Re: advice???? please - 06-03-2008, 12:38 PM

its a very personal choice...
also, u hv to always justify for any gaps during education or job during the PIs...
also, work-ex is always good to hv b4 getting in2 mngmnt. instts.
my advice is... appear for CAT this yr., analyse ur weakpoints if u don't get thru n then decide whether u'll b
actually able to study n prepare while u work or u need to sit at home for that... n in worst case, if smthng favourable doesn't come up then also, then wht will b ur work around...
hope this helps..

Go through this thread

http://www.pagalguy.com/forum/cat-an...-cat-07-a.html (Dropping a year for cat 07)

Everybody who takes cat except the ones who do it as a formality thinks he/she is good and can crack CAT . But not everybody does it . At first you are all excited , decide you wont do anything this whole year except study for CAT and bell it .You then get to know about your abilities in the mocks . Even after that CAT is a different story , because the competition you face in the real CAT is much more than the mocks and factors like keeping your cool , pattern etc play a part . I am not taking anything away from you but the most important part of any plan is the backup . Infact many find solace in the fact that they atleast have a job in their hands if not an IIM seat and that their experience is accumulating which is good . A job gives you money , exposure and even a different perpective of what you want to do in life. Most importantly , you dont need 24 * 365 hours to crack CAT . 6 months of sincere effort of a few hours everyday is very much enough .

Don't follow some hysterical fellows and stop going out with friends , boozing and breaking up with GFs all in the name of CAT .

Best of luck

Re: advice???? please - 10-03-2008, 05:55 PM

hi to all,
plz help me out.. i passed out this september only..i did my graduation in radiology from pgimer,chandigarh.....i attempted cat07 but ended up with very little prep after september, for 2 months, with 65 prcntl only...now i am confused wheather i should go for a job and study side by side....
or
drop a year and prepare fully for cat08 with coachings(like to mention here that i am doing NCFM side by side)....
or
do some 1 year diploma course(about which i read in the thread
http://www.pagalguy.com/forum/cat-an...stified-7.html (is dropping for cat justified))and prepare with coachings also side by side....
any one can tell about such course available?????

Re: advice???? please - 10-03-2008, 06:07 PM

hi all...

i understand that it is a matter of great confusion to decide about future yourself...as i faced it mayself 2 yrs ago..
my advice rather suggestion:
prepare for campus...it is more certain that you will be placed rather than getting a 99%ile in cat..
after placements, which generally gets over in 3rd year.prepare for cat..actually preparing for campus includes alot of things which are comman to cat(i felt that way)..refer ARUN SHARMA FOR QUANTS..THATS IT...dont go by m.tyra etc...

then give mocs by ims & /or time..it is the most essential thing to analyze where u stand after the mocks and prepare accordingly..

so when the results are out, apply some colleges as pr ur result..if u convert..well n gud..else go for ur job..try again!!!

i got 97.09 & 98.09 %ile in cat 06 n 07... first while in college ,then working in wipro!!!
so u see...if u want it you get that...but you must be motivated urself!!no one else can help..
for any discussion feel free to reply or pm me..!!
ALL THE BEST!!! "V"...

hey rohit_crv,

I would say you take up a job . honestly it doesn't require 365 days for cat prep. further more it would be very hard to keep up the intensity and hunger 365 days long!. a good job definitely helps u mature as a person it was an eye-opener for me. Dont think of how u would be able to balance the work along with ur studies at some point of time u wud have to do much more than that. Those who are able to do it are the ones who end up in good b-schools. Coaching class only gives u an idea of whats going on nothing more rest is all upto u. Everything mentioned above is my personal opinion and from my own experinces. hope it helps!

thanx for this....
but i would like to mention here that my degree is a professional one..my degree was actually an in-service training program...in pgimer,chandigarh..postings in opds,emergencies...i have faced the professional pressure environment, worked independently during postings....so maturing as a person,it has been done in past 3 years of my graduation...a tough degree i wud say..
but i know it would be considered as a degree only and not as work ex!!!!! i am confused regarding going for a full time job,wud say a bit sceptical about my studies with job situation..i need to work on my maths skills a lot i know...which will demand time...

whats ur opinion on that????

Hi Innovative and Rohit,

I would like to state a couple of things regarding your questions; first of all there are people who cracked CAT after preparing 24/7, and there are people who did it while working full time.

So there is no absolute right or wrong in this matter. But, in my personal opinion, I would always say join your work and then prepare half-time. I am saying this from my personal experience.

I have a full time job, have to take care of my household chores (I am married) AND I have to do my studies side by side. And trust me, I have time. And no, I am not the most brilliant person in the planet either. It is just a matter of managing your time, deciding which stuff you have to do personally, and delegating the rest to make time for your priorities.

As you are a recent graduate, I assume you don't yet have family responsibilities on your shoulder, hence CAT prep would be comparitively easier for you, even when you do it along with your work. Mind you, I said "comparitively easier," I am not saying that it is going to be easy.

Once you have made up your mind, you can always find time to do anything you want. So if you are positive that MBA is the way to go and you are ready to take pains for that, there is no harm in taking up a job and studying part time. It has worked for a lot of people, there is no reason why it shouldn't work for you.

But then again, if you feel sure in the bottom of your heart that you are ready to take an year long sabbatical from work and immerse yourself exclusively in your studies and then emerge with flying colours, go ahead by all means. If you do your research, talk to people who have done it by studying full time and those who did it while working full time, you will get a clear understanding about the benefits and the risks involved in both cases. Then it is up to you to make a final decision, by honestly examining your own abilities and mindset. All that we can do is share our experiences, rest is up to you to decide.

Hope this helps... ATB..

Regards,
Gayathri.
