switching from software job to technical sales - 14-06-2008, 01:12 AM

Hi,

I need some help, i joined an mnc 1 yr back and am working on server storage and San switches support project for 10 months now( threw me on the project the very next day of ilp grrrrrr.......didnt even get to enjoy bench) .

now the thing is i dont like my work(most of us dont lol) and the path from where i am working right now is >>san admin>>implementation engineer>>storage consultant.

almost all the guys are in my project are very satisfied with it coz the work is good and as they grow storage commands a premium vis-a-vis other domains.

now the problem is even though its all seems good, i dont want to be doing that.

I want to be a salesman. so with a b.tech in comp.science from a decent coll and 1 yr of ex is it possible for me to switch to a sales role in an it company? or is it something that has mba as its pre-requisite.

its not possible for me to switch within the organisation. Also given the current scenario dont want to risk switching to a very small company.

what should i do?
would be thankfull if somebody could guide me a lil.

Thanks
Rohit

Rohit,

Firstly, I did view your question. I was more inclined to recommend a better thread to post your question at. That being said, please dont open new threads for singular questions.

As for answering your question, my take is why not?

There is such a thing as technical marketing. Considering your experience you would be well aware of the intricacies of how the servers and storage systems are (I plead ignorance with whatever aspects of the profile you have put up but bear with me). This allows you to sell the product better.

Simple example.
A guy who does engineering is recruited by a company to sell its electronic range. This could include channel sales or developing a dealer/retailer base.

In your case, were you to join say a company which manufactures servers - you could as easily go into sales considering you have the backing of the technical aspects. Selling a product needs a salesperson knowing the product. You know it so selling it shouldnt be a problem!

As for what other people are doing why bother about what makes them happy?

MBA is not a necessity but it is a value addition.

However, if you were to shift from a purely computer field to say FMCG or Banking be ready to start low but aim high.

Also, why not ask around with your HR if there are some sales profile in your company itself?

Cheers and hope you figure out what to do.
