Can anyone please tell me which are the best universities abroad (Preferably in UK, Australia/NZ) to do a PHD programme in Human Resource Management and Industrial Relations? Currently am doing Masters in Personnel Management and Industrial Relations at Utkal University, Orissa. Thanks!

Re: Why HR? - 30-09-2009, 04:36 PM

Hello,

I have completed my B.E in computer science in 2009 and am currently working for an I.T. company in kolkata. I had got placed in TCS but could nt join because i am color blind. I am preparing for CAT this year . I wanted to know if there is medical tests(color blindness tests especially) done even for Managerial posts in most companies. I know for sure that some companies like
TVS,TATA Motors test for color blindness for engg. graduates. Do these companies also do color blindness tests for people joining at managerial posts? Kindly reply to my query as this will be of great help for my future studis..i am interested in finance and will color blindness will be a hinderenc for me?? a reply from an HR will be appreciated..

Your experiences might vary from firm to firm but the point that the HR department is an important representative of the company has been made. In fact HR is the sole department taking care of a company's internal marketing. You will be happy or unhappy with your firm depending upon the extent to which the people from this department have understood the HR policies of your firm and employed them for your benefit.
The idea of viewing HR as an independent corporate activity deserving credit is a pretty recent one in India. There are many reasons why HR might have been relegated to the shadows of its more dashing cousins like marketing, finance and operations. A few prominent ones being -
  1. The wretched salaries being offered till very recently to HR professionals. (This is changing.)
  2. Lack of corporate backing to educational institutions, which are churning out HR professionals.
  3. The general perception of students about HR being a "common sense" discipline not worth specializing in.
  4. Lack of apparent "Power" and "Glamour" associated with an HR profile.

Folks, thank you for making this such a useful thread through your contributions. In order to supplement the efforts here, a few other PGites (cymba, diva12 and our own Utsav) have created a site to cater to HR topics in a much more organised way.

Please do visit eleventHR and express your views.

P.S. It's a personal site, meant to help out aspirants and industry professionals and so I'm assuming this post does not count as advertising. (We don't even have google ads, so there's not a single paisa we're earning from it. )

Regarding good colleges in HR, GIM ranks very close to the top 5 HR colleges. Apart form the excellent HR faculty, coupled wit good placements in HR it has a long list of Alumini occupying top HR positions in the industry.
Sreekumar,Director-HR of Yahoo India is one of the HR alumini of GIM
