Swtching from PhD to MBA - 09-06-2008, 02:41 PM

Hi ,

I am doing my PhD at USA and completed two semesters there. I have an engineering background.

I want to make a career switch as I am not enjoying PhD anymore. I want to do MBA. Is it at all impossible at this point in time to swtich to a MBA program from a PhD Program ?

I need serious suggestions on this.

Thank you .

Hi puropagol

I think I can understand your concerns.

I have got similar challenges several years ago because I was offered a scholarship to study in NTU Singapore for a PhD in electrical engineering. Fortunately, or unfortuntately, I pull myself out from the programme before the start of my PhD course and today, I am a MBA graduate and I have also studied for another Master in Strategy and International Management under the sponsorship of McKinsey in Switzerland.

Your serious question requires serious answers. Pulling out from a PhD is complicated and starting your new education as a MBA candidate is not easy as well. Several questions you need to be clear include: Why do you want to do a MBA? Is it because you want to pull yourself out from PhD so you want to switch to a MBA? If this being the case, then your MBA application to top business school is not strong.

An analogy is here:
Tom hates eating apples, so Tom chose orange.
However, how come Tom doesn't consider bananas, grapes, or any other fruits? Why must be oranges? If he chooses to take organges, a logical reason is he likes oranges.

I wish you good luck.

Kind regards,
Thomas

you can quit the phd program and go for an mba program. you could inquire in your college if they could transfer you to the mba program if you are looking at that option and the college has a policy of that or go to a new university for the mba.

can you tell me what you mean by 'not enjoying phd' ? when you must have joined for the phd , you would have an idea what you are in for , for the next 4 - 5 years and probably a career in teaching so why the switch to an mba now.
Thanks.
