Question Management and SAP !!! whats the future?? - 29-06-2008, 01:49 PM

Hello everybody,

I am very new to MBA world and building my aspirations for MBA.
I have two years exp in SAP technical (BASIS) (not at all related to any kind of business or management).
I am in a technical field and dont want to be in that for life time( Nobody dose ). Its not I dont like Technology but Managing technology is something that appeals me.
I want to understand dose SAP and MBA go together as a career combination. Dose MBA has anything to help my cause???

I want to do MBA but I like SAP a lot. And want to continue in SAP but in management that keeps me in touch of technology as well.
Will MBA be value addition to SAP. What kind of profile do you think I should opt for in SAP World.

I DONT WANT TO GET INTO FUNCTIONAL PART OF SAP THATS SURE !!!!!!
I rather be a technical guy in SAP as I am now !!!

I have seen MBA ppl taking up SAP as a career. But what I want to do is opposite of the trend. Are there any SAP fokes in this forum ....... pleases share you exprience with MBA.

Hi Nirvana,

your question is not very clear, u wanna MBA, u dont wanna a techy , u wanna be in SAP ? say it clear man .
only I could understand that u want to do MBA and that is also without leaving your field. ofcourse u can do this after completion of MBA from a gud b school u can continue to SAP again . after MBA there will be great value u can add to your profession to get some management and business exp, and its not a big deal that u dint have work ex in management till date.

P.S. Its personal thinking, go for majority of puys .

Yes you have got me right . I love technology but working as a technical guy its just like doing same things again and again. You dont do any thing new, before you thousands of people have done the same thing innumerable times.

I want to drive technology . Make Technological solution. Manage technology in short. I am not even aware of such a profile exits or not . But help me to stream my focus in a direction that pragmatic.
Let me know what could be alternatives

Hi Dude!
My few cents on that....

SAP is a vast ocean.....BASIS , ABAP, Functionals and the new streams.
BASIS is just a small part of it. You can start knowing other modules....

For a brief info about scope of SAP visit their official website for case studies and u can see MBA's as process makers, process followers, customisers etc.....

as you move up the value chain in an organisation u need to understand / plan the business processes and SAP gives you the freedom to implement them according to the plan.

Functional junta handles the functional modules and senior people in SAP do blueprinting n all.....

If u have an eye for business processes and SAP is your forte.....its a brilliant combination. You can aspire to move to IT consulting, systems consulting and similar fields.....

MBA's who join SAP generally start with Functional roles (as I see at my place...) but it totally depends on the drive, skills, exposure and knowledge. Even non MBA ccandidates fare well at very high consulting positions....

As to what to do.....what to chooose.....choose what u love.
If you love what u do.....theres nothing like it.....the scope future and prospect is always bright if our love for it is genuine.....

Hope that helped......

I am well aware of all SAP modules at least just a overview.
What I am not sure is that what could MBA do in SAP in combination with technology . I dont want to get into funtional.

Since you are very clear that you dont want to move to FUNCTIONAL, so close that chapter.

Now SAP basis consultants who stay in Basis generally follow a simple route which is :: Consultant-->Sr.Consultant-->TL-->PL-->PM.

or another route which is followed by less no. of people :: Consultant-->Sr.Consultant-->Tech Specialist-->Performance Specialist.

As a Sr consultant you cn except to get into some Implementation projects and do justice to your technical knowledge

If u take the first route::
By the time you become a PM it will be around 10-12 years you would have been in SAP and at the end of day you will be doing what a manager is suppose to do,handling everything except TECH. Not that you would be restricted to do TECH,but as i have seen other things keeps a manager so much occupied that TECH is the last thing on his mind. Here i wud advise you to go for MBA and may be come back to an IT consultant profile. (SAP mein he )

if u take the second route::

First this decision would need deep analysis, coz since this is the path less travelled by hence not many can last on it. It wud be same as terming one self as SAP ka Technical PUJARI . The time duration might be arnd 15-20 years before you have companies dependent on you for everything. I mean Patience will be a forte here. But i think journey willl be nice, you can except some awesome Tech learning.

But whatever route you take one thing is for sure that SAP is gonna be unshaken for at least next 10 years.(or may be 20). So a great career awaits you.

MBA is not a necessity, it will jst give you a broader perspective, diff managemnt skills, plus a BOOST in your Growth Graph with some nice money. (which you will ultimately earn as a Senior PM or Performance Specialist).

Both of them require lots of years of exp but I dont believe its a challenging job at all. So I want to let it go.

As of now I am on an Implementation project which is cover all SAP modules except MDM. Working on installations and security.

PLease consider the fact that basis is getting outdated and Netwaever is in.... So I belive basis consultants have a steep road ahead to fill the gap.

I am ready to let go basis . But if we talk about management in SAP is only project manager and program manager the ultimate thing you can achieve ? Is there not any other management+technology field you can figure out in an SAP organization?

Well i dnt knw what to write, coz u r moving in a SAP circle having 3 parking spaces ::

SAP-BASIS

SAP-MBA

SAP-PM

The bold part highlights that now after functional chapter i think u r willing to close the Basis chapter too. I wud advise you to go for MBA coz u never know when a new thing will interest you or an old interest would fade away. You can always come back to SAP after 2 years and you wud definately be in a better position.

So boss decide how to go abt it,every1 will guide you here, but the final call is urs!! As they say

{ if u have never dared then you have never lived. }
