It is useful to look at it on a different perspective. Why one would like to go for a distance MBA course at all? There are various options available today like Regular MBA (2/3 years fir fresh passout), Executive MBA (5+ years experience for 10 months to 22 months duration), Par Time MBA (short term on campus for 1 year to 2 years duration), and now Online MBA (Slowly gaining acceptance).

It depends on the compulsions and the requirement of a perticular candidate to see what MBA would be appropriate for him/her. MBA thru DL is the toughest among all of them followed by Online MBA because of two reasons:

1- Generally done by a person who has compulsions of continueing with job etc.
2- Virtually No class room or guidance from any one (loss of interest slowly)

Contrary to the perceptions, MBA (DL) is given its due credit in job selection or elevation if the interviewer appreciates the reasons for doing so (obvious) besides getting a good entry in resume.

DL MBA is suggested only if you are not able to take the other (not online) MBA admissions due to genuine reasons. Among the Business schools in India IGNOU, ICFAI & Symbiosis are very popular and in my opinion all of them are in the same league. I personally see IGNOU MBA in a higher esteem (for the study materials, assignments, examination pattern, project work).

All the very best for the MBA aspirants.

Thanks a lot for ur clarification..

Being a working professional, i have a dilemma in choosing between DL & Part time. Which one is having higher market value? what are the benefits of Parttime over DL, and what are the problems i can face in Part time which i wont have to face in DL?

I suppose your querry is directed to me....

Working professionals are often seen enrolling for executive MBA offered by ISB,IIMs and other top Management schools. It is expensive (10 to 20 lacs) and needs full time. However if you are exploring only between DL and Part time MBA as options, it largely depends on your own situation viz. Job Type, reason for going for an MBA degree and the financials.

Part time MBA degree, if taken from IIMs (now offered by IIM-Indore, IIM-Kozhicode etc.) has certainly far more value than even regular MBA degree from second or third tier schools.

MBA being an orientation course with practical value addition, group exercises, Industry interface, workshops are really more acceptable which comes from regular or Part time (from above institutions) MBA courses and certainly not available in DL-MBA.

However MBA courses offered (perceived as DL-MBA) from many institutions like IGNOU are not exactly distance learning since there are regular class room sessions and opportunity to interact with other students. Here I agree with himsoccer11 on ICFAI thought as it is professionally managed (I do not have much idea), and I feel IGNOU lacks student interaction part.

Part Time MBA offered by good institutions need you to spend 3 to 6 weeks at campus in periodic intervals for practical sessions and the course fee is between 1.5 lacs to 6 lacs for the entire course. However the DL-MBA does not require you to attend classrooms (inexpensive too) but submit the assignments and appear the examinations as scheduled. Students often neglect DL-MBA completion intime because of a half hearted approach to it and that is the reason drop out percentage is far more than other MBA courses.

It is always better to take informed decisions after evaluating pros & cons. Once we take a decision, we must go ahead firmly coz we know why we did so.

We have to accept the fact that MBA programs in all formats - full-time, part-time, correspondence - have a market. And all of these have grown over time. Which is why a single format hasn't completely washed out the relevance of the others.

A full-time MBA obviously requires more resources (time, money, effort) and also gives back more (career options, network, the 'MBA experience'). However everyone is not in a position to take 1-2 years off their careers due to personal constraints.

In such cases, a part-time MBA might be an option to consider. You'd need to be aware that the additional benefits that you'd have to forego, such as a fully-immersed completely focussed experience. You may still be using the same text books and case studies, though. So if you choose a good part-time school, you may still be able to match the full-timers as far as theory and conceptual knowledge goes.

A correspondence MBA would be good if you are looking for a knowledge upgrade. If you are planning to move across functions within your current company and your management supports your educational initiatives (not just monetorily, but also in defining a career-plan for you after your completion), then it could be a good option to evaluate.

Consider your end objective before jumping into any one of these formats.
