i fail to understand why MBA?

if its for a job then i already have one (32 K p.m.) to be precise
if its for promotions/rise, i will get a team lead position in 1-2 yrs in my comp.
if for foreign positions then that is highly probable in my company....

if these are not the usual reasons then why?

also i dont understand what am mba will do in a hardcore sw comp like ours that works on embedded systems and computer networks [/highlight:53de7616a6]

Does it mean that after an MBA u'll continue in the same company?
Most networking companies.. do require technical people.. but does that mean that they do not market their products..? (marketing comes into play.)
Doesn't top business firms.. follow a development life cycle..( in lines with the waterfall model..) , don't they require analysis n planning..?( which techie ppl.. don't usually do..)[/highlight:53de7616a6]
in fact i dont see myself selling these chips and sw that we make to our clients marketing just reminds me of a salesman

MBA's not only about marketing.. consider systems, fin, manufacturing..[/highlight:53de7616a6]
okey so its for the money, big bonuses, private jets, etc?

i asked one of my cousins who did 5 yrs exp in siemens before his MBA for INSEAD France ( world no. 2 MBA) and he says its foolish to do an mba right after graduation...moreover foreign instis. dont even give u admission for < than 4-5 yrs. exp.

but then again i think why MBA? i have seen many techies make it big (VPs, CEos) without an MBA.....

man enlighten me ...i hope some senior guys of this grp can give a good insight to it...
And if u r really at a dilemma.. why go for an MBA.. see u've got enough points to say to urself.. "why an MBA?"..
U can surely do without an MBA too.... I've seen many guys making BIG without an MBA.. but doing an MBA will allow u to get a better hold of the business perspective..

If u r looking for more challenging options.. like opening up a firm of ur own.. consultancy.. then MBA's the way..

cheers,,

Anupam.

primarily, as i see it , a techie would want to do a mba for either of these reasons :

1. a career shift into a different domain ( say, to banking or media or retail )

2. career shift to a different function in the same domain ( say, engineering to tech marketing )

3. get a launchpad to start something off on his own

as i see it, these are valid reasons to go get ur mba. the other more usual reasons why techies for a mba - eg. try and figure out what to do with their lives in 2 yrs of back_to_college, or doing it cuz they want a PG degree, or doing it because they are stagnating, are, unfortunately the more common reasons. i think these are a bit escapist, if i may put it that way, and u shud seriously reconsider doing a mba if ur reasons fall in these classes.

You have to set your priorities and career plan first, only then someone can suggest here something about the pros-cons of the same.

Re: Software guy in dilemma - 23-10-2008, 10:30 AM

Again one more software guy is in dilemma
I am currently in IT industry and I have work exp of 2 years.

If I do MBA, then my IT work exp will be considered or not, as software engineers are considered as techies and NOT managers?

Is there any course related to IT if I appear for CET? I have heard about SYSTEM course. Does any one about this? Is there any one who has done MBA/MMS in system?

How can I be associated with IT industry after completing MBA/MMS?
