! wonder y i found this thread so late. i guess there r many guys who want to get into equity research(ER) and lack a background.

as for myself, i'm a fresh grad bsc(H) comp sc. I wrote cat this yr. scored 90.45%. ppl have been telling me that to get into ER one needs a CFA or top class mba.
I cannot go 4 mba or cfa this yr.(it sounds weird, forgive me 4 that). Does that means i have no chance of breaking into ER world?

as i have gathered, nse certifications r not a challenge and they do not help building a profile 4 an ER job. i've been searching the internet 4 weeks and could not find any helpful short term course. not the least in delhi.

lets get together. if there's a way, we shall find it.

Hi guys, I am a CFA and an analyst at a leading IB in Mumbai.
I know very well that you guys without any work ex or a background in finance coud definitely land-up in IBanks. In fact, the IBs require people from vast diverse backgrounds and graduates in statistics, mathematics, engineering and IT are a big hit- even if they dont have an MBA. In fact I have seen that many IBs abroad even have physics , chemistry and music graduates working for them !!

The only catch is that you have to be from a top-rung institute in your graduation. Secondly, you must either register for a CFA if your interested in financial markets/ equity research but incase you are in love with corporate finance, you may well do CMA from Institute of Management Accountants (USA) or ACMA from CIMA UK alongside your job.

The UTI Institute of Capital Markets also offers a 1yr Securities Markets Program in Mumbai for those wanting a short-term course but in any case FORGET NCFM CERTIFICATION for breaking into ER/IBs coz they r just plain shit.

Feel free to ask more on it.

Regards,

Tumtum.

thanks for that warning tumtum. NCFM certifications just give some basic knowledge even though they r outdated. I was looking 4 a short term course in delhi. I m considering enrolling for cfa. Can u pls tell us smthing abt the selection process for Ibanks, like what sort of candidates they prefer and the designation they offer. I'm still looking 4 short term courses or oppurtunities through distance learning.
regards,
lohiya.

Re: Equity Research job/entry level i banking jobs - 28-06-2006, 11:45 AM

hii,
i'm a final year electronics engineering student from IIT kharagpur and as usual interested in IB. It's better if i can get into private equity or venture capital. But i feel i need some IB exp before it. I've read through(or going to take courses as audit from VGSOM) derivatives, merger aquisition analysis, corporate finance, risk management....
Though companies like goldman sachs, lehman bros., ML, JPMC american bank etc coms to the campus and recruit btechs as analysts...I would like to know what exactly they seek in a probable candidate.
In fact i would like to try for us or uk based posting as well
and in that case i'll chuck iima/b/c even if i get them through cat06
so guys ,specially those who r already working in IB,PE,VC, plzz help me to aquire the needed expertise towards a career in IB->PE,VC
is it possible to apply for cfa (aimr) now itself..?
and reference to books is very much welcome
by the way what ever i have read abt fin related thngs is not documented coz either i took them as audit or self reading
if possible plzz tell me some internationally creditable course or certification...something i can showoff in my goldman sachs etc interview or will help me get the shortlist

For being eligible to give CFA exams, one has to be a graduate atleast.

Apart from CFA, another course much in demand is the Financial Risk Manager (FRM) (www.garp.com) and Professional Risk Manager (PRM) (www.prmia.org).

Actually there is a very good competition between both the courses and PRM is now emerging stronger as they have forged alliances with the Carnegie Mellon Univ, UC Berkeley Haas B School, University of Reading UK etc.

Whatever the course, the risk management coverage is more quant specific in PRM ( a hit with techies wanting to get into risk modelling n stuff) and both these courses are a hit with IBs the world over.

Apart from that, one may do the MSc/MS in Quantitative Finance or Certificate in Quantitative Finance (CQF) to get into a good quant modelling role in an IB.

Infact I am myself planning to take up either of these courses for strengthening my profile further.

Feel free to ask for more.

Regards,

Tumtum.

PS: For knowing more about competition between FRM and PRM, refer to
