Hi there,
Even i was a bit confused between the two.. I searched a lot about these two..and as of now, I am in mood to give both of them..
For CFA one needs to clear three exams.. level 1,2 and 3. You also need a work ex of 4 years before being the charter holder.. The work ex needs to be in the relevant sector.
For FRM one needs to clear just 1 exam.. and have a work ex of 2 years in relevant field before being able to use the designation
Obviously, as both are overlapping, you can show same work ex for both. But, for CFA you will need additional 2 years of work ex.
CFA is more popular than FRM. However, both are well known and there are plenty of opportunities for both. Also, GARP website asks you to fill your resume, so I
think that you can also get contacted directly through them istead of applying for jobs. But, obviously you need to apply individually to get a desired job. Beleive me, that won't be a pain.
Now, i think that you are worried about work-ex requirements. After clearing the exam, you can mention that you have
cleared the exam. This will surely boost your resume. I don't think your present work ex in embedded systems will be beneficial. After clearing the exam also, you can get a very good job (both for CFA and FRM). so, better don't think much about the chances after clearing the exams because there are plenty. What you should think about is whether you want to work in this field. Though the FRM will cost you aroung 30K and it is held in India too, CFA is a costly affair and expect aroung 2 lacs for all the levels combined. The exam is not held in India, so one needs to go to other centers outside India to appear for the exam. Depending on the exam center chosen, the costs may vary. Do check the websites of CFA and FRM fo rmore details.
Btw, I also don't have any work-ex but i am going for both because I am sure what I want. It is up to an individual to decide as costs are high on stake. FRM may require you to go through a more detailed study plan, whereas, CFA level 1 is quite easy (
thats what I feel based on what I have studied till now).
